If you're shopping for the lowest price, shotgunning an online design packet to a bunch of companies is a decent approach. **Q: Brick pavers deteriorated** *(in Landscape Design)* Hi, I have a 1998-built house, and my brick paver walkway has deteriorated quite a bit (See attached pictures). Would you recommend reusing the existing brick pavers, getting new ones, or perhaps exploring alternative options for upgrading the walkway? Open to suggestions! Thank you! A: I installed those sort of 4x8 pavers back in the 90s. That's not what they looked like back then, but that is what pavers from the 90s look like now because the manufacturing processes weren't as good as they are now and the aggregate becomes exposed from wear and environmental factors. But hey, I've only been doing this for 30+ years so I guess I don't know jack. **Q: Concrete vs Granite pavers vs Concrete Pavers** *(in Polls)* We are building a new custom in Arizona. We are importing granite tiles and marble for indoor flooring and granite countertops. We are also thinking if we should get granite pavers for our driveway and patio. The builder's contract gives a poured concrete driveway and patio. Alternatively, we can do concrete pavers. Now we are thinking if we should get granite pavers. It will be more expensive, but we are still considering it. Our builder suggests that we get at least 5cm thick granite pavers. Those pavers will be too heavy as they exceed the weight limits for the shipping container. The granite supplier says that most of their customers order 4cm thick pavers. Would 4cm think granite pavers be good enough for driveways where cars drive on it? We could instead get 5cm thick pavers for the driveway and 3 cm thick pavers for the patios where it will be only pedestrian traffic. Would 3cm be too thin for a patio paver? What do you suggest? A: James Overton where are you finding porcelain pavers that are rated for vehicular traffic? **Q: Starting out/landscape design** *(in Landscape Design)* I'm one final project away from graduating from a landscape design program I enrolled into online. For a 'career diploma.' This final project is basically a first design sort of project with set dimensions and client brief. During the course of the project I'm finding that I really enjoy the process. Was looking for tips or any pointers you have for someone starting out. As far as developing the craft itself. Not looking for career changing life advice and how to start and manage a small business and the many pitfalls of the industry. I'm simply interested in being able to make more thoughtful and engaging designs. A: Best advice I can give? Be humble and willing to learn. It's easy to feel great about what you're doing even early on, because it \*is\* likely better than what anyone else you know is capable of. Odds are though, it could still be better. I was always a pretty decent designer, and then I got a job with a design-build working under people with 30 years of experience. The difference in my work before that job and after is night and day. You didn't say if you did the program to get into the industry or just to get better at something you enjoy, but either way - never stop learning! **Q: stone quandary** *(in Landscape Design)* This new stone entrance to my front at the bottom of my steps was installed when we were out of town, and it’s my fault bc I hastily picked the stone color through photos, but it doesn’t match the bricks. It matches the rest of the house nicely, but not the bricks. The bricks are deep red/purplish, and the stone are a light rusty orange. I could leave it as is, paint the steps, or redo the area with new stones. None of those seem like great options. It would obviously be costly to redo it. Painting the bricks I guess is an option, but the same brick is on the lower 1/4 of the house. (The remainder of house is hardi plank and is a creme color that matches the stone). So would have to do a lot of painting. Or do nothing, but we’re not thinking it looks good now. I would love to hear any comments/suggestions, thank you! A: Why are the stone pieces so small? It looks like scrap from another job and all that mortar is an opportunity for failure. **Q: anyone have any experience with shadeFX?** *(in Landscape Design)* Will build our own pergola in SoCal. Contractor was suggesting Roman shades but came across shadeFX as it is weatherproof - anyone have any experience with them? Presume it is expensive but hoping the quality is good. A: The project was 12-14 years ago so I have no idea what the cost was, but it was only a little more expensive than the systems that didn't offer rain protection.
