This company was started in 1999 years ago as a handyman service. Over the years our clients have recognized and appreciated our professional results and promptness which resulted in much repeat and referral business. Now we focus on full scale kitchen and bathroom remodeling projects PLUS room additions, basement build-outs, along with many other home improvements. 
Over the years, the owner, Bob Gallese, has assembled a team of professional tradesmen whom are all employees of Acclaim Renovations & Design. Why are they employed tradesmen instead of sub-contractors? Simple, to control quality and timeliness. Although sub-contractors are called in for some larger tasks such as electrical panel changes, major plumbing, etc. most of our installs are handled in house. The subs we use have a long history with us and we know that they offer the quality we require.

> We had a master bathroom with a walk-in closet done by Acclaim Renovation, then known as One Man and a Hammer, December 2014-February 2015. We chose One Man and a Hammer based on their years in business, reviews we read online, and the fact that they offered design services.

> We were very pleased with the design phase. Mark and Bob were extremely pleasant to work with. We appreciated their passion for their work, and both of them had very helpful ideas and input on how to use the space. We picked out the cabinetry and tile at the One Man and a Hammer showroom, where there was a nice selection to choose from.
>
> Our problems started the first week work began at our home in early December. We came home on Monday, the first day, to find the screen door from the garage into the house locked. This door can only be locked from the inside – it is impossible to lock it, close the door, and have it remain locked. The door from the garage into the house was not the one they had a key to so we are not sure why the workers were using it.
>
> Wednesday morning when we took a shower in the main bathroom we found that the master shower drain, which was connected to the main bathtub’s drain, had not been capped. Water was coming out of the kitchen ceiling below the master bathroom. The workers capped the drain and did repair the damage to the kitchen ceiling.
>
> Thursday afternoon we came home to find the front door standing open and the key box used to store the front door key had also been left open. The workers had left for the day.
>
> We called One Man and a Hammer and they assured us that leaving the house open would not happen again. Monday of the second week we found that the master bathroom window had been left open. Again the workers had left for the day.

> Fortunately the serious issues stopped, but as the project progressed we had other issues. We found damage to the front door casing and several dings in the drywall in the front entry. We indicated prior to the work beginning that we had just finished painting the front entry, stairway, and second floor hallway and would like care to be taken as the work progressed. We had 4 doors and 13 windows replaced, air conditioning, and hardwood installed in 3 rooms prior to this project. We did not have any of this kind of damage as a result of any of those projects.

> We had some issues with the quality of the work that was performed. We had One Man and a Hammer correct some of the issues, other we chose not to have corrected. We consider these to be a difference of opinion. We discussed with the owner Bob during the final walk-through we think greater attention to detail would have produced much better results.
>
> We discovered our most significant issue this year. Because of our experience with One Man and a Hammer we chose another company to remodel our kitchen. During this project we found that one of the floor joists was cut through to make room for the shower drain. 3 ½ inches of the joist was completely removed from a joist, from the floor above it to the kitchen ceiling drywall below it. The drain pipe was in the middle of the gap in the joist.
>
> Unfortunately we approached One Man and a Hammer with anger, which was inappropriate and uncalled for. We regret our reaction and we apologized for our behavior. One Man and a Hammer did offer to repair the damage. We chose to have our new contractor perform the repair as we believe the solution One Man and a Hammer proposed was not sufficient. We also did not have confidence in One Man and a Hammer’s ability to perform the repair properly because structural damage was done to our home when they worked on it 3 years ago. One Man and a Hammer did offer to pay for ¼ of the cost of the repair, which we accepted. We had to email One Man and a Hammer twice before they sent us a check 5 weeks after we requested it.
>
> We have seen the many excellent reviews for One Man and a Hammer. We have also noticed that One Man and a Hammer at times asks for suggestions on what they can do better. In the spirit of helping One Man and a Hammer improve, we offer the following suggestions:
>
> 1.Supervise work that is being done. As stated above this is something we discussed at the final walkthrough.
> 2.Perform all work according to building code.  Ohio code, section 502.8, concerning floor joists can be found here - http://codes.ohio.gov/oac/4101:8-5-01v1.
> 3.Respect your clients and their property. This will prevent both the issues we experienced in the first 2 weeks of our project and the more serious issue of damaging your client’s property.
>
> We wish One Man and a Hammer well, and we are sorry to say that we cannot give them a better review. We very much would have liked to have been able to do so.

> I always try to take the high road but you make it really tough. You have been nothing except for conniving. You paid me in full when the job was complete. You loved how the bathroom and closet were done and the finishes applied. You had zero complaints and now you want to post comments that simply are not true? One of these days I will figure out what we have done to you which, frankly, I know we have done nothing but be a great contractor to you.
> You are the one that authorized us to cut the joist because you wanted the drain dead center of the shower floor. You were adamant even though I expressed to you in not uncertain terms that it should not be done. Your comment of, "Do what I ask or leave" is what followed my vote against cutting into the joist. The pictures you post do not show the reinforcements we installed which have worked well for the last eight years.
> So, we cave to your demand, reinforce the cut joist, and now you post these out-and-out lies?? You take the word "unscrupulous" to an entirely new level, in a very inferior way.
> I now believe, 100%, all of the comments I heard from other contractors working in your home. Your poor treatment of everyone is a testament to your obvious narcissism.
> To any contractor reading this, please heed this advice, do not work for Phil Carl or TOni Franklin, his wife or girlfriend - I'm not sure. Interestingly enough, I have not heard from or seen Toni who has no problem voicing an opinion which tells me she has left the house or knows that Phil is acting like a fool.

> No job seems too small or too large for Acclaim!!!   A couple of years ago, we had looked around to find a local business to perform a major update on our vintage-1988 kitchen and were not at all satisfied until we found Bob Galese and Acclaim!  We could not have been happier with the entire staff from Bob to designer Mark to office staff including Debbie to on-site reno staff whose names escape me at the moment!  We wanted a complete refresh while not making the kitchen stand out so much that we (and everyone who saw it) would / could say: Wow, you really did a great job updating the kitchen but when are you going to do everything else?!.  So, what did Acclaim do?  They not only tore out the entire kitchen (i.e. cabinets, appliances flooring, etc.) but they also did so with care because they had informed us that we could donate cupboards and countertops to Habitat For Humanity versus simply having everything hauled to a dump!  They had sealed off the rest of the house to keep the dust, etc at a minimum.  Each day, they cleaned up the work area.  They tried to provide a minimum of disruption - if one can imagine that with a major kitchen reno.  The reno was completed within a few short days of the estimate AND there was only one outside dependency (for the quartz countertops) which Acclaim managed!  To this day, we are absolutely delighted with the kitchen!  And we tell everyone we know that we are.  What's more, everyone who has seen it has said: Wow!  Thanks, Bob and Acclaim!  FYI, we are planning to have Acclaim do a couple of other projects for us as soon as we have a window of time :)

> A couple of words to descibe Acclaim - Professional, thorough, clean and prompt. We hired Bob and his crew to remodel our kitchen last year.  Acclaim was very helpful with the design process especially since I was unsure exactly what I wanted.  The workmen were very knowledgable and thourough in their work but also worked as qickly as possible. The quality of the workmanship was excellent.   Removing the old soffits can be a messy but my house did not get destroyed in the process because everything was blocked off with heavy plastic and the work crew cleaned up with a shop vac everyday before leaving.  While not necessarily the lowest of original quotes, they did not nickel and dime us with change orders for every little thing and they went out of their way to make sure everthing was done right.  There was only one minor warranty type item which was repair very promptly.   I am very happy with my new kitchen and I know we hired the right company.

## Community Q&A

**Q: Kitchen remodel help** *(in Design Dilemma)*

Hi guys, I posted about this before and need some more advice and ideas. 

I have someone coming out next week to paint my kitchen cabinets and I can't decide if I want to go white (w/ antique glaze) or go dark(not black; expression brown maybe?)

I like both (maybe the white/antique a bit more) but I'm worried that painting them white will blend too much since they touch the ceiling, but am not convinced so, I'm turning to you guys for help:)

After the cabinets I'll be changing the counters, adding a backsplash, changing the lights and wall color.  Sooner than later I hope.

A: I would suggest the white with antique glaze. We did a job where the client had darker cabinet and chose to go with a antique white it opened the space and looks so pretty with flooring. Check out the pics.

**Q: Laundry room.** *(in Design Dilemma)*

Any ideas on covering this cord and vent? We have shelves that can be put in 25" from the right corner then that just leaves this in the middles :-/

A: You may be able to create custom shelving above and then decorative laundry baskets below to sort clothes then they would be removable if you need to access the vent.

A: I take it you meant width not breath.  Bathroom is approx 9'L x 8'8"W

A: Bathroom is approx. 5'W x 12'6"L

**Q: Shelf in shower** *(in Photo Questions)*

Where did you buy this shower shelf and does it
come in different colours ? Why did you choose
the shelf instead of the built in tile shelf.

A: We buy all our tile and accessories through Virginia Tile.  This is a corner shelf from Questech, it comes in two colors Travertine & Noche. The travertine color was used in this bathroom.  Corner shelves do not require as much labor as creating and tiling for a wall niche.  The customer chose to go with a corner shelf and apply the monies elsewhere in the project.

**Q: Shower Faucet/Handheld** *(in Photo Questions)*

Could you tell me the manufacturer & collection name for the shower faucet/handheld shown in this picture?  Thanks!

A: That is actually Moen's Eva Shower Fixture in Brushed Nickel along with the 4 Function Handheld.
