> Susan Cohan Gardens brought our vision for a unique, yet functional outdoor entertaining space to life in a way we could never have imagined. Susan’s original ideas, good taste and smart design inspired us to hire her for our next outdoor project. Susan Cohan is a true professional, creative, timely and true to her word. We were lucky to be referred to her.

**★★★★★ — Irene Maroney, Nov. 2020**

> I worked with Susan Cohan about 10 years ago on a smaller project when we lived in our first home. When we moved to our current home last year, I knew to call her right away! She recognized immediately the challenge she faced working on our property but took it on, designing a landscaping plan that met our needs - simple, classic, low maintenance, safe and maximizing the views we have. We love the final outcome!
>
> Susan remained involved throughout the entire year-long process. She coordinated the bidding of various aspects of the project. Each contractor hired was extremely professional and provided excellent service, a testament to her good judgment. Susan is transparent and honest, and I trusted her every step of the way.

**Comment from SCG Studio:**

> Thank you Irene. It was a pleasure to create a beautiful, functional space for you and Claudio!

**★★★★★ — ryan\_clayton49, Sept. 2019**

> After seeing Susan's work on Houzz I decided to contact her for an interview and initial consultation to discuss a complete replacement of the hardscaping and landscaping at my home. I met with several other potential designers and design/build contractors, and I knew following our first meeting that Susan was the right fit for me. I hired her to perform design and project management services. Susan prepared design documents for my review and approval and then met with potential contractors to discuss scope and pricing. Ultimately, she helped me select a highly qualified and professional contractor to execute the work. Susan had a sense of urgency surrounding my project that was unmatched by any previous professional that I've hired for work at my home over the past few years. She actively managed the contractor and ultimately delivered a beautiful finished product that exceeded my expectations. She gets my highest recommendations.

**★★★★★ — User, Dec. 2017**

> Susan designed a beautiful garden for my front yard. I can't wait to see it again in the spring. Her team was professional and hard-working. I couldn't be happier with the results.

**Comment from SCG Studio:**

> It’s always a pleasure working with you. Thank you for the opportunity...again!

**★★★★★ — kfschaumburg, Dec. 2017**

> My husband and I were working on a nightmare of a project for almost 3 years. After we were sure the project would never be started, Susan entered - and how lucky we are for that! Susan took all of our ideas and turned them into reality. Her attention to detail, ability to give us what we want, all whilst staying on track is amazing. Her eye and classic taste are just two of the things which make her so easy to work with. While we are very happy the project is finished, we would work with Susan again.

**Comment from SCG Studio:**

> Thank you for trusting me with such a fantastic project!

**★★★★★ — Nancy Kildal-Brandt, Jan. 2017**

> We had a great experience working with Susan. She is very knowledgeable, professional and creative. We're really pleased with how our project turned out.

**★★★★★ — ny2france, May 2015**

> After a life spent in NYC, my wife and I decided to seek a different kind of life: one spent in an historic house with a sizable piece of property that we could make our own. We knew we needed the help of a professional to pull the outdoor space together for us. We had certain "must-haves" in mind: a big brick patio, perennial gardens, a fence to keep the deer out and to afford some privacy, and a deck that would integrate a hot tub spa. And we wanted to ensure that all of these needs would be met with great taste and with respect to the architecture of not only our house but of our neighborhood. Susan was wonderful and totally understood. She has exquisite taste and created a plan for us that incorporated all of these elements beautifully. She is communicative, helpful, friendly. At the same time she is not afraid to tell you what would not work and why. We highly recommend her.

**Comment from SCG Studio:**

> Thank you! You are a pleasure to work with. I love people who give me a list and let me run with it like you did.

**★★★★★ — ashleydevlin, May 2015**

> Susan Cohan completely transformed our front and backyard into an outdoor oasis. Her design exceeded anything we could have imagined and the flow between the bluestone patio, pool area and children play space is perfect. The trees, plants and vegetation she chose was specific to our taste and matches our personalities to a tee! She not only is extremely professional and diligent, but a delight to work with as well. We would highly recommend Susan to anyone.

**Comment from SCG Studio:**

> Wow, thank you! The delight to work with door swings both ways!

**★★★★★ — Sarah Jacobstein, Dec. 2014**

> After an extensive search for the right landscape architect, we stumbled upon Susan's beautiful website. Within 5 minutes of meeting her, we knew that our search was over. Susan is efficient, frank and extremely knowledgeable. She listened to us and our needs and then helped us to imagine what our yard could be. She is extremely creative but utterly practical at the same time. For example, she designed a natural play area for our kids with stumps cut from one of the trees that we had taken down and rocks moved from other parts of the yard. She recommended a great contractor, worked hard to make sure the project started and finished on time, and provided good advice when challenges arose during the construction. We love our new yard and would recommend Susan to anyone!

**★★★★★ — NatureScape Lighting, Sept. 2014**

> I have had the pleasure of knowing and working with Susan for ten years. We have collaborated on countless projects, both for private clients as well as in philanthropic ventures. I am continually amazed by the way Susan is able to visualize the future outcome, often with more clarity than the client had imagined. I have often recommended my own clients to Susan. She truly has a gift.

**★★★★★ — swbradley, May 2014**

> Spring has sprung and once again i am delighted in the pleasure of my well landscaped yard that Susan Cohan helped me create. It's perfect and i could not have done it without her. She was attentive to my ideas and brought them to reality.

**Comment from SCG Studio:**

> It has been my pleasure. A difficult corner hillside lot has, over the years been turned into a lush deer resistant woodland!,

**★★★★ — Susan Gardiner, May 2014**

> Worked with Susan 7 years ago to create a new backyard landscape. She created a very warm and private garden environment for us to relax and enjoy.
> Hired her again in April 2014 to design a new deck/patio and landscape . Very pleased with past results and eagerly anticipating the work to be done for the new project based on designs submitted to date.
> Susan has a real gift for working to create exactly what is needed for the client.
> I highly recommend her work.

**Comment from SCG Studio:**

> Thank you so much Susan. I've enjoyed working with you.

**★★★★★ — enpost, Sept. 2013**

> Susan designed a beautiful hardscape and landscape (patio and pathway) several years ago. This summer she designed an additional patio area close to our kitchen so that we could enjoy eating outside in a more convenient way. Susan is a pleasure to work with. She is creative and imaginative and at the same time she listens to our practical concerns and needs. The new patio area beautifully compliments the natural setting. She is extremely budget conscious and works exactly in the parameters discussed. During the entire process she worked quickly, efficiently and was always available for questions.

**★★★★ — jessadavis, Sept. 2013**

> Susan did a great job working in my budget for an overall landscape plan and deck concept. She did several iterations of our deck plan based on various requirements by our zoning board and variance needs. She then recommended screening plantings when we were required to plant 12' high hedges next to the deck. Overall I am very satisfied with her work and how flexible she was.

**Comment from SCG Studio:**

> I also completed a conceptual landscape plan for the entire property that Jessica is interpreting on her own. There were many iterations of a deck that has since been built to satisfy zoning and the limited footprint that was allowed by the town. It was not an easy project.

**★★★★★ — rbloom62, May 2013**

> Susan Cohan is knowledgable, creative, and very talented! She understands her customers needs and intuitively understands and interprets the tastes/needs/wants of her clients very quickly! She is a professional and we will continue to work with her!

**★★★★★ — rmvbee, May 2013**

> Susan is the designer for folks who are reluctant to hire a designer for fear of: lofty attitudes, impractical design and sky-high budgetary expectations. Working with Susan is one of the best things we have ever done for our home and has proved to be a very wise use of our hard earned salaries in terms of preventing design errors, wasted do-it-yourself efforts and inappropriate plantings. Her advice is always forthright and has a clear point-of-view.
>
> She combines design/color creativity with an eye toward real-world use with schemes that are family and pet friendly. Unlike many professionals, there is an eagerness to take a long term and holistic view of projects and is more than happy to work with the client so that an otherwise unaffordable, large plan may be broken up over a number of years into manageable clusters. In other words, you know she will not disappear after the check is cashed!
>
> For our home, Susan has already redesigned our very tired, 1960's foundation plantings and has created a "courtyard" in our side yard--effectively creating an outdoor living room--replete with beautiful, colorful, and nearly maintenance-free, greenery. During that chunk of work last year, Susan was always very responsive and available by phone, email, or old-fashioned house-calls to tweak and help manage multiple contractors. She checked and rechecked progress and then checked and rechecked to insure our satisfaction with quality and the ever-strained budget.
>
> We're currently working on the next phase of design for a Westie-friendly back yard which has multiple must-haves: beauty, low maintenance, safety, privacy, a water feature, the ability to plant herbs, veggies and perennials--and of course--cook, eat and just lie around. By the way, this is a 1960's ranch style home in a nice suburb we're talking about here, not some mega-mansion with expansive grounds (although she has done those, too). Anyhow, it's a tall order, but we've got the plan designs and, once again, she has nailed it! That should say something about the versatility and depth of her imagination and experience.
>
> There is absolutely no hesitation here in highly recommending Susan Cohan. She is truly worthy of repeat business.

**Comment from SCG Studio:**

> Thank you so much for this review. I have had so much fun working on these projects for the past two years...and the dogs love them too!

**★★★★★ — shery19, April 2013**

> I have the highest regard for Susan's work. She designed the landscaping for my home twice. The first time was when we renovated our home and she did a beautiful job designing and installing our English garden look, complete with arbors, rose garden, winding paths and a stone patio. She again came to our rescue when we renovated an addition on the house and needed to continue the plan.
>
> Susan is easy to work with, listens and accommodating. She took us from design plan to finished product and continues to assist us with updates and changes as needed. She has a wonderful eye for design and her design is not run of the mill. You won't be sorry with her work.

**★★★★★ — bpolise, March 2013**

> Susan was instrumental in getting our pool project and landscaping for the pool in on time . she coordinated the plant and tree arrangements and recommended a lighting designer to provide a complete project. She is always professional and I would recommend her on any project.

**★★★★★ — elaina7, March 2013**

> Susan did a number of landscape jobs for me and I could not be happier. She reached all my goals and the landscaping around my home is wonderful.

**★★★★★ — cdimassimo, Feb. 2013**

> Susan Cohan and her team designed and installed our backyard patio and perennial gardens. The work included building a wall and a fountain. They were very professional and a real pleasure to work with. We couldn't be happier with Susan's vision and execution on our project.

**★★★★★ — susancartun, Feb. 2013**

> Susan did a great job redesigning the landscaping and entrance to the front of our home. Her new layout for the front walkway is brilliant. Her choice of materials for the deck railing and paving are superb. The shrubs and plants are lovely. We particularly like that they bloom at different times of the year.

**Comment from SCG Studio:**

> Thank you so much for the great words, it was a pleasure to re-think your front entry.

 - Location: New Vernon, NJ
 - Photos: 14
 - Description: This garden is the recipient of a 2015 Gold Award for planting design from the Association of Professional Landscape Designers. The 7800 square foot garden was built in the 1920s when the 15 acre property had a working greenhouse and two full-time gardeners. By 2007, the bones of that garden remained: stonework in disrepair, heaved brick walks, and a leaky concrete pond. The homeowners wanted to re-imagine it in the spirit of the original, but with lower maintenance and an eye towards family use…

 - Location: Essex Fells, NJ

- [Alan Road](https://www.houzz.com/hznb/projects/alan-road-pj-vj~1171050)
 - Location: Short Hills, NJ
 - Photos: 13
 - Description: A twenty-five year old landscape received a face lift with new areas added, gardens reinvigorated and older ones that remain re-imagined for a young family. The home has a steep hill both front and back so creative solutions had to be made to accommodate entertaining and outdoor living space as well as an existing pool. Traditional elements were updated with contemporary styling and details. Plants are easy care and chosen to maximize four seasons of interest.
- [An Art Filled Courtyard Garden](https://www.houzz.com/hznb/projects/an-art-filled-courtyard-garden-pj-vj~2554556)
 - Location: Morristown, NJ
 - Photos: 6
 - Description: An art filled small courtyard garden. The narrow walled space is divided into three areas - a perennial garden, a cloud pruned boxwood allee and a seating area with a fire pit and large out door painting. Custom oak furniture, steel sculpture and carefully considered plantings make the garden a serene place.
- [Gravel Courtyard](https://www.houzz.com/hznb/projects/gravel-courtyard-pj-vj~75938)
 - Location: Rumson, NJ
 - Photos: 5
 - Description: A formal and traditional gravel patio with a central bluestone patio for dining and surrounded by low boxwood hedges was created to become a transitional space. The garden is located in a niche between a loggia and a sunroom and leads out to a walk from a larger raised patio. This outdoor room needed to work from both interior vieww as well as being able to stand on its own. Bird motifs throughout the architecture on the 1920s American Tudor home informed and inspired the design.

 - Description: A compact patio space that incorporates entertaining and grilling areas. Incorporating the client's wish list yet limited square footage allowed by the town on a corner property made the design aspect of this project challenging.
- [Basking Ridge Farm](https://www.houzz.com/hznb/projects/basking-ridge-farm-pj-vj~2302)
 - Location: Basking Ridge, NJ
 - Photos: 10
 - Description: A small, raised, bluestone patio built into an existing corner of an secondary farm building. The existing wood burning grill from the 1920s was in disrepair so its renovation was the centerpiece of the project. Custom cedar screens provide support for fruiting espaliered apple trees and frame views to the adjacent meadow.
- [Devon Road](https://www.houzz.com/hznb/projects/devon-road-pj-vj~679801)
 - Location: Summit, NJ
 - Photos: 14
 - Description: An expansive bi-level patio was designed to replace a decrepit multi-level deck. On a slope, there were significant design and engineering solutions found to satisfy both the homeowner's desires and town regulations. The project took 18 months from beginning to end and is now used by the family every night as a gathering, play and entertaining space.
- [Color for a Shaded Hillside](https://www.houzz.com/hznb/projects/color-for-a-shaded-hillside-pj-vj~237145)
 - Location: Chatham, NJ
 - Photos: 5
 - Description: A steeply sloped side and back yard transformed into a lush woodland garden with a drystream. My client wanted a naturalistic garden that was serene yet traditional and rustic. The big challenge was the property's sloped corner location and the garden was open on two sides. It is not fenced and is deer resistant.
- [Romantic Ruin](https://www.houzz.com/hznb/projects/romantic-ruin-pj-vj~176209)
 - Location: Summit, NJ
 - Photos: 12
 - Description: A residential landscape with patios, pools, woodland and garden areas. The front entry was designed to resemble a 'ruin' with espaliered fruit trees and planted paving. The rear pool area maximized the limited space and a woodland garden was added for privacy from a busy corner.
- [Westie World](https://www.houzz.com/hznb/projects/westie-world-pj-vj~727900)
 - Location: West Orange, NJ
 - Photos: 11
 - Description: A garden designed for two homeowners and their three Westies. The challenge was to create a garden for mixed ornamentals and edibles along with a safe place for three terriers to run and play on a limited budget. The sloped side yard already had a concrete patio that was refinished and incorporated in the design. Sheet steel was used for the beds that mimics the much more expensive Coreten steel, off the shelf fencing was turned 90 degrees to create a custom look, industrial wire fence surrounds…

## Community Q&A

**Q: what are the garden "boxes" made of?** *(in Photo Questions)*

A: The planter boxes have no bottom and are built from clear cedar. They are only stained on the outside. They are lined with landscape fabric on the inside.

**Q: I love the console table. Can you give me the artists contact info?** *(in Photo Questions)*

I'd like to have a 60" console table made using a piece of labradorite left over from our fireplace.

A: Hi Amy-- Sorry I missed this! The table was built from a salvaged balcony. We designed it and had it fabricated.

**Q: Where did you purchase the fence?** *(in Photo Questions)*

A: The fence was custom fabricated and stained. Both Walpole and Brattleworks have similar. The opaque stain is Benjamin Moore Yorketown Green. Thanks for your interest!

**Q: I love that umbrella** *(in Photo Questions)*

Hi

Do you know where it was purchased?
Thanks

A: It's a traditional Balinese temple umbrella. It was bought at an import shop that is now closed.

**Q: Clematis or peony** *(in Photo Questions)*

I moved house & I have a 6 ft bust full of pink flowers I dont know if it a Clematis or a Peony. How do I tell the what it is.
Thanks Tracey.
I did take a picture if you want to see it somehow

A: If it's a vine, it's probably a clematis. Peonies don't climb.

**Q: Plants** *(in Photo Questions)*

Could you list the plants? Thanks!

A: Some but not all of the plants pictured: Bearded iris, Dianthus, Boxwood, Amsonia, and Deutzia.
