He has a fantastic eye and is very willing to work with a client in terms of what is already there. He has innovative but tasteful ideas— our projects with him have stood up well over time. **★ — Margo C., Aug. 2017** > If you have an unlimited budget with no interest in providing your own opinion or taste preferences, then Jeff is your man. Unfortunately, he is not well organized or technically capable of much. We had contracted him for a 4 month (200 hrs) new house design - and never saw a drawing or professional sketch. We are both working professionals and thought a designer would bring us options and do the shopping for us. None of this worked out with Jeff. After 4 months (and only 93 design hours) he sent us an email stating he would now charge us by the hour since the 4 months had passed. We were still waiting on furniture layouts, colors, and overall sketches - never got them. We had also paid him $14,000 in February for shutters - he insisted we pay before he could "order" them. That order wasn't placed until May. We asked for money back but he has refused to respond back to us. He basically held our money for 6 months. We also discovered that most of his "best pricing" included a 30% markup. We found better pricing when we looked for same product. We don't mind paying the markup if there was some work behind it - but Jeff just picks the most expensive thing he can find then puts his markup on it. We now have a new designer that is fabulous and understand how poor Jeff really was. Too bad. I’ve got a wall I could take advantage of that Gives me a full 5 feet. it would be like how barn doors are installed on standard roof openings. Has anyone seen any done like this? photo with black line to show potential install. Since this post still gets the occasional comment, I thought I'd post an update. We ended up with a swinging door. The local quote was $1400 but they tried to upcharge on that for a few things. We ended up using this door from Glass Warehouse (via Wayfair). I've since installed 2 other Glass Warehouse doors and have been really happy with the available sizes and ease of installation. Not the best photo, but one that shows the door. Bath Fixtures: Brizo Tile: Floor and Decor A: It's not obvious from your picture that you have a five foot span to slide a barn style door open. If the opening of the shower is around 3' wide before trim, you'll need the additional width of your door to slide away to. Also, with the toilet as close as it appears to be to the opening it looks like you don't have space for a door that swings open either. **Q: powerful led retrofit 6" & 4" square new construction.** *(in Electrical Wiring)* seeking suggestions for brands and lumens for our new construction house. kitchen will have 10 spot lights we want cool bright lighting very powerful. dining room and living room will all together will have another 10 but of warm lighting. i want somehting super powerful and modern looking yet in budget. any ideas images. posts and alll? thanks A: Sorry, no. Use your Google finger. **Q: Floating stairs and cable railing...** *(in Polls)* I am knocking down a half wall on the first landing on my staircase and I am replacing the old, ugly, wooden stair newels with cable railing. I don’t plan on moving in the near future so I am not concerned about it immediately but I would like to know the general consensus on floating stairs and cable railing. My house is pretty big with a huge fenced back yard is definitely a family home made for entertaining. My question is would a home with a floating staircase and cable railing be deal breaker when looking at a home? The stair stringers are going to be on the sides like normal stairs, not a single center stringer. The treads are 3” thick and the see through open portion will be 4.25” (7.25” rise) the gaps in the cable railing will be no more than 4”. I know some people would be concerned having little kids but it Is very safe. A: It looks like you answered your own question. My question to you is "is this style of stair rail appropriate to your home? Nothing cheesier looking than a Colonial with a Modern fireplace. Don't do something that could look out of place or cheap. **Q: please help with awkward windows in bathroom!!!** *(in Windows)* We need to fit a 48-inch vanity and a shower enclosure under two very "horizontal" windows. First I thought it would help if we tiled to ceilings to make space cohesive, but now think maybe that just accentuates weird horizonatl lines of windows? Also, prior owner had mirror extending width of vanity - thinking it might be better for mirror to echo width of window and then have two sconces on either side? There will be pony wall between vanity and shower enclosure - all ideas welcome - thank you!!! Also - lower sill of window is about 6 feet from floor - so makes mirror placement a bit low. Ceilings are 9 feet +. Here are pictures of before and yet to come - A: Uncertain that the photo showing tiled walls is current condition or previous. You could continue the tile behind your vanity and then hang a mirror with some shape beyond rectangle. Is your vanity going to be built-in style like the one pictured? Another option would be to pick a vanity that is more a piece of furniture, looking free standing. You could introduce something that is less boxy like a live-edge face or cast concrete top. **Q: Master Bedroom Wall Above Bed** *(in Home Decorating)* I'm finally getting to the master bedroom in decorating our house. In our previous home, we used an interior designer to help us with furnishing and decorating the MBR. A year later, we decided to move and I brought the MBR furniture and decor with us to our new (to us) home. In the first picture at our former home, you'll see that our bed was situated between 2 large windows so that the mirror in between looked proportional. Now our bed is on a large wall without windows. I think maybe the mirror looks a little too small now. What do you think? I'm trying to visualize keeping the mirror and maybe adding a long narrow print over each nightstand. Would that look good? Or should I get a larger round mirror? I think I might prefer a round mirror above the bed to break up all the rectangles, but another option would be to place 3 square prints over the bed and nothing above the nightstands. What do you all think? A: Needs some architectural detail on either side of be or whole wall. A single tall shutter door painted in a deep color and mounted on the wall behind each nightstand. **Q: HELP! 1978 FADING BEAUTY IN NEED OF FACELIFT!** *(in Remodeling)* Hi there, I am about to do a total interior renovation and would love ideas on the exterior. Complete painting and a new roof (same material, metal or just metal accents?) is a given, but I would like to completely update the exterior. The neighborhood was entirely built in the '70's and I plan on selling in about 5 years. The upstairs master has the balcony which I find too "boxed in" and I would like to frame the roof to cover it but open the balcony to get a breeze and so we can have a place to sit during our dramatic thunderstorms. The "second front door" in photo \#4 is going. I plan on closing this up with windows to the kitchen. I also would like a circular drive because no one comes to the front door currently and they wonder if I'm living in a duplex...I think I'd like to work with the rock facade, but beyond that I am stumped.
