**★★★★★ — Lucy Deckard, Sept. 2021**

> The Stearns team designed a built an outdoor office for us, and we couldn't be happier with it. Since this project was a bit of a splurge for us, we had a limited budget, and the designers were extremely helpful in coming up with ways to cut down the cost while keeping the features we really wanted. The quality of the construction was excellent. Highly recommend.

**Comment from Stearns Design Build:**

> We are so happy that you are enjoying your new office. It's always a pleasure working with you!

**★★★★★ — Tom Peck, Nov. 2019**

> Stearns Design Build completely remodeled our kitchen. This was a big project, and they did a great job. We started with the design phase, which took a while to get it just right. Their designers were patient and very helpful. Construction took about six weeks. The crew was thoughtful, protecting the rest of the house, and did excellent work. We are thrilled with the results.

**Comment from Stearns Design Build:**

> Thank you for the kind words! We are happy you had a pleasant experience with us!

**★★★★★ — Jan, Oct. 2019**

> This is our 4th remodel with Stearns. Their project manager Jimmie was very polite and always responded quickly to our questions. Although a small project to correct drainage problems at the front entrance to our home, Stearns took it on willingly. They found a simple solution and talked with us throughout the project when challenges arose. They found the least intrusive way to improve our entry way and worked efficiently.

**★★★★★ — jlpatt2015, April 2016**

> Stearns replaced siding and windows on gable ends of my home. Water penetration and condensation behind the siding needed to be remedied. They researched solutions to solving the problem and made a mock-up of the final plan, which was so helpful for my understanding. Skilled craftsmen, efficient and personable. Always willing to answer questions, and update me with the progress. Jobsite was always kept clean and organized. Coordination with other contractors was excellent. Professional, organized and provided clear communication throughout the construction process.

**Comment from Stearns Design Build:**

> Thank you so much. We really enjoyed working with you on your project!

**★★★★★ — jandk1961, March 2016**

> Stearns Design Build remodeled the master bath in our 1970's home. The project included replacing a tub and shower with just a glassed-in shower, knocking out a wall to install a large picture window, and replacing a vanity cabinet and adding an additional sink. They gave invaluable ideas and suggestions throughout the design phase. During the construction phase they went to great efforts to keep dust and debris limited to the construction area. They stayed in close contact with us and kept us informed each step of the way. The finished product met all our expectations. This was the second time we had worked with this company on a project in our home and will not hesitate to do so for any future remodeling.

**Comment from Stearns Design Build:**

> Thank you so much for taking the time to write a review. It was a pleasure working for you. We look forward to your next project.

> Stearns built a sunroom/den for us with central air and central heat with a fireplace. It is both functional and beautiful. They did a superb job.

**Comment from Stearns Design Build:**

> Stearns designed and built a house, shop, and an open pole barn for my wife and I. All interactions and communications were professional and accurate. The design process was excellent with a view toward the best functionality and value. There were many opportunities to discuss pros and cons of various layouts and materials of construction. The process included selections for everything in the house and there were no (none) surprises at the end where basic things like light fixtures turned out to be "not included". The build process included weekly status communications and clear communication around changes--no doing something and then an unexpected cost adder. All change costs were dealt with up front in a professional way. It became clear to my wife and I that Stearns intended to deliver everything under the contract in a complete and quality fashion. There were some issues at the end concerning consistent operation of the automatic gate to the property. It took several months but this was dealt with to our complete satisfaction. At the close of our home contract, we asked Stearns to build a small floating dock on our pond, which they did for a very reasonable price. We are more than satisfied with the work by Stearns and would not hesitate to recommend them to anyone.

**Comment from Stearns Design Build:**

> Thanks! What a pleasure it was working with you two. We could not ask for kinder clients or a more beautiful piece of property to work on. It is clients like you that make us excited to come to work every day.

  - Description: This kitchen remodel is stunning! We replaced the black granite counters with quartz selected for its creamy marbled background of neutral white with meandering gray-ashen veins dotted with veiled charcoal speckles. This set the stage for updating the existing honey-toned wood cabinetry with fresh, lightweight, luminous, and subtly sophisticated shades of white + black in the kitchen and other rooms throughout the home.

By maintaining a contemporary + modern edge with the rest of the home, we incorporated transitional elements offered in warm tones & organic materials, which produced a high-impact + unique design for this feature wall. Working with a handful of existing base components from the original built-in cabinetry, a floor-to-ceiling "secret" door clad in intricately patterned wood concealed a large storage closet with adjustable shelves.

This custom home, built in 2002, needed cosmetic, technical, and functional upgrades to make it more enjoyable and easier to live in. In addition, our clients desired an interior that was still traditional but infused some modern colors and elements and was designed for aging in place. - Description: This cozy kitchen works great and is a nice gathering point for guests and family. Unfortunately, despite being open to a large vaulted ceiling family room, it is isolated from that large space. Dividing it from the rest of the house is a wall blocking the view and an oddly shaped fur-down. The solution for this is opening the kitchen up onto that room without compromising its function. Adding a glass door into the laundry room provides more light to the back of the kitchen. Finally, a touch of…

## Community Q&A

**Q: Shower wall tile information?** *(in Photo Questions)*

I'd love to know the tile information, thank you!

A: Sure! The shower tile we used is Fireclay Seedling tile. Here is a link: Fireclay tile

**Q: Interior Door Colour** *(in Polls)*

Hello, I’m building a new home. My style is modern organic. Walls, trim and ceiling will be Chantilly Lace. Floors are light white oak. Cabinets are a caramel rift white oak. Window trim is black.
Do I paint the interior doors- Agreeable Gray to keep things light and airy. Or do I paint them Iron Ore for drama and to complement window trim?
Photos 1 + 2 show door options.
Photo 3 shows current living room
Photo 4 shows style

A: Hi Brittany,

I really love your style! Your new home is going to be stunning!

To me, I think Agreeable Gray is your best option. This color leans more taupe/beige, and to me that looks and feels much more natural and organic, which fits your style. I think big, black doors are a bit much and feel hard and sharp. If your style was simply modern, I think it would be a good choice. But since you are looking for something warmer and cozier, the gray is much softer and fits in your color palette better on a larger surface like a door.

I do, however, love black for your door handles, railings, and windows! I think the black in smaller doses like that really gives you the modern part of your style, but the white on the walls, the warm wood floors, and gray doors give you the more organic part of your style.

I hope this helps!

**Q: island design and refrigerator placement in new kitchen** *(in Design Dilemma)*

Currently designing a new kitchen island and placement of sink, dishwasher and pullout garbage. The island is 8 ft long. First option is dishwasher, sink, garbage and drawers left to right. Other option is garbage, sink, dishwasher, drawers left to right. Also questioning placement of refrigerator between two cabinets or on end of cabinets. If between two cabinets there would be a decorative cabinet with glass doors and lower drawers 27inches deep with upper cabinet 15 inches deep. Similar to attached photo

A: Hi Karen!

I really like the plans you have for your kitchen! I think whatever you choose, you will be happy with.

To help you out with sink placement, I think a great way to decide which side to put the dishwasher comes down to your dominant hand. If you are right handed, I would place it to the right of the sink so the movement of dishes from the sink to the dishwasher will feel more natural and won't require you to reach across your body. However, if you are left handed, I would place it to left of the sink for the same reasons. Aesthetically, there is no difference between the two options, it really just comes down to functionality and what works best for you.

With the refrigerator, I think what will help you make this decision is to figure out what you want/need more of: storage space or counter space. If storage space is more important to you, definitely choose to put cabinets on both sides of the refrigerator. However, if having as much counterspace as possible is most important, I would move the refrigerator all the way to the end. This will give you one, seamless and usable counterspace rather than two, smaller, less functional ones. To me, it appears you already are going to have lots of counterspace between the island and back wall, so I would suggest choosing the more storage option. However, you know your wants and needs much better than I do, so choose based on which of the two you need more of.

I hope this helps!

**Q: Looking for help with roof shingle color** *(in Design Dilemma)*

Hello all. I see there are many discussions about choosing roof shingle colors, but I'm still confused about what will work best with my house. We are using Landmark Pro shingles. I'm trying to choose between Driftwood, Moire Black, and Colonial Slate (or something more gray). Here's a current picture of our house and a mockup with the new black door that will be installed in a couple of months (also included a closeup of the brick). I also plan to paint the shutters a warm black to match the door and add more modern exterior lighting. What roof shingle color do you think would go best? Thank you!

A: Hello! Your home is very beautiful, and I like the changes you are going to make with the additions of black doors, shutters, and gutters!

I disagree with other commenters. I would strongly suggest going with the Moire Black shingles. I think black shingles will really help tie the whole outside together with the other black features. I don't think it will look harsh at all. I think it will make your home look a little more modern and stately.

I would certainly avoid any brown colored shingles, it seems you want to get away from that color, and you are already getting a lot of that color from the brick on the house.

I hope this helps!

**Q: New flooring for laundry room - mix or match.** *(in Flooring)*

My laundry room is directly across from a bathroom in a short but wide hallway. i generally leave both doors open. i want to replace the vinyl flooring in the laundry with tile. Should i use a similar tile to match with the bathroom or go totally different. In the photo, you can see the bath to the left and the laundry to the right. The other rooms off the hall are my office (visible) and a bedroom on the left passed the bath - both carpeted.

A: Hello!

Because you like to leave your doors open, I would suggest choosing an identical or similar tile to what is in your bathroom. This will create cohesion between your spaces, especially ones so close together and visible from each other.

However, it would also be okay to choose something very intentionally different. I would definitely advocate for this if you are unable to find a similar tile to your bathroom. When choosing a different tile, ensure the colors work within the space. Do you have colored cabinets in your laundry room? Maybe a unique wall color or artwork? Derive colors and patterns from things currently in the space, so that way your new tile doesn't feel random or out of place.

I hope this helps!

**Q: Wall color/wallpaper advice** *(in Paint)*

Trying to add some life to this room
and thinking about a dark green paint on the wall behind the tv and a light/neutral wallpaper on the long wall with the fireplace, leaving the remaining walls white. Will that feel too disjointed?

A: Hello!

I don't think you need to do something on both the TV and fireplace wall, I would choose only one. By changing these walls, you are creating a focal point, and having more than one can overwhelm a space. Personally, I would choose the fireplace wall to change up. I think that will have a greater design impact, especially since it ties into your dining room, so you are improving 2 spaces at once!

Generally, I tend to shy away from wallpaper. Wallpaper does not typically age well, so I am afraid you would want to change it out in a few years. However, there are some wallpapers out there that are quite nice and would age well. My advice with my clients is to choose wallpaper that isn't too busy. Meaning one with few colors and simple patterns. I think dark green would look lovely in your space (as you've chosen), so if you do want to go with wallpaper, that dark forest green should give you your starting point in your search. Here is an example:

Simple in color, but has some texture for flare.

My best recommendation would be to choose a dark green paint for that fireplace wall. It will really help draw focus to your beautiful fireplace and dining room. From there, I would leave that TV as is or paint it a simple, warm white. If you are afraid that TV wall will feel too bare, consider a piece of artwork to hang there rather than do something to the whole wall. I think that might give you the visual interest you are looking for without having to do anything to the whole wall.

I hope this helps!
