Oops, sorry! Was that my "out loud" voice? **Q: Wood floor stain done correctly?** *(in Flooring)* I recently added hardwood in rooms off of existing hardwood. The install was beautiful, but when we returned home I saw things with the stain that I don’t see on the existing. There are swirls in places on the perimeter, there is one edge that is lighter, and on some boards there are stain ripples. Is this just variation in stain, or was it done incorrectly? If you stand back and look at the job in its entirety, it’s beautiful and matches the existing perfectly. I just want to make sure with what I’ve paid for it, it’s been done right. Thanks for your help! swirls Lighter edge stain ripples A: \#1 = poor finishing (fine sanding & edging) those swirls are "edger" marks, and should have been corrected long before the stain was applied. There's also "screen marks" which are finer than the more obvious swirls. \#2 = looks like more of the same, although reverse... sanded/burnished more than the field area, which makes the wood less receptive to accepting stain. \#3 = just some "wavy grain" similar to burl... you'll find that in almost all natural wood products. **Q: Hardwood Stairs: planks vs solid treads** *(in Flooring)* We recently had new hardwood floors installed (prefinished 3/4” solid hand scraped hickory https://andersontuftex.com/hardwood/details/colonial-manor-mixed-width-aa050/hobnail-37522). We are going to have the same flooring installed on the floors one floor up, and we are replacing carpet from the connecting stairs with wood. We already have decided on a white painted riser (which will match the existing trim nicely). I have two questions on treads for the stairs: (1) Planks vs solid treads: we can use our flooring planks and bullnoses (we have enough flooring already and just would need to buy bullnoses) or buy a solid tread for each step, in which case we would need to have it stained to match our flooring. I have read that the latter - a solid tread - is the preference of most in terms of appearance. My question is durability. If we don’t mind the look of the planks with bullnoses, are we sacrificing in terms of durability to go that route? My suspicion is that a solid tread could be more structurally sound and less prone to problems in the long run, but I would love feedback of others on this. (2) Matching texture of Solid Treads to existing floors: if we go with solid treads, in addition to matching the stain, I would like to achieve the same hand scraped texture that our existing floors have. Are there companies that do this type of work? Our contractor who we’ve used in the past says the treads should just be smooth. I don’t want to go crazy with our spending or make things more complicated than they need to be, but I really like the idea of having the same type of distressed finish on the treads that we have on our floors (and therefore am going back and forth about whether it might be better to just use the prefinished planks with bullnoses...) Thanks for any feedback others can provide! A: Nosings are for landings... (IMHO)… Full/solid treads are the more professional as well as structurally sound approach **Q: I keep ruining our new wood floors- help please** *(in Woodworking)* Hi everyone - I messed up while trying to fix a dent caused my something falling off the counter. The floor company from last time left the stain they used and I was under the impression I could use it for repairs. Once I lightly went over the nick with it, I could tell right away the finish sheen was going to be an issue so I wiped it off and it left a shiny streak mark. What could that have been from? I did use a small amount of wood putty for the dent before, but I also wiped it off right away. I used a very, very small amount of goo gone and very, very tiny amount of paint thinner to try to get the shine off, thinking the paint Stain was just left on there and that’s what was causing it to be shiny. Nothing worked. Was it the stain that caused this? Finish is synteko satin and floor was just refinished a couple months prior. P.S. It is so hard to keep wood floors looking nice!! I feel like they are so sensitive to every fall, scratch, etc :( very frustrating. A: It's sort of late in the game at this point, but what you're experiencing is why I've been recommending various options in finish "styles" for over 40 years. Traditionalists push for the "sand in place" smooth finishes, whereas my preferences (due to those 40+ years experience) have been to suggest or recommend (when asked) something in a more "forgiving" format. Options range from smooth with a wire-brushed "lightly textured" surface, to a wide variety of hand-scraped or "distressed" styles. There are choices in that realm that lean toward a more subtle result, and they'll even cohabitate readily in a contemporary or traditional design. The key is to avoid that "piano-top" finish which will emphasize any mishap, which let's face it, is part of everyday life if you're a floor. What I've always contended was, that a "distressed style" finish doesn't HAVE to look like it's been home to the Clydesdales. **Q: Quality check - engineered flooring brands. Please help!** *(in Flooring)* Can someone point me to a quality, reputable brand of engineered wood flooring? I'm having a hard time determining brand quality (durability, warranty, VOCs, etc). There are so many Chinese-made products that have a "house brand" or local label on it, which makes it difficult to research. Other national brands seem legit but wind up with horrible reviews. I've looked at Mirage, DeChateau, and Lauzon, and Monarch, but I haven't found anything that worked. At the moment I'm looking at Somerset, Allwood, and Naturally Aged Flooring. Any input or advice is appreciated! Thank you! A: There's a veritable HERD of people out there who claim they can provide top notch choices. Having been in this business (hardwood flooring) for decades, I've seen & heard it all, and can attest to the reality that, if due diligence is practiced, there are a few of us out there that CAN actually provide top shelf options, and do so at reasonable price points. I sympathize with the present day shopper who has adapted to a climate of "online shopping", and be disappointed because of the fact that anyone with a pulse can claim to be "experienced" and post photos that look great. As they say... "Caveat Emptor". And keep in mind that the "best price" doesn't ensure the "best deal"... **Q: First floor flooring - manufactured wood or replace vinyl and carpet?** *(in Flooring)* Our house is 19 years old and has original carpet and vinyl downstairs, about 1100 square feet, that includes an office, living/dining room, family room, kitchen, 1/2 bath, and laundry room. The vinyl runs through the kitchen into the laundry room. (First photo is near the front door, second photo is to show the place where the different floorings all come together.) We've recently replaced the carpet on the stairs and in all of the rooms upstairs with Shaw Anso nylon carpet. While I'm happy with that choice, I don't want it downstairs for a bunch of reasons. We recently got an estimate from one of the most reputable flooring places in town to put Abode Maple Harvest Moon manufactured wood flooring all downstairs. It's a color that we felt contrasts just enough with the maple cabinetry and goes nicely with the darker countertops, but isn't \*too\* dark (3rd picture is from the computer generated room you can create on Abode's website - wish I could throw an area rug down in the photo!) Because of some bathroom updates along with the new carpet upstairs we've done the past year, we don't have an unlimited budget, about $10K is what we can spend, and the estimate is $16K, which includes all of the demo, a new subfloor (curious what people think about this part), the cost of the flooring, and moving of appliances. We'd have to put the baseboards back ourselves or find a handyman to do it, so that's potentially another cost (my husband is handy but his knees are bad so I don't want him doing this. Maybe I could though?) I'm curious what others here would do? 1\) Keep on with the hardwood plan but get more bids to see if the price will come down? 2\) Or look at carpet and vinyl options and keep the wood entryway and flooring as it is now? It always helps if people on Houzz would at least give a hint... haha... the numbers vary from one region to the next. That said, if one breaks down the numbers... the 16 grand you mention breaks down to around $ 14.50 sq. ft., which IMHO isn't that outlandish if there's installation & pep included. If you consider a budget (which I understand & respect) of around 10 G... that equates to a little over 9 bucks a foot, and in all honesty, there has to be some serious thought put into what one can obtain as far as quality of material AND labor in that range. However, you'd be well served to consider the fact that, in making a good choice on hardwood flooring presently, it would far outlast anything else in the carpet or vinyl market. You'd be back at square one in a few years because most of the products on the carpet/vinyl/ (& cheap wood, for that matter)… will wear out, become out of style, or BOTH within that time frame.
