**Q: Removing Olympic RESCUE-IT! resurfacer** *(in Porches & Decks)*

I used this on my deck several years ago:

It really worked well to hide the flaws from the crappy wood I'd bought from Lowes! To make it all match, I used a lighter color on the deck board floor, and a darker color on the 4x4 posts.

A guy dropped a tree on my house last year (long story) and broke several of the deck boards, which his insurance is covering so I'm replacing all of the deck boards. I'd really like to use semi-transparent stay on them, though, instead of this thick resurfacer.

The question is about the 4x4 posts.

Can you suggest a way to strip this resurfacer so that I can stain the 4x4s with a dark semi-transparent?

I could replace them for about $400, but doing so would require digging up a lot of plants. And I know that the contractor would destroy a lot of my garden in the process. So I'd really like to find a way to redo them myself if at all possible.

A: Hey Jason,

This is an easy solution, and one you can easily do yourself !  Since the product you used is acrylic/latex based, sand all your 4 X 4 posts down to bare with an orbital sander. If they're super rough/beat start with  60 grit, then 120 to finish/smooth out. Remember to always sand with the grain. For those harder to reach spots and sharp corners, pick up a Dremel multi max tool for $ 100 at your local hardware store.. This way you can be more sensitive in your garden vs the Godzilla approach most contractors sadly use.

You're smart to switch products, for horizontal exterior wood decks I would NEVER  use any latex based solid color products, as this will result in  failure every time in snowy climates. Semi trans oil only, or upgrade the deck to to one of the plethora of composite materials available now, no staining/sanding ever again...Enjoy the new deck !

**Q: Exterior stain for cedar siding** *(in Paint)*

We built our home about five years ago. We used smooth cedar siding with a semi-transparent stain to expose the look of the cedar boards. Since then, I have re-stained the wood once and twice in a few spots. Each time the stain lasts maybe 3-6 months before we get black streak marks from dirt and rain running down the boards and from the dirt that collects in the channel of each board. I've used oil based from Duckback and Armstrong Clark stains. 

I want the stain to last longer and not get as dirty as quickly if possible. Any suggestions for better stains, techniques, or sealers I might use that will extend the life and appearance?

Attached are photos of when it was first stained and then later on for reference.

A: Being located in Canada, I've never heard of the oil brands you've used previously, although the 6 month time frame  description of your products performance sounds just about right for exterior semi trans oil. I've used the  Sherwin Williams version of this product extensively over the years. My last house had a  hottub deck that needed constant snow shovelling & would consume  10 gallons of semi trans oil every fall for maintenance. I would  only ever use semi trans oil for properly prepared clients exterior lumber decks, and nothing  else due to product limitations.   In the world of ski resort homes I've been using Sikkens Cetol 1 for over two decades on multiple wood species with great results  ( \*Side note, never top with Cetol 2/3 or any other clear coat)   I have large timbers on my own home, that on average  I recoat with one coat of Cetol 1  every 3-5 years, depending on exposure. Sure the product costs are  higher than a semi trans oil, but then so are the benefits.... 
A couple points  to keep in mind;  smooth cedar siding  installed horizontally instead of vertically will unfortunately be more prone to marking/future water stains & trapping dirt  etc. mainly due to that flat exposed edge profile. Smooth wood  will always discolor/dry out/mark faster than the equivalent siding in a rough/er finish & require higher upkeep. Another factor to consider is the cedar sidings  substrate.  Over the years I've definitely noticed product life discrepancies/variations depending on the sidings  backing and perhaps more critically,  how it was installed. Air movement is your friend.... Either way, good luck whichever road you take with this !

**Q: debating doing an Accent Wall ?** *(in Design Dilemma)*

Would appreciate any feedback you have on doing an accent/feature wall or paneling here above the stair case

A: Such a narrow vertical spot, I'd say no. Not sure I understood the need for panelling, is this due to  small children or animals destroying this particular areas drywall ?  
Personally I'd just paint the whole thing some form of white color & call it a day. If you're looking to add some "pop", installing even a small skylight would do wonders.... Whatever you end up choosing for this tiny spot,  make sure it's a light/er color, as the staircase already looks darker than a dungeon ;)    Good luck !

**Q: Why is the quartz seam by the sink so much more noticeable?** *(in Design Dilemma)*

just installed. I’m concerned about dirt/debris accumulation. is it the sealing that was done more poorly on the seam by the sink? Should I ask for it to be touched up?

A: Sorry to see this sort of sloppy  work still being done. Whenever ordering any stone countertops for a client,  the smart contractor tells the fabricators that any joints made in or around the sink will result in an automatic no payment clause. Completely un practical for cleaning, water/oil/s penetration etc not to mention structural issues on some types of stone.... At this point if you're keeping as is, all I could recommend is at minimum  have a bottle of your chosen  sealer and reapply regularly. Additionally,  make sure your window to countertop joint is completely waterproofed with whatever finishing you plan on.
Also, just quickly looking at the first pic, no room for a quartz backsplash, countertop almost to the same height as the wooden? window, water on the window from dish washing will be interesting, no thoughts of practicality ....poor planning. Not hating on your kitchen, just pointing out some basic mistakes as someone who's built many of them.. Good luck & enjoy the new space !

**Q: Marble Fireplace Help** *(in Design Dilemma)*

We just did a renovation but haven't finished our fireplace yet. I would love any help. Should I paint the inside black? Should I put on fireplace doors? I have tried to clean the marble around the fireplace but haven't had luck yet so I don't think a screen would work.

A: If you do  paint the inside firebricks with a black color, please make sure it's with a special  high temperature paint.... otherwise when you make your first fire, you'll get a nasty surprise !

**Q: Pros/Cons of using 2CM quartz slab in shower** *(in Remodeling)*

Researching installing 2CM quartz slab on shower walls and bathroom counter.  Does any have experience installing 2cm on shower walls and if so what were the pros/cons of doing so. Did the walls need to be reinforced due to the extra weight of the 2cmm (3/4” of 20MM).  Thank you in advance for your input.

A: Hello HU,  off the top of my head...  full stone slabs have been considered normal practice in the higher end building industry for many years now.  Having previously installed full slabs of granite/quartz/rugged sandstone/semi precious stones etc in clients  showers before,  I'd tell you to definitely consult your building plan and/or a structural engineer if you're uncertain...Some showers slabs can be 12 feet long & when stacked on top of each other can weigh half a ton. Most of the stone slabs I've used in showers were 1" to 1.5 " thick. Since you didn't mention any dimensions, we can only speculate...Your walls need to be built solid & your shower base level, but the reinforcing should all be done mainly in the floor below....don't forget, the walls holds almost none of the  weight, it's all in the floors. If you have another story/s below, typically a new structural beam or beefing up  in the ceiling below is in your future. If you're on slab, cutting it, tying in additional rebars & repouring, or whatever your structural  engineer wants to see in order to stamp & pass  it. Additionally, the plumbing must be done PROPERLY  & pretested, there's no going back once that slab goes on. A couple of positives are a complete minimum amount of grout/joint lines, as well as an no sealing slabs, as this is pre done during fabrication. Still, I'd advise you to pick your stone carefully, as some cosmetic choices can become  a long term disaster in regards to practicality, cleanliness etc. This is mainly due to porosity issues.  Lastly, If you're using a very light natural stone or semi precious & want lighting to illuminate from behind, please be aware of using only very specific mortars for this effect to work.
