**★ — Zarin Gollogly Design & Build, Dec. 2025**

> I’m a contractor for a project in San Francisco. My client purchased a very large amount of tile for multiple rooms in the house.
>
> The packaging/crating is the worst I have encountered from a tile company. They tell you to expect 10% breakage. Another 20% are so severely warped and out of flat they couldn’t be used. 30% had massive defects. It’s a mess. Wasteful. We installed 2/3 of one room and are out of acceptable tile, even after ordering 20% extra. 50-60% of what we ordered is either broken, severely warped, or has finish problems that are frankly amateurish. Zero quality control.
>
> So far, after numerous calls, emails, we have had zero response from them and zero effort to make this right. Our only recourse is to sue in small claims in Texas and we probably will.

**Comment from Rustico Tile & Stone:**

> Hello everyone!
> PSA for all Design Teams out there: Please allow us to help you with your clients.
>
> 95% of all post purchase issues arise when your end client doesn’t truly understand what Handmade Artisan Tile really means. The primary cause of this issue is when the account management team at Rustico is not allowed to speak to your client. We cannot overstate how important this brief call is. On the call we will explain all the small, but important details about what they are purchasing and therefore avoid so many concerns your client could come back to you about.
>
> Why we are held at arm’s length from clients can happen for several reasons. But the one I hear most often from design teams is their concern their clients will go around them directly to us, and therefore they will lose out on their commission. Please know we will never allow this to happen. We want to work with you time and time again, where we normally work with an end consumer once, maybe twice.
>
> So why is it so important to have that direct line of communication? Because if we don’t, you become the sales team for our product. The difference is, we have decades of experience selling our product, while most of you are being introduced to it for the first time. So even though we prepare you all as much as possible to explain the entire process to your client, and all about perfectly imperfect handmade artisan tiles. The information rarely gets passed on in a manner where the client truly understands and knows what to expect from their purchase.
>
> So, inevitably the tile shows up, and the end client is expecting something very different. They think the tile is going to be boxed, uniformed and perfect from tile to tile. Just like you would get at any big box tile store. What your client doesn't realize is they are coming to Rustico to get something completely different. When you pick up a single tile and look at it by itself you will see imperfections. The tile might not be exactly square or planed; the surface might have variations of color and texture depending on the drying and the firing process in the kiln. But your client is not expecting these variations. So, when they start grabbing each tile and trying to pick and choose the ones that match each other perfectly, they're negating the entire point of using this type of tile. This is when they come back to you and say only 50% of the tile is usable, but what they are really saying is “I only want to use 50% of the tile”.
>
> When the client is unaware of the process is when they come back to you for answers and to fix their issues. Then you turn to us and say our product is to blame. Unfortunately, since we were not allowed to assist you and explain what your client was buying, your client doesn’t realize the fault does not lie with the product, but in the understanding of what the product is.
>
> We are always willing to assist you in completing your project, (as we offered many times in this situation). But unfortunately, when you sign off on the purchase and therefore bear the responsibility of educating your client, we cannot be held accountable for the missteps of others.
>
> When all parties are aligned on the product and process, your client will understand that when they install the tile, and all the small individual imperfections blend seamlessly is when the single imperfect tile becomes the overall perfect result.
>
> Sincerely,
> The Rustico and Tile team

> Rustico tile did a great job from start to finish. They are very knowledgeable, friendly and helpful. They give you all the information you need to install and care for your Saltillo Tile. After reading some reviews, I was worried some tiles would arrive damaged, but our tile arrived in perfect condition! We had maybe one tile that was cracked during transport. You could tell they packaged it well and were careful. The tile itself is beautiful and exactly what I was looking for. I definitely recommend Rustico Tile and would order again!

**Comment from Rustico Tile & Stone:**

> Thank you so much for the kind words and thoughtful review! We're thrilled to hear that your Saltillo tile arrived in great condition and that you're happy with both the product and the experience. Our team works hard to provide helpful guidance and careful packaging, so it's incredibly rewarding to know that made a difference. We truly appreciate your recommendation and would love to work with you again on any future projects. Enjoy your beautiful new floors! We love to see project photos is you would like to share with us!

**★ — Tropicalia, Dec. 2024**

> We purchased $2,700 in Traditional Saltillo tiles this fall from Rustico Tile and Stone for our new home. Upon delivery, we were disappointed to find that two-thirds of the tiles had black smudges and marks beneath the sealant, making them look permanently dirty and unusable. These issues were not disclosed in the product descriptions or marketing materials, which only mentioned terracotta colors.
>
> Our signed contract stated: \*"Traditional Saltillo tile has many color variations ranging from dark orange, red, yellow, and light pink."\* We agreed to this, but the tiles we received contained black and gray discolorations that were not mentioned. Out of 570 tiles, only 225–230 were usable, forcing us to change plans, incur extra costs, and delay our project.
>
> When we contacted Rustico, they dismissed our concerns, stating "black swirls are common," despite this not being disclosed. They refused to offer a refund or resolution. We are extremely disappointed with the product quality and customer service. Based on this experience, I cannot recommend Rustico Tile and Stone.

**★ — HU-120114919, Sept. 2021**

> Stay away! I ordered and paid for a sample of red Saltillo tiles and then ordered 1100 tiles based on the sample from them for delivery in California. The tiles I received were completely different than the sample. The sample's color was baked in while the actual delivered tiles were clearly painted red. The tiles have a manufacturing defect with blisters and are peeling. Customer support gave me the run around telling me it is natural for the tiles to have one or two small holes. Look at the pictures below, the holes are not small and the tiles have multiple blisters. Beware they don't offer any guarantees and you are completely at risk. Here are the tell signs that you will be stuck with a $5000 loss like I am: 1) You have to pay in cash or direct bank deposit so no chance to get your credit card company to help with issues 2) They make you sign a contract requiring all damages need to be reported at delivery - who can check 1100 tiles at delivery??? 3) if you want to bring legal action against them the contract states it has to be done in their local county - so if you don't live there you will have to travel to TX for any court appearances. 4) Contract does not provide any guarantees on product quality. In short if you want to be 100% at risk with almost no recourse this is the place for you. Otherwise go to a company that accepts credit cards, have a reasonable return policy and don't make you sign a unreasonable contract that gives you no protections. They make a big deal of customer support on their website but it is non-existent if you have an issue. S

> I cannot express how wonderful it has been to work with the staff at Rustico Tile and Stone. Our first experience working with them was in 2013 while trying to repair our home after Hurricane Sandy damage. Several tiles in our kitchen floor had cracked due to the flooding. We were unable to find any octagon terra cotta tiles here on Long Island. I googled them on line and contacted Rustico Tile. They were so helpful and helped us get the few tiles we needed to repair our floor.
> Fast forward to 2015, we began raising our home and adding an addition to our kitchen. Knowing we could not fine the flooring to match, we went directly to Rustico. Melanie and Shelley were so helpful and patient with our concerns and questions. Our tiles arrived today. They are perfect! We cannot wait to see them installed. A heart felt thank you goes out to Rustico Tile and Stone.

> Working with Rustico tile was a great experience! Very friendly, helpful and knowledgeable staff. Very happy with the product as well, will definitely use them again.

**★★★★★ — Maureen Mahon, April 2016**

> Working with Rustico is an absolute pleasure! I was working on a tight deadline and contacted Rustico on a Thursday afternoon, right before Easter weekend (Rustico was going to be closed on Good Friday). Kathy jumped into action to make sure our order was placed in time for FedEx - otherwise we would have had to wait until Tuesday of the next week for our samples to be shipped out. Melanie immediately followed up to make sure we were taken care of, and continued to check in with us along the process. It's a family business that is run with the kind of customer service you don't always find these days and as a professional in the design trade, I really appreciate it. Also, their products are beautiful. The cement tiles I was using are not commonly found and I'm happy to have a source like Rustico to rely on.

**★★★★★ — Jodi Hallsten, March 2014**

> Outstanding, outstanding, outstanding!
> My experience with Rustico was top-notch. They were helpful, informative, and made the ordering process super easy. Moreover, their communication with me was ongoing and thorough - I never wondered what was going on with my order at any time in the process. I strongly recommend this company to anyone needing their products. I will definitely order from them again!

**Comment from User:**

> Thanks for the kind words, Jodi! We can't wait to see photos of your floor when it's all installed! :) Blessings - the Rustico team

> I am very pleased with my interactions with Rustico Tile and Stone. Everyone I dealt with was very professional while still being very personal. I felt like I was their most important customer. Everything they stated was carried out as they said and they went beyond my expectations to make sure an item shipped okay during our bad winter weather. I’m very happy with the company’s service, product and personnel!

> We recently relocated from New Mexico to wild Wyoming. We bought a "rustic" A-frame with a lot of carpet, even the kitchen.Right away we knew that we wanted Saltillo Tile.I was really surprised to find it very hard to get it.EBAY to the rescue!! I contacted Rustico through EBAY and was very lucky to get in touch with Tiffany, who proved to be a real gem.She responded with an estimate and took awesome care of the whole transaction.Shipping went quick, broken pieces were few,and through live tracking we were always informed where the tile were. The shipment made it here and the tile looks absolutely beautiful! Big thumbs up for the way business should be.3 stars for Tiffany!!

**★★★★★ — Liza Shirey, Jan. 2014**

> As part of a recent whole house renovation and addition, we ordered Saltillo tile from Rustco for our kitchen and laundry. I always knew I wanted Saltillo tile, but in our part of the South it is not available. After purchasing, bringing home, and subsequently returning another tile we only moderately liked (from a local big box), we decided to take the chance of ordering Saltillo online to get what we really wanted.
>
> From the beginning Rustico went above and beyond. They delivered
> exactly what they said they would, in the time they committed to, and for the price agreed to. It is beautiful and we got exactly what we dreamed of. Customer service was outstanding and everyone I spoke with was courteous and knew their product in detail. I'm comfortable recommending them wholeheartedly.

**★★★★★ — nanbunce, Dec. 2013**

> We purchased 850 square feet of Saltillo tile from Rustico. We dealt with
> Tiffany, who responded quickly with references in the Denver area. We
> talked with two of the referees, and they were very happy with their orders and
> service. That convinced us, and we ordered the tile. The tile arrived in
> two crates which we unloaded onto a street parking area from the truck. (Each crate weighed about 2500 pounds.)
> This was difficult because we live on a slope. But it was ok. (We were
> warned about avoiding a slope...) We then set up a supply line to get
> it up our driveway, ready for the installers. This was the most difficult
> step, but it was all worth it. The tile is now installed and is beautiful.
> And the cost was half of local quotes, with tile with a beautiful range
> of colors from red to yellow. Breakage from the trucking was about
> 5-10%, and we had ordered 15% more on their advice.

**Comment from User:**

> We're happy that you're happy, Nan!! The overage of 15% will cover all of your waste, cuts, and border so use what you can accordingly. We'd love to see photos when it's all finished!! Merry Christmas!
