What kind of lighting is used in the neiches?

A: Seems to me that it's Slot lighting, where the rope or LED light isn't concealed.

A: Maybe it was the method of Cove Lighting. It seems so at least... If you do some research, you'll find more info and how to implement it on a niche area.
