> Moss recently completed a sizable two-story addition and renovation of our Arlington home. On the first floor, they expanded the kitchen; added an adjoining family room and powder room; moved the dining space; and converted the existing dining room into an office. On the second floor, they converted a small bedroom into a master suite with a walk-in closet. They also gutted the existing hall bath on the second floor. They did additional renovations throughout the rest of the house, including some really nice custom built-ins.
>
> Before choosing Moss we interviewed several DMV design-build firms, and were happy with our choice. Moss gave us the best bang for our buck; we were able to do much more on our budget than we would have with the much pricier options (the more expensive firms told us a two-story addition was not achievable within our budget), while still having a nice-looking design and finishes.
>
> Moss is very well-managed and has good internal processes. They were very good at estimating costs and strategically allocating our budget so that we were spending money on things that we would enjoy and would help with resale value. Their 3D model walkthrough software was super-helpful with deciding on a floorplan. We especially love the kitchen, master bathroom, and office.
>
> Everyone on our project team was great to work with. The work crews steadily worked on the project – they didn’t disappear for long stretches like you hear about with some contractors. The project team was flexible about making minor adjustments along the way and addressing any of the minor things that inevitably come up on a project of this size. We’d definitely recommend Moss to anyone considering a renovation. We love our new house!

**Comment from Moss Building & Design:**

> Thank you so much for this wonderful review! We are always pleased to know that we've changed our customers lives for the better!

> MOSS and specifically Tyler were great to work with. Our project was complex, requiring foundation repairs to an old addition, and significant reconstruction inside and out. The finished product is show stopping in addition to being structurally sound. Hats off to MOSS for tackling this project with us and bringing their professionalism and expertise.

**Comment from Moss Building & Design:**

> Thank you so much for the review, Suzanne! So happy to hear the finished project is show stopping!

**★★★★★ — Eugene Jung, Feb. 2023**

> We had Moss build us a 500 sq ft addition in the back of our home with a bar in it. We chose them based on great reviews from the internet as well as fellow neighbors and we were not disappointed! Our experience from start to finish was amazing. The estimator (DJ), the designer (Kristen), project manager (Patrick and Bob) were all a pleasure to work with. Their attention to detail was second to none and we couldn’t be happier with the outcome. The Moss contractors (Lonny, Steve, and Jim) and all the subcontractors that came out were also all friendly, competent, and professional and were all a pleasure to meet and work with as well. We want to especially give a shout-out to our project manager Patrick. He had the immense task of managing this entire project from start to finish on top of us having a lot of custom requests and changes along the way. He made sure to ensure our satisfaction by taking each new request we had and making sure they were completed. I wouldn’t say we weren’t the easiest of clients so we greatly appreciate Patrick for dealing with us in such a respectful, professional, and kind manner. It was great to know we had him in our corner during this process. We highly recommend Moss for all your remodeling and addition needs!

**Comment from Moss Building & Design:**

> Thank you for this wonderful review, Eugene. So glad your MOSS experience was so incredible!

> We used Moss for an extensive home renovation to our Vienna, Virginia colonial in 2021/2022. The scope of the project included converting a carport / screened-in porch into a large four-season family room, reallocating space in the former family room for a laundry and mudroom, converting a bedroom into a closet and primary bathroom, and refinishing our sons' bathroom. In addition, Moss expanded our galley kitchen, reallocating space from the former dining room to expand the kitchen's footprint and create a walk-in hidden pantry. Throughout our home, Moss added thoughtful design touches such as block-and-panel millwork in our formal dining room, herringbone tile in our new fireplace, and built in bookshelves along the wall of the family room.

> From a customer service perspective, we worked with Team Alpha and could not have been happier with our experience. Sean was our team lead, and from our very first meeting, he was courteous, thoughtful, professional and pragmatic. Working with Sean never felt "sales-y" and we appreciated his candor while we discussed the scope of the project. Sean was always mindful of our budget, noting upfront when certain design decisions would stretch our agreed-upon number. Like any construction project of this magnitude, we exceeded our budget, but it was always at our discretion - there were no surprises, which we truly appreciated. Our design team was led by Liz and Marta. Liz was endlessly patient as we tweaked our floorplan design (and tweaked it again!) Marta went above and beyond in the selections of finishes, accommodating some pretty tricky requests (for example, we wanted a porcelain tile with a marble look in our primary bathroom) courteously and seamlessly. She even went out of her way to review fixtures we purchased from outside retailers to ensure that they would fit the design of the spaces. Sean, Liz and Marta saved us thousands of dollars by repurposing our old cabinetry in our new walk-in pantry, adding paint and other custom touches to create a flawless look. During construction, we worked with Marty to oversee the project and Jeff on day-to-day finishing. Both Marty and Jeff were extremely easy to work with, patiently accompanying us on our multiple walk-throughs to identify changes, improvements, and finishes. Marty remembered to remediate even the littles detail, and did so with a smile. I never had to ask him twice! Jeff was especially kind to our 5-year old son, who always wanted to be his special helper. I know he misses seeing "Mr. Jeff" everyday!
>
> When we embarked on this project, it was important to us to select a partner that would do beautiful work with minimal hassle. Moss certainly exceeded our expectations in terms of quality, thoughtfulness, responsiveness, and finished product. We have happily recommended Team Alpha to our neighbors and friends. Thank you Sean, Marty, Liz, Marta, Jeff, and all of your teammates for our beautiful home and our great experience.

**Comment from Moss Building & Design:**

> Thank you, Alison, for this incredible review. We strive to provide each customer with a remodeling experience that fulfills their dreams for their home while also providing expertise and communication every step of the way, from start to finish. We're so happy that you love the changes to your home - it was a pleasure working with and for your family.

**★★★★★ — Richard Barnhill, April 2021**

> We used Moss to build a 2nd story addition onto our Arlington rambler/ranch. From the start, the Moss team was professional, on time, responsive and great to work with. At no point did we ever feel any pressure to commit to their services or did they push anything on us that we did not ask for. They simply listen to you and design around what you describe. All of the work was done in house, from design, engineering and build. Once the project got started, the communication with their team only increased. We were frequently informed of what would be going on, what the time lines were, when payments were due and when we needed to get information back to them to complete any upcoming tasks.
>
> As one can imagine, adding a 2nd story is very disruptive to daily life - which is why we did not stay in the home during the process. However, as the pandemic loomed in early 2020 and our apartment lease was expiring, the Moss team did everything possible to prepare our space to move back in, while they were putting the finishing touches on the project. Prior to this, I would walk the project each day after work, checking the progress and seeing where we were. If at any point I had a question or noticed an issue, I would text or call our project manager (John) and get a response within an hour or 2. Often times, he would be out first thing in the morning to confirm what I asked and then provide their solution.
>
> We have now lived in our renovated space for a year and I can say that the quality of the build and execution of the plans were perfect. Additionally, all of the work that was done by the subcontractors has been great as well. We have had no issues with plumbing, structure, finishes, etc.
>
> On top of all of this, I would like to point out that when we got our initial quotes, Moss was by far the most reasonable - like not even close to the others, in a good way! From the start, their initial estimate only increased slightly, based on selections that we made and they were VERY transparent about pricing through the process. Their company size allows them to leverage services at a much lower cost that they actually pass on to the customer, but at the same time, that company size does not cause them to treat the customer any different. The whole time, we felt valued and like their entire team was invested in the success of our build. We felt the price that we paid was very reasonable (for Northern Virginia) and would 100% recommend talking to Moss if you are considering a construction project.

**Comment from Moss Building & Design:**

> Thank you for this review, Richard! So glad we could assist with your home remodel.

> We just wrapped up the design phase of a bathroom + sunroom + garage renovation for our 1885 house here in Herndon, VA. The team has been fun, thorough, available and just plain smart since day 1. We went through a lot of design iteration and are excited to see it come to life. Demolition work just started a couple of weeks ago, but the team has been meticulously clean and very thoughtful. Thanks Sean, Liz and Emily--we can't wait for next steps!

**Comment from Moss Building & Design:**

> Thank you so much for this kind review, we appreciate it so much.

> My husband and I have completed several projects with Moss and have been extremely happy. From bathroom renovation, screened in porch and kitchen renovation Moss has been wonderful to work with. From project conception, design, material selection to construction it truly is very flawless. Moss just finished renovating our kitchen a few months back and love the results. We now have a very functional and a very beautiful kitchen. Will always recommend Moss to family and friends for all their home renovation projects.

**Comment from Moss Building & Design:**

> Thank you so much - we loved working on this project with you all!

**★★★★★ — Greg and Jenn Zschunke, Dec. 2020**

> We are mid-process in a kitchen remodel with MOSS. From the start, it's been a great experience. Our consultant, Nick, laid out all the details of costs for us from the start - there have been zero surprises. Our designer, William, has been amazing to work with - a true perfectionist, he has been to our house multiple times to discuss layouts, take measurements, and talk through ideas. If he had suggestions that worked for us, we implemented them - other times, we wanted to take things out, and he did so without pushing back. We have always felt that our team at MOSS is looking out for us and our budget and bottom line. We'll start the remodel early in 2021 and can't wait to see the completed space!

**Comment from Moss Building & Design:**

> Thank you for this mid construction review. We hope your remodel turned out beautifully!

**★★★★★ — Kathi Brown, July 2020**

> I used Moss Building & Design for a complete kitchen and bath (3 total) remodel. Plus, they replaced my builder grade carpet and vinyl with a luxury laminate. I am extremely happy with the quality of the work and overall finishes. From the bespoke drop zone and benches to the out of the box flooring and cabinets - the caring attention to my home was obvious throughout the project. From my first meeting to the last – my team (Nick, Matt, William, David, Ryan and Bo) did an exemplary job. I highly recommend using Moss for your home projects.

**Comment from Moss Building & Design:**

> Thank you Kathi for this incredible review, we're so glad we could help with your home remodel.

**★★★★★ — Eric W, July 2020**

> We chose Moss for our kitchen remodel after speaking to a handful of design and build firms. Given the size of the project and the investment we wanted to be certain that we did our due diligence. After our initial conversation with Nick, we immediately felt comfortable with Moss, and it was clear to us that they offered best balance between process, experience, and price.
>
> The project was a complete kitchen renovation – new cabinets, countertops, appliances, and a slight redesign in floorplan. We had a vision of what we wanted, but with so many decisions to be made, being able to work with Emily and design team was invaluable. Over the course of the design sessions we were able to see the kitchen come to life in the 3D renderings and adjust things on the fly as we discussed options and ideas. With any renovation, it’s always a balance between getting exactly what you want and budget – Emily did a great job of keeping us on track, was quick to let us know the cost implications of selections we were considering, and offered suggestions, insight, and guidance throughout the process.
>
> As the design process wrapped up and the project schedule was published, the COVID lockdowns started. With so much uncertainty, we were not sure when the project would get started and obviously had concerns related to having contractors in our home during the initial months of pandemic. We spoke to Matt (Project Lead) regarding our concerns and he was extremely understanding, wanting to make sure we were comfortable before any work would begin. We decided to move forward and the project ultimately started a few weeks late (end of April) due to the cabinets being delayed as a result of the shutdown, but once things got started they moved quickly with the project being largely completed within five weeks. Our on-site project manager (Chad) did a great job of keeping on top of things, informing us of what was planned for each day/week, and was always available when we had questions. Two members (Kai and Luis) of the team were onsite pretty much every day and handled all the trades other than flooring and drywall/painting. The team put on the project was intentional as to minimize the number of people that needed to be in the house and these guys were phenomenal.
>
> Given we were stuck in the house for entire project, the guys went out of their way to make sure we were comfortable with the process and progress. The upside of being home during the project was that it afforded us the opportunity to interact with them on a more regular basis when questions arose or decisions needed to be made, and without exception, they were always accommodating and willing to go the extra mile – not sure that can be said for many other firms. Obviously, no project is perfect and ours was no exception as some unexpected items arose, but again, in every case, the team was accommodating and worked through the issue to provide the best solution in the most expeditious manner.
>
> Having a major renovation done during a pandemic is not the way we envisioned things playing out, but we could not be happier with the outcome and the team at Moss.

**Comment from Moss Building & Design:**

> Thank you so much for this review and feedback, Eric.

**★★★★★ — A Aguirre, May 2020**

> We are so happy with the results from our bathroom renovation. I particularly enjoyed working with our team - Molly, Galen, Jim, and Jessica from Mosaic Tile. Moss and Mosaic Tile listened carefully to our wants and helped us design the perfect renovation. I appreciated the collaboration that they provided as we did know pretty much what we wanted but needed to get a professional sounding board (not to mention experts to execute the project.) I appreciated when they were able to say that something probably wouldn't look good (for example, we wanted to put our recessed lights in the shower next to the wall and Moss mentioned that it would probably cast a weird shadow on the tile. That kind of honest feedback is really critical.) The work done was meticulous and the service was always friendly and professional. Thank you, Moss! (My only gripe is that now our teenage daughters insist on showering in our bathroom because it's so nice now. Actually, I don't mind. We are getting great pleasure out of the remodel.)

**Comment from Moss Building & Design:**

> We're so glad you had such a wonderful experience with our team!

> I used Moss for a complete home rehab and addition. They reviewed many design options with me before we moved into construction. Once construction begin they were very responsive and communicative. Would recommend and hire again.

## Community Q&A

**Q: What type of lights are you using in the ceiling?** *(in Photo Questions)*

Finishing our basement but leaving the ceiling open and painting it black.. trying to figure out what type of lighting to use?

A: Thank you for your question! The lights are simply recessed can lights. Good luck!

**Q: where can I find that Forbidden planet poster?** *(in Photo Questions)*

I love that poster on the wall. Where can I find one like it?

A: Hi Geraldine,
Thanks for your question! We reached out to our customer, who handled that aspect of the design. Their response:
" I just downloaded a Vector File of the image from the internet. The poster itself is 10’ x 6’ and is done in two sections vertically. The poster was printed on vinyl with a three mil Matte UV Laminate coating. It was applied to the surface like wallpaper. The surface where the poster lays is plywood covered with drywall (for a smoother surface) and was primed. The poster has a metal steel frame made up of hollow tubing. The metal frame came from: https://www.metalsdepot.com/products/hrsteel2.phtml?page=rttube. The frame was mounted to the masonry with 3” standoffs away from wall. The back of the frame was lit with LED strip lighting. We used 2 rolls of strip lights and 2 transformers."
We hope this helps, happy hunting!
Best,
MOSS
