This turned out to be a challenge, because not many contractors are familiar with timber frame construction. The room had been damaged years ago when the home was abandoned. Some of the unique baseboards and floorboards had literally rotted away, then been covered over to hide the damage. Our backsplash is the same granite and makes the kitchen very dark, as our cupboards are Tasmanian Oak and I just don't like the look anymore, as I feel it dates the kitchen. I was just wondering, if it is possible to add tiled backsplash over the granite backsplash (My partner doesn't want to remove the granite backsplash which is frustrating) Thank you for the help :) A: I agree that the BEST way would be to remove the granite, but that could be a huge project. The biggest concern with going over the existing backsplash is getting the new tile to bond well. One of granites best features is the ease of cleaning the surface so getting something to stick to it may be difficult. You could experiment with a small area and a couple of new tile. The granite would need to be sanded with very coarse sandpaper to reduce the glaze. Go to a local tile supplier(where the pros go, not a big box!) and tell them what you're trying to accomplish. They will give you a tile adhesive that will PROBABLY work(no guarantee!) Let the new tile stick for a couple of days and try to pry one off. If it's fairly difficult, then this method might be ok. If it comes off easily you're in for a major demo project! Good Luck! **Q: What gets laid first, cabinets or tile?** *(in Design Dilemma)* I'm renovating an entire house. My designer says cabinets get installed first. My contractor says tile gets laid wall to wall and then cabinets get installed. My tile guy says tile is the last to go in. Internet is 50/50. Help!!! A: Your tile installer is correct. Most professional tile setters will spend a fair amount of time laying out the tile AFTER everything that affects the look of the floor is in place so you don't end up with little slivers of tile and out-of-balance grout joints. Another benefit to this approach is eliminating some potential damage to the new floor caused by cabinet, countertop etc. installations.
