- [Old Yacht Club](https://www.houzz.com/hznb/projects/old-yacht-club-pj-vj~7385189)
 - Location: Blue Hill, ME
 - Photos: 28
 - Description: An abandoned Yacht Club, poised at the edge of the bay, sat derelict for years, all while bearing witness to the relentless coastal climate of Maine. Built in 1919, it endured a series of interventions after the Club relocated in 1946. It would require the right temperament and commitment to restore its historical memory while modernizing the early 20th-century structure. After the foundation was reinforced and repointed, a new wood and steel superstructure was erected above. Inside this shell,…
- [House on a Bay](https://www.houzz.com/hznb/projects/house-on-a-bay-pj-vj~7385097)
 - Location: Southport, ME
 - Photos: 17
 - Description: The conceptual design for this project was born of a desire to reconcile and make evident different levels that exist naturally on the site. In this process the public programmatic elements were placed on the ground while the private elements of the building were elevated above the site, disengaging the earth below and engendering a sense of privacy. One end of the cantilevered bar was placed against the edge of a stone escarpment and rotated towards the easterly horizon of the Atlantic Ocean. T…
- [House in Town II](https://www.houzz.com/hznb/projects/house-in-town-ii-pj-vj~7385093)
 - Location: Castine, ME
 - Photos: 17
 - Description: This is the second phase of a renovation initially completed in 2012. Phase two came about several years later and involved converting the cramped attic into an office and sleeping area. This would entail new vertical circulation and modifications to the hall and bath below. Disengaging circulation from the second-floor bath, a new steel and wood stair was inserted into the hallway providing a simple direct connection between the two floors. Skylights above the stair lure light down into the sec…
- [House on a Wharf](https://www.houzz.com/hznb/projects/house-on-a-wharf-pj-vj~7384675)
 - Location: Brooksville, ME
 - Photos: 15
 - Description: This new residence on a small coastal harbor occupies roughly the same footprint as the original building which had stood since the early 20th century. The old structure had many uses over the years. In addition to servicing the steamers arriving along the coast, it at various times functioned as an apartment house, a laundromat, and a summer home. To shore up the site the stone wharf has been raised and the new house is placed on piers to comply with floodplain regulations, elevating the struct…
- [Pavilion in a Quarry](https://www.houzz.com/hznb/projects/pavilion-in-a-quarry-pj-vj~7384664)
 - Location: Brooksville, ME
 - Photos: 18
 - Description: Set in an abandoned stone quarry, this project afforded the opportunity to design both architecture and landscape in an unparalleled setting. Last excavated in the 1930’s, the site had grown derelict; a series of forsaken craters filled with loose mounds of stone, rubble, and the detritus from decades of neglect. As the site was cleared and stone stacked upon stone in towering piles, depressions in the ledge presented themselves, which we utilized to create a series of naturalized ponds. Two lar…
- [Apartment in a Tower](https://www.houzz.com/hznb/projects/apartment-in-a-tower-pj-vj~7384653)
 - Location: New York, NY
 - Photos: 19
 - Description: 56 Leonard Street, commonly referred to as the “Jenga” building, presented a unique opportunity to modify an apartment unit during construction. While the clients wished to retain a number of the base building’s components, they sought a solution that was more open, flexible, and adaptable to their art and lifestyle. The intervention seeks to clarify the architectural moves by distilling walls, doors, and ceilings into elemental planes and volumes. Designed to be an invisible framework, large sl…

 - Location: Not specified
 - Photos: 15
 - Description: This project stems from a desire to understand and work within the context of site conditions and constraints, both externally applied and self-imposed. There were setbacks and view easements driven by local ordinances, a beautifully cross-grained terrain, site textures – meadow, woods, ledge – and excellent views. Adjacent to a busy local navigation channel, there is always a flurry of activity from which the site affords an extraordinary vantage point. When the owners purchased the property, t…

 - Description: Simple volumes and walls contain the edge of the woods and present a long panoramic view across the field to the islands of the Maine coast. Volumetrically, the house draws from vernacular and agricultural building forms and materials. Because of the narrow lot and neighboring residences in close proximity, the programmatic elements were divided and arranged to focus views and create privacy.

 - Description: This design for a year-round retirement home addresses all aspects of the site, which resides on the western flank of Blue Hill Bay and has easterly water views framed by a mature forest of oak, birch, and fir. The use of natural materials, featuring wood in all aspects, was an important way to tie the building to its site and its cultural context. Photo by Brian Vanden Brink

## Community Q&A

**Q: Who made the fabulous vanity?** *(in Photo Questions)*

I'd love to find one like it!

A: Thanks!

**Q: ceiling height?** *(in Photo Questions)*

Whats the ceiling height in this room? and what's the wood on the cabinets? gorgeous!

A: The ceiling height ranges from 9'-11" at the low end to 13'-8" at the high end. The cabinetry is made from maple-veneered plywood. And thanks!

**Q: Does the coffee table conceal a TV? If so, where do you source?** *(in Photo Questions)*

A: The table does conceal a TV and was custom designed by us. The tabletop flips up and the TV is mounted on the bottom side of the top. Cable box and DVD player are inside.

**Q: Underside sheathing/insulation?** *(in Photo Questions)*

First, this is a lovely design. Second, I'm curious about how the underside is insulated and sheathed to cope with moisture and cold or is this only a summer place? Thanks, Sidney

A: Thank you! This is designed to be a year-round house and the underside is insulated with a closed cell spray-foam fully encapsulating all structure and plumbing lines. This is then covered with removable cementitious panels applied to the underside. The walls and roof are spray-foamed as well and the windows and doors all utilize triple-glazing.

**Q: Curious about the soffit** *(in Photo Questions)*

I was wondering about the shallow eaves and having no gutter - especially over the deck area. I'm designing a cottage (at least trying to as an LA!) and would like to do a similar detail. Doesn't the dripping adversely impact the deck? Any issues with water impacting windows/doors?

A: The deck is made of ipe which is a highly durable and rot-resistant wood. Once it grayed out, which took about 6 months, the water runoff ceased to have any impact on the deck aesthetically. It drains through and does not cause discoloration. The windows and doors are all carefully flashed and protected; we've had no issues with them. To maintain their natural color requires biannual maintenance, but this is essentially finish work. Hope that helps. Good luck!

**Q: WHAT IS THE MAKE AND MODEL OF THE CEILING LIGHT FIXTURE?** *(in Photo Questions)*

HELLO, WHAT IS THE MAKE AND MODEL OF THE CEILING LIGHT FIXTURE IN THE FOYER? THANKS

A: The bench is supported by a concealed steel structure that ties into the wall studs. The wood then sits on top of the steel outriggers.
