**Q: Design help for living room** *(in Home Decorating)*

Would love design expertise for this large living room! All furniture is old and we are open to replacement. This room is so big I have a hard time envisioning what to do with it, especially the blank wall behind the couch.
Measurements:
Wall with windows is 20ft, back wall (behind couch) is 15 ft and front wall with fireplace is 18 feet. Any ideas are appreciated!

When I bought the house 13 years ago it had just been painted green. So I have lived with it for 13 years and it is starting to fade. I thought I would take this opportunity to update it a bit. A lot of people in my neighborhood are just painting the stone white and it looks bad. How can I work with the stone? Hardi Board? What color? Style?

A: From what you’ve shared, the best “modern update” here isn’t forcing a full modern style, it’s modernizing the Mediterranean/ranch character you already have and cleaning up the visual weight. Keep the stone (it’s a strong feature), but refresh the overall palette by shifting away from the green into a warmer neutral body color with deeper contrasting trim/fascia so the stone and roof feel intentional and updated. 

The biggest improvement will come from landscaping + approach: simplify shrubs, remove overgrowth, add structured planting beds, and upgrade the path so the entry feels clean and designed. Also, replacing dated garage doors with a modern wood-look or carriage-style door plus updated exterior lighting and house numbers will instantly bring the home forward without ruining the stone. (Most people regret painting stone white because it looks flat and artificial.)

**Q: Family room furniture layout help!** *(in Furniture)*

I’m totally stumped.  We have a good size family room but it has  million paths of
travel.  We have the TV over the fireplace and I’m struggling with how to set up an attractive
room that people can actually hangout in!

A: With a room that has multiple traffic paths, the best approach is to treat the furniture layout like a “floating island” seating zone instead of pushing everything to walls. Your fireplace/TV is still the focal point, but it doesn’t mean the furniture must be perfectly symmetrical to the whole room, it just needs to feel intentional within the seating zone. One strong solution is to center the rug + main seating group around the fireplace, and then use a sofa table/console behind the sofa (or behind a loveseat) to visually separate the family space from the kitchen path. That console also becomes functional “landing space” for lighting, drinks, or decor, and helps the seating zone feel anchored rather than drifting in a large open plan. 

Since your fireplace is off-center and you’re trying to keep the French door pathway usable, you don’t need to fight for perfect centering, instead, aim for clear circulation lanes (at least comfortable walking width) and define the conversation/TV zone with the rug and furniture angles. A few easy wins based on what commenters often spot in these rooms: reduce visual clutter, avoid awkward console placement behind smaller seating (if it blocks flow), and use a substantial lamp on the round side table to warm the space. Also, mounting the TV slightly lower and simplifying the mantle visual line can make the focal wall feel calmer, and once the focal wall is visually balanced, the whole room layout tends to “click” better.

**Q: addition/remodel interior layout** *(in Remodeling)*

We are getting started on our remodel/addition plans for a house we recently purchased.
Anyone interested in giving an opinion on this entryway into the kitchen? It is technically the front door but will be seldomly used as we actually park out by the garage and family room entryway. I can't visualize what a closet will look like right there and what doors to use ect 🧐 Im imagining we will use it more for kitchen stuff rather than coats but idk

A: If that door is technically the “front door” but you won’t use it daily, then it’s worth thinking about whether that entry should function like a formal arrival space or more like a secondary/utility entry. A closet right there can feel odd if the door rarely gets used for coats, but it can still be valuable as a “kitchen-adjacent drop zone”, think pantry overflow, broom/utility storage, or even a concealed cabinet wall that looks built-in rather than a traditional coat closet. 

The real question is how you want guests to arrive: if guests will mostly enter through the family-room/garage side, then this door can be designed to be simple and efficient rather than “grand.” That said, one of the best pieces of advice in remodel planning is: live in the house long enough to learn how it wants to work,  because layouts that ignore your actual entry habits often feel wrong even if they look good on paper. If guests come through the kitchen-side entry, you may still want a small spot for coats or bags, but it doesn’t have to be a deep closet, a shallow built-in with hooks/bench, or cabinetry that matches the kitchen can solve it more elegantly.

**Q: Kitchen remodel layout problems** *(in Design Dilemma)*

Hi all.  We recently moved into a home from the 90s.  Most of the house has been beautifully updated, but the kitchen lauout is bad.  We budgeted a major kitchen remodle when we bought the house and are ready to start the design process.  Id love to get ideas as to a better kitchen design. 

we have 6 kids and like to host family events (45 for christmas dinner).  we would like a large island, wide isles for multiple cooks, 60” double oven, large fridge/freezer, and a large window vs multiple windows on the 17’8” wall to maximize the view.  the living room ceilings are vaulted to the second floor and the kitchen/family ceilings are 9 ft.


the above picture is the current layout with a triangular kitchen with a window cutout over the sink to look into the family room and there is a breakfast nook.  

the second picture shows an idea to remove the diagonal wall and open up the wall to the living room.  the old family room then becomes a bigger kitchen and there is room for a dining table.  id put windows on either side of the stove and the sink by the large window.  the fridge would be on the opposite wall as the sink and the large barrier island would separate them.

A: With a large family and frequent hosting, your biggest wins will come from proper clearances, realistic appliance planning, and workflow design, not just scaling everything up. A 60" range sounds impressive, but it demands heavy-duty ventilation and makeup air, so it can become a major cost driver without necessarily improving function, especially if wall ovens already handle volume cooking. 

Focus on wider aisles (true counter-to-counter clearance), an island sized for prep and landing space, and smart zones: prep near sink, cooking near range, and cleanup near dishwashers. Also, plan seating carefully, people are generally more comfortable at a dining table than a row of stools, so you may not need as much island seating as you think. Because structural changes and load requirements can impact feasibility, this is one of those layouts where bringing in a qualified kitchen designer + structural engineer early will prevent expensive revisions later.
