Paul Davis Architects (PDA) is a full-service, Los Angeles-based design firm that believes ambitious architecture can have a profound effect on people's happiness, productivity, and enjoyment of everyday living.

We believe this can be accomplished with special attention to beauty in building, “fit” (the rightness of a designed thing in its role and place), and an economy that celebrates intelligent choice-making. We are advocates for sustainable design in our projects not only with strategic use of "green" materials and technologies but with careful study of best principles in building location and configuration. We embrace the notion that “Small Can Be Beautiful” (after economist E.F. Schumacher). Although we are well-versed in the use of exquisite materials and highest-quality construction, we do not believe that a project needs to be expensive to be good. Rather, we understand that clear thinking, skill and a keen understanding of the needs of our clients can enable us to create unique places at reasonable cost.

The firm and its personnel are experienced in a broad range of residential and commercial project types, including new modern single-family homes, historic renovations, multi-family building interior and shell work, retail stores, restaurants, and corporate facilities with institutional or cultural components.

> I have greatly enjoyed working with Paul and his team at Paul Davis Architects. Being a contractor for 20 years, I admire the attention to detail that Paul provides, not only has an architect, but as a Project Manager and liaison to the client's visions. Since completing our first project together in 2016, I have had the opportunity to work side-by-side with him on various other projects around the city of Venice, CA. PDA always designs with intentions of creating unique spaces with practical functionality. He and his team at PDA are easy to collaborate with and responsive to any and all communication. His expansive knowledge of design and build is showcased in his detailed drawings, outlines of project schedules, and in his vernacular to clients, making the process of remodeling and renovations smooth and easy to accomplish for all parties involved. As a contractor, I appreciate and recommend Paul Davis Architects for any upcoming project.

**Comment from Paul Davis Architects:**

> Paul, working with you and your team is always a pleasure, and we are proud of the results we achieve together. Thanks for your comments - we look forward to more further successful collaborations in the future!

> We couldn't have been happier with the work Paul and his team did on our remodel! His work literally transformed our home. We think it looks beautiful and everyone that comes to our home says the same. Our complaint with our 1952 home prior to the remodel was that the layout was awkward and it lacked a nice flow. In interviewing architects, they all recommended an addition, although a larger home was not necessarily our wish. Paul was the only one who did not recommend an addition but instead suggested a more intelligent use of space. This not only adhered to our wishes, but saved us costs associated with adding on and changing the roof line. His talent and extensive experience was apparent with his suggestions for home layout and design each step of the way. One of the things we appreciated most was how he simplified our choices by providing us with his top three picks for materials like tile, flooring, etc., thus saving us a lot of time and frustration. The only challenge was choosing the best out of three great options! And it was certainly a pleasure working with someone as professional, positive, calm, and competent as Paul. Additionally, he is just an all around nice guy with a great wit and sense of humor and is a pleasure to be around. You can't go wrong with PDA!

**Comment from Paul Davis Architects:**

> Dear Claudia - thank you for your very kind note. We do feel that our collaboration at your home yielded really wonderful results, and we are proud of what we accomplished together. It is particularly gratifying when a strategic "re-shuffling" of space can have such a powerful effect, without additional floor area being required.
> You guys are optimal clients (now friends) and we thoroughly enjoyed the whole process. Thank you again.
> All my best,

> I have had the pleasure of working with Paul Davis and his wonderful team at PDA for over fifteen years. As a seasoned Interior Designer, I enjoy collaborating with architects. In assembling a design team I look for a combination of design skill, technical ability (how to get things built right), and the desire to satisfy clients fully. Paul always comes to mind when I need an architect. Together we have collaborated on six homes including new construction, additions and remodels. Paul has great taste, and a sophisticated sensitivity to design and details that brings out the best of the space - making it not just a house, but a home. He knows that building more or spending more doesn't necessarily create the best results. Our best projects are often special because they feel "just right" in their places and in the owner's lives, not because they are flashy or overly fancy. I would not hesitate to recommend Paul as he has proven time and time again that he strives successfully to help our clients to bring their dreams to life. He has created many happy homes in the process.

> We have had the pleasure of working with Paul Davis Architects over the course of 3 separate projects on our one house. We loved our Cliff May and wanted to update and restore our home while still remaining in residence on the property with our 2 children. PDA made this possible, and made it comfortable and safe. The entire team at PDA carefully considered our needs, desires and ultimate vision for the home, and the finished product is a space that is warm, inviting and ideal for family living and entertaining. The public spaces are light-filled, and open, yet not cavernous. The private spaces of the home are scaled perfectly and have a warmth while providing plenty of space. We have entertained often, gatherings from 10 people up to 100 and guests repeatedly remark on the beauty and comfort of the space, and we can attest to the ease of entertaining in our home.
> Maintaining the look, feel and integrity of our Cliff May "California Ranch" home and utilizing sustainable and eco-friendly options during construction were both important to us. Our collaboration with PDA exceeded our expectations. The care and attention to everything from small, fine details to overall floor plan was essential in creating a stunning and balanced finished product. Our home looks and feels very much like a Cliff May, just a bit more modern and functional. PDA was also actively interested in incorporating eco-friendly features into our home, from solar water heaters, to denim insulation, and a myriad of recycled/green products, PDA seamlessly integrated them into our home. Furthermore, PDA was key in managing the overall project. From knowledgeably and skillfully overseeing the construction and building process, to painstakingly reviewing the contractor billings and change orders we always felt that PDA was looking out for our best interests. Working with Paul and his team over these three remodels we became and have stayed friends. This collaboration was enjoyable and enlightening and the finished product is adored by our family and everyone who sets foot in our home.

> Paul Davis and his team designed our new free-standing master bedroom suite. They helped us by securing the permits, and administered construction with our general contractor.
>
> This home addition takes the form of a full new 4-sided building, connected to the main house by a slender passage. The addition is bright and roomy, but no bigger than it needs to be. Its location was coordinated perfectly with a wonderful old tree in our back yard. A new paved courtyard (with charming wall fountain), master deck and carport were also included in the work.
>
> We are particularly happy that the addition feels like an original part of our house - PDA's sensitivity to context was excellent.
>
> Overall, the project came in on-budget and was a complete success. PDA's design work and effort in bringing the project through to completion were exemplary. We are delighted with the results and could not imagine being more pleased with the overall process. Sincere thanks to Paul and his crew!

**Comment from Paul Davis Architects:**

> We worked with Paul and his team on an expansion and complete renovation of our home. Taking on the roles of architect, project manager, and designer, Paul was involved in every step of the process, from drafting plans and seeking permits to choosing finishes and other interior design details. I cannot say enough about Paul's professionalism, talent, and demeanor. Projects as large as ours inevitably hit snags, and Paul's consistently positive attitude and creative approach to his work got us through those rough patches.
>
> We are extremely happy with the final result. The house is filled with light and perfectly designed for our needs as a family. The design is modern yet warm, and his plans took full advantage of the existing space. We recommend PDA absolutely!

**Comment from Paul Davis Architects:**

> Thank you so much, vrbenitez! We really enjoyed working with you guys tremendously, and it makes us very happy that you appreciate your home so much. So gratifying!
> All our best to you and the family.

> We worked with Paul Davis Architects to complete a remodel of our home. We redid the main floor layout, the kitchen, reworked the fireplace and surrounding mantle, created an office guest room combination, and updated design elements in the remainder of the home. The team created an amazing design and the oversaw the project all the way through completion. They also recommended contractors and helped us to establish a relationship with the general contractor that we hired for the job. We did not use an interior designer so their team helped us select furnishings that were in-line with the overall design. We highly recommend Paul Davis Architects.

**Comment from Paul Davis Architects:**

> Thank you very kindly for the feedback, Ashley! It has always been a delight to work with you guys, and we are excited at our continued collaboration. Onward! :)

> I have been working with Paul and his team for over 10 years. Paul Davis Architects (PDA) understands the importance of working together in the common goal of completing a great project. Paul's attention to detail and professionalism make him easy to work with and provide us as the contractors the means to efficiently produce his vision. His design aesthetic is always fresh yet elegant. I have given a number of clients tours through the projects we have worked on with PDA. Their assessments, collectively are, "Wow! This is beautiful! I want something like this!"

**Comment from Paul Davis Architects:**

> Epic Construction is a great partner to PDA in helping us create beautiful projects that are also well-crafted and durable. We greatly value their ability to realize our visions so effectively for our mutual clients. Thank you for the great feedback, guys.

> Paul designed a house for me and my family, a 3,500 square foot cutting edge modernist design in Newport Beach, California.
>
> We are extremely happy with the design. Modern houses tend not to be very livable. They're set pieces for people with multiple addresses. This is a family home where we raised our children. The rooms are full of light and nicely proportioned to foster human interaction. Broad sliding glass doors open on to gardens and terraces. In summer we throw them open and live partly outdoors. Nevertheless, it's rigorous modern building and no shortcuts were taken in the design.
>
> Modern houses are notoriously difficult to build. But the plans were so exceptionally detailed, and Paul's job supervision was so good that there was very little difficulty in construction (we also had a suburb contractor) change orders were very rare. The project came in on time and only slightly over budget, which was mostly due to site prep conditions that couldn't have been predicted.
>
> The experience was so good that I'd like nothing better than to build another someday.

**★★★★★ — glennrosten, March 2013**

> Paul Davis architects literally created a design for my condo that has truly become my dream house. Not only is my home a piece of art, but the functionality is completely in sync with my lifestyle.
> As anticipated, there were surprises and problems in construction, but Davis and his associates worked closely and diligently with McCraw, the contractor during the entire process, in making adjustments such that the project became a relative piece of cake.
> Friends coming over almost universaly mention the obvious "detail" in the design and unique functionality of my home.
> I am more than pleased with my selection with PDA and would truly give them an unqualified recomendation to someone who wants that "special home"

 - Location: Los Angeles, CA

 - Description: PDA has completed a complete renovation/addition at this distinctive 1970's canal-front house in Venice. New floor area enables a young family to feel comfortable, and the fresh, airy feeling created by ample sunlight and white walls is complemented by handsome accent materials and finishes in rich tones. The design theme was "70's Cuban Beach House", in a gesture to the owner's upbringing and the waterfront setting.

 - Description: Here PDA has carried out a full interior re-design of the upper floor (containing major living spaces and a guest bedroom/home office area) for a young married couple. The original house was a handsome but - aside from ocean views from that top floor - unremarkable contemporary spec house in Manhattan Beach. The newly-married pair were interested in a warm, integrated modern feeling for the adjoining living room, kitchen, and dining area. Existing fixtures, finishes, and cabinets were dated and…

 - Description: The residential area known as Sullivan Canyon in Los Angeles lies between Brentwood and the Pacific Palisades, and since the late 1930’s has been home to a particular sort of Southern California lifestyle – with an equestrian focus. Many of the homes in this area were designed by the inventor of the so-called “Western Ranch House,” Cliff May. The project you see here is a new home, incorporating stylistic elements (as well as a fireplace and master bedroom walls) from the property’s original Cli…

 - Description: This new single-family residence in Orange County was conceived as a home that would feature a range of near-seamless links between inside and out, encouraging the owners to enjoy the fresh air and warm sunshine. Indoor spaces are full of daylight, and the basic shape of the home creates a number of outdoor living "rooms", both at ground level and on second floor roof decks. The main volume of the house is a long one-story bar, open to sunny garden zones to the South. The roof above that piece i…

## Community Q&A

**Q: how tall is the wall for the shower enclosure?** *(in Photo Questions)*

.

A: Hi Mary! Thanks for your question. This wall is around 54" tall, but I can get you an exact figure if it will be useful. It is somewhat lower than is customary for showers, which helps the space of the room flow better - it looks more roomy overall. Sorry about the delay - we have just discovered a cache of unanswered questions deep in our profile site. I am going to work through them all as quickly as possible.
Good luck with your project, and don't hesitate to write me at "davis@pauldavisarchitects.com" if the precise height is good for you to know.
Thanks again!
Paul
PDA

**Q: Could you tell me what color brick was used for the fireplace?** *(in Photo Questions)*

A: Hello, aalaperr - That is pretty much a "standard gray" concrete block, and I believe it was supplied by Angeles Block here in southern California. You should not have much trouble getting CMU (concrete masonry units) in that color from a range of suppliers. We sealed it with a surface-applied product that deepened the color very slightly, but otherwise it's a very ordinary product (4 X 16", btw - not a standard size but we like the proportion).
Thanks for your question.
Best,
Paul
PDA

**Q: Great space! Are the cabinets in line with or set back from fireplace?** *(in Photo Questions)*

A: Hi mydreamhome! Thanks for your good question - I believe you are referring to the cabinets immediately adjoining the fireplace to its left, yes? Those are definitely set back by a few inches. That gives the cabinet the ability to "die into" the side of the fireplace, which is a nice clean way to stop that run.
We like to be conscious of hierarchy in the various elements we are using, meaning that more important things get emphasized - in this case, that's the fireplace, and setting the cabinets back helps tell that story.
Good luck with your projects.
Thanks again,
Paul
PDA

**Q: What is the wall and ceiling paint color?** *(in Photo Questions)*

Hi. What is the wall and ceiling paint color?

A: Hi Denisse! Thanks for your question. We used Benjamin Moore's "Decorator's White" on the ceiling, and I'm pretty sure it was "Atrium White" on the walls. The first is a bluish-gray white that has the quality of making ceilings seem high and open (we think), and the Atrium white is a warm subtly-pinkish white that just seems to us to be a happy, sunny color! Good luck with your project!
Best,
Paul

**Q: Please tell me the brand of the vessel sinks** *(in Photo Questions)*

A: Hi ggendres - yes, those are nice! The vessel sinks you see here are "Amalfi 55" by Victoria and Albert ( https://vandabaths.com/en/europe/product/amalfi-55/ ). We coordinated them with a free-standing tub by the same manufacturer - the material and shapes are quite good together.
Please let us know if you have any other questions.
Thank you and good luck with your project.
Best,
Paul

**Q: Firewood nook dimensions** *(in Photo Questions)*

Could you please share the dimensions of the opening firewood storage opening, including depth? Thank you!

A: Hello, kmschaefer628 - thank you for your question. We are getting back to active monitoring of the Houzz account after a bit of a hiatus, and I apologize for taking so long to get back to you. As to the firewood niche, we coordinated its height and width with the concrete block module - and those blocks are 4" high X 16" long. This means that the niche is 16" wide and 40" tall (ie one block wide and 10 tall). Its depth is approximately 2'-8" (32"). That is deeper than you would tend to need for normal-sized logs, but it resulted from the basic structure of the chimney. I think you could do well with a depth of 24" or even somewhat less.
I hope this helps - let me know if you have additional questions.
Best of luck with your project.
Yours,
Paul
