We’re remodeling our cabinets to designer white and are having an awful time finding granite, quartz or quartzite - they’re either too busy or too white or too blue/grey (the floor is very warm). Id love some recommendations. The other two pics are two slabs we picked out with a tile from our floor. A: Best choice is white quartzite. it has character and just a little veining. Quartzite (the natural one, not the composite) is the most durable of the lot, granite next, but you'll find lots of disagreement on that. The most important part of the search is to go to the stone yard, pick out the slab(s) you want take samples home, make sure the lighting in your kitchen is as it will be when you finish the remodel. Natural stone looks different on every one. A few examples here, but these are just photos and will look different everywhere. Can you move the downspout? **Q: Narrow Living Room: Furniture Layout** *(in Home Decorating)* Hello, Looking for some advice on furniture layout for this room. We just moved into this house (from an apartment) so we don't have much furniture, just wondering how you all would layout the room (please use your imagination). We are expecting a baby in a few months so we'd like the space to be capable of the following: 1\) Watching TV / Lounging 2\) Play area plus storage for toys 3\) Entryway (just a place to put keys, dog leash, etc.) We have a couch we like and an end table and short entryway storage piece, otherwise it is pretty much a blank slate. We also have an ikea sectional in the guest bedroom (converts to bed) that we could bring out as well. We are thinking to buy an accent chair or a chaise, some sort of short bench seating/storage, and then perhaps a behind-the-couch-table if the layout suits it. Note: mirrors and pictures on the floor as we don't want to put them up until we figure out how the furniture will be laid out. When you purchase lighting, the bulbs are the most important. You can purchase $15 pendants and/or spots, but put this brand of lighting in them, SORAA. They're amazing. Sectional is Ikea, so your sectional may fit this way. Imagine a mirror across from TV. That would make a great party, viewing on 2 walls. **Q: Moving laundry upstairs to a spare bedroom** *(in Laundry Room)* We’ll be moving our laundry upstairs to a spare bedroom and need ideas on how to use the space. It would be a huge laundry room if I don’t divide the room somehow. If I do create separate spaces, what can I do with a space that would then be too small for a bedroom? A: I created a design for a similar layout, and putting washer & dryer in closet requires much plumbing and exhausting. The price doubled before it was completed, because the contractor didn't factor in all of that. It turned out beautiful. I don't know exactly how your layout compares. Your photo floor plan doesn't have dimensions, and it's a mirror image on line, so all the words are backward. If you can give me dimensions, I'll be happy to help you out. The room in my client's home was one open space that I turned into a bedroom and media room. It was adjacent to the bathroom. The bathroom closet was not used, and we just flipped it to open on the media room side with custom made shutter doors. Here are a couple of layouts, closet, shutter doors & initial rendering of whole room. This is the dimensioning of the washer/dryer cabinet. Rendering of the entire area. 2 doors you see; one is into the bedroom and the front one into the bath. To the left side of the bathroom door is the washer/dryer closet (it's hidden behind the entry wall. This is final construction of the W/D cabinet. One side the stacked W/D, left side door has shelving inside. Right hand side door slides into the cabinet case. Left side does the same. **Q: Soapstone countertop with blue cabinets?** *(in Design Dilemma)* I am building a modern farmhouse. My kitchen will be a u-shape with an island. Photo shows area where kitchen will be under the loft. Wood beam ceiling, wood floors and black frame window. I plan to have butcher block for island countertop. I am thinking of cabinets in Benjamin Moore hale navy with brass hardware. I can’t decide on periphery countertop. Thinking a black granite or white quartz or soapstone (see options below). Leaning to the soapstone... any opinions/advice? please help! A: I love the photos of this project just as it is. Laura, it's so airy and tall. Just keep that look in your mind so that you can finish it without taking too much from that open feeling. On a project I did for a client a couple of years ago, she had a very strict budget. When we went looking for countertops, she was thinking white marble but the cost was beyond her budget. Long story short, she found an inexpensive granite that spoke to her even more than the marble. A friend of mine grew up in Lucca Italy and used marble in her California kitchen. That's what she grew up with, and everyone tried to talk her out of it, but I love marble, so I backed her up. Is it worth worrying about? my contractor said they could put a piece of smooth wood in the gap and then paint and caulk it in. It's a 1-inch gap down to 1/2 inch in some places. Caulk will crack overtime so initially my contractor was telling me I wouldn't want this option. has anyone else experienced this and if so what would you recommend? A: On second thought, the part that is 1" space would not work well with caulking. Ask the cabinet company for another solution.
