I bought this rug a couple weeks ago thinking it would work, but now I feel the new flooring is much more grey than I thought it would be and the rug is warmer tones. Does this rug look bad with this flooring? I can’t tell if it’s just the lighting or? A: kulrn, you pulled that together very nicely! **Q: Plant ledge and wall underneath need help!** *(in Design Dilemma)* We recently purchased a new-to-us home, built in 2010. There’s a lot I love about it, and a few things I don’t particularly like. One of them is this plant ledge. The previous owners left us their dusty fake greenery (photo 1) I’ve since cleaned it up (photo 2) but it needs something. The problem is that I don’t like a lot of clutter and I’m allergic to dust. Whatever goes up there has to be easily cleaned. Anybody have ideas for me? I’d also like help with the wall over the console table. That thermostat has to stay for the time being and I don’t want to cover it up and impede airflow. I’d love a temporary solution until I can get the thermostat moved. As to style, I’m traditional with some minimalist tendencies if that makes any sense! I like for the things around me to be either functional or loved. I think that’s why I’m struggling with this area. It is completely decorative and I have zero treasured items to contribute to it right now. A: Some ideas - You can make the thermostat disappear behind a tall table lamp that does not generate heat or amongst a grouping of pictures/mirrors or both. I like the cove molding in image 3 And you can take the ledge to the ceiling with the treatment in image 4 **Q: Colour choice and tile layout for bathroom** *(in Design Dilemma)* We have selected tiles and the colours are soft, slightly chalky and beautiful. We would like to use a mix of grey and beige from this story. We are not sure, however, how to best place the various tiles to create a scheme that works. The bathroom could be inclined to look a bit tunnel-like if the long wall isn't treated correctly. We have found a beautiful 60x60cm floor tile in the grey, which has a matched non-slip shower tile, and are thinking about building up a small step into the shower area to break up the length of the room. Would welcome advice on whether this colour scheme works and how to place the tiles. I have also posted a hand-drawn plan. There is also a white version of these. Below a photo from manufacturers' catalogue: This is a possible alternative tile. It is also grey with a white textured complimentary tile. Not our first choice but could it work better? A: Thanks Deborah, I would go with the floor style of the last picture. A modern take on a classic look. Unless the rest of your home is more traditional. Then I would choose a floor as per image 3. Both on the 45 degree. You can see what can happen on a perpendicular installation in image 4. They have slivers of tile at the walls. Not nice at all. I have personally installed tile in the past and always dry lay it first, so that I do not end up with a situation like that. This installation also emphasizes that the walls are off. Moving the tiles 6" or so to the left or going on a 45 degree would have been better here. Youtube is a great source for educational videos - know your stuff, so you can catch the contractor before he makes a mistake. Or at least you can discuss it with him before the job starts, so he knows to be on his toes. I am doing a whole second floor of a century home locally and the bathroom is almost the same shape as yours. See www.63centre.ca - a website I built for the client with decor as per her wishes. It may have ideas for you as well. Take a look at the pebble floor that she is considering - she likes the farmhouse look. Once you choose floor I could help you with the walls. Go to Google and enter the phrase that you think is what you are looking for, click on images, save the ones you like (I always put them on my desk top - easy to find) and post them here - so I can see what your taste is. I would not break up the floor with a step - it will be an annoying toe stubber and not add to the visual. I think that the herringbone pattern will solve the tunnel problem. So will horizontal tiles on the end wall. Do separate the shower with a tempered glass panel sunk into the floor and set into the wall and all the way to the ceiling. No door - nice and clean. AND easy to clean :) Plenty of images on the above mentioned website. One last thing for now; if you can, make the double vanity longer, I think that you may be able too since the tub is going. Four doors at least with a bank of drawers in the centre, room permitting. For tile I like a grey/beige or slightly green/beige grey with a non shiny surface mimicking natural stone. Again depending on the style in the rest of your home. Your current shower looks like a 30" x 30"- not very big - I would still consider forgoing the bidet and have a roomier shower. Like one poster said here; switch the current toilet for a dual purpose toilet/bidet. Rinske **Q: How to resolve an uneven sink reveal on undermount sink** *(in Remodeling)* We recently had a new stainless steel undermount sink and quartz countertop installed. When they came to do the template for our counters, we told them we wanted a 1/4" negative reveal (with the countertop extending 1/4" beyond the edge of the sink). The countertop fabricators did not use the correct template when they cut out the opening for our sink. As a result, we have parts of it that have a negative reveal varying from 1/16 to 3/4" (almost an inch in some areas) and several sections about 4" long that have a 1/16-1/4" positive reveal, with the top edge of the sink and white caulk (!) exposed. I understand that some variance is normal, but this is dramatic and is so visibly uneven. It looks really bad!! We have had the fabricators back several times, they attempted to find a larger sink, however the same issue is present - the shape of the hole does not match the shape of the sinks. They attempted to remove our countertop today (to replace it or to cut the hole more evenly) and it will not come off - they tried cutting the caulk and prying it, but the cabinets were starting to pull up off of the ground. They said they can try to cut out a bigger opening by hand, but we are concerned that it will still be uneven and/or that they would scratch the sink. Any tips on what we can do from here? We have already paid them and they seem willing to try to fix it. We would prefer a new counter with the correct opening and don't feel that that is unreasonable, but don't want our brand new cabinets ruined in the process. Or any tips on how to get the counter off? A: You are correct to want to have this fixed and I see no other way than them replacing the countertop at their expense and without damage to your cabinets. Suggest they contact the manufacturer of the adhesive to ask what solvent can be used to get the countertop off. Be sure the cabinets are protected from the solvent. If they refuse to/cannot do this - hire another contractor to fix this and let the first contractor know that you will mitigate the damage($$$$) as best as you can, but will hold them responsible to reimburse you the new expenses. This is an option: You may suggest that you are willing to take them to court if you have to. Document the whole process. Or if you think that you can live with it, or if you are thinking of moving, ask for a rebate. This has worked for me in the past. I purchased 8 dining chairs from an online retailer and the chairs were different from the picture on their website. They offered a healthy rebate and I accepted. I would have rather have had the chairs the way they were depicted, but I could live with it and I am also the only one in our family who would notice this. There is always trouble when you have a sharp eye. ;) **Q: help with colours and bed combination for guest room** *(in Design Dilemma)* I need advice please. I'm not sure how to add some colour to my guest room. I just hung new curtains, they are navy and blue. The piping on the curtains are green. I'm nit sure if I should get white bed covers cause I think the existing just don't go too well. How can j bing more colour like green in the room . The red carpet will go. I would like an opinion on the beds for a guest room. do I keep the single beds or replace them with a double bed? any advice would help please?
