It was a super frustrating process until Slate Design Studio stepped in. Our professional was able to provide digital renderings of the house showcasing a carefully selected array of colors so that we could clearly see how the section of the house would look in its entirety next to every other surface it touched and needed to coordinate with. Our professional offered to change colors as needed, or answer questions for us throughout the process, and he was prompt with his replies when we asked him anything. We were able to specify the brand of paint we wanted to use, and our digital rendition was tweaked accordingly, with paint colors and product numbers listed so that we knew exactly what to look for in the store. Suddenly the process was simple - we may never go back to our antiquated system of choosing colors. My husband and I have almost decided on one color we both like (the options he presented are really good, and one was a color we never even considered, but frankly like better than our own ideas) , and painting will begin in August. These are just the frames, there will be three doors per frame, bottom two are plain white, top one is glass. It's the one here http://www.ikea.com/us/en/catalog/products/S29059448/ only I plan to put the glass row on top. I have height extension cabinets that I can add on to these for more storage. For the low point of the ceiling on the right, the height extension would be very close to the ceiling, within inches. The height extension would not block the air intake vent you see. Should I add it? More storage would be nice, but would it overwhelm the space? Look too tall? Please note the table is pulled back from its normal position and the rug won't be there. Hope the sketches help. **Q: Kitchen remodel-option 1 vs option 2 & any advice?** *(in Remodeling)* Hello everyone, First timer here. I'm remodeling my rental's kitchen. In the original layout, there is a closet (belongs to the adjacent bedroom) occupied a portion of the kitchen, and the stove next to the closet wall hampers the movement, also I'm thinking to install more cabinets, so I think I'll close off the door to the hallway to have a longer wall to achieve my goal. Now I have two options: Option 1 is to relocate the stove/range hood to the other wall. Cost=relocate the stove/range hood part but less cabinets than option 2 (which is around $1000 less) Option 2 is to take out the closet (non-bearing wall) and make it a U shape kitchen Cost=demo of the closet+$1000 more than option 1+I have to buy wardrobe for the bedroom If there is any other way than option 1 and 2, please also let me know too. My second question is: should I put upper cabinets on the window wall? I'd really appreciate any advice/suggestion. A: Out of the two options, I think option 2 will work and look the best. I like the idea of a full wall of storage and keeping the stove where it is. I would recommend opening up the wall between the dining and kitchen areas where possible. It seems a bit cramped. **Q: need help for interior trim** *(in Design Dilemma)* We are in the process of remodeling our kitchen cabinets and floors. If we choose a white finish for the cabinets and darker hardwood floor, do we have to paint the trim to match the cabinets or keep as is to match the floor? A: Without pictures it's hard to know. As trim usually extends into other rooms I would keep it consistent from space to space. My preference usually goes to white trim with dark floors, but I think it's more important to be consistent throughout the home. **Q: Jazz up my House!!** *(in Design Dilemma)* We just purchased this house. I don't hate the exterior. I don't love it either. There is just something missing but I don't know what. Right now, we aren't going to redo siding/windows or add a porch. I'm thinking more along the lines of shutter color? door color? What color(s) will help it go from the 1984 to 2017? A: I think you need a bit of contrast in your color. It's a fine house but it doesn't pop. By adding contrast such as in this photo you can make elements stand out a bit more. Obviously this photo/remodel involved a bit more than just changing paint colors but the white an grey color scheme is simple and modern and makes a subtle statement. Add contrast would be my suggestion. **Q: Ceiling mounted projector color** *(in Design Dilemma)* Hi, in a large family and media room with a white painted ceiling what would be the ideal color of a ceiling mounted projector, white or black. The opposite wall where the screen will drop from is black stone wall. One side is white wall while the rest of the wall are large French windows with off white/beige blackouts. Regards, A: White. Keep it tight to the ceiling and it will blend in more than a black projector. **Q: Floor Plan Feedback as well as Expert Opinion on Roof Lines** *(in Building a Home)* I think we have decided on this house and like the plan. My main concern is the roof line in the back by the upstairs rear cutout. It looks kinda strange aesthetically, but it also looks like it would not let rain drain properly off of the roof. Can anyone tell me if this will be a problem? I would also like any suggestions for tweaks to the floor plan. There are some good things that you can work with and they can help you weed out the bad. Identify the areas that you really like and why. There may be ways to capitalize on those areas and enhance the floor plan to meet your needs. A new home is too important and expensive to spend money on a stock floor plan you don't love. Spend the money upfront on a good designer and they will help you save more money on the back end and will help you create a home you will love. An experienced architect should be able to iron out the issues on the exterior. I would recommend working with someone that works in 3D modeling.
