> Lynn designed a beautiful kitchen that was not limited by budget as much as it was limited by the amount of space.  She was exacting in her attention to choices, detail, measurements, and progress over time, coordinating constantly with the contractor.  We have a 150 year old Victorian home and while we wanted to preserve Victorian detail, we also wanted a striking, heart-stopping kitchen.  We chose to gut the approximately 11x11 sq. ft room to the roof rafters, level and install new flooring and design cabinets with new stainless steel appliances to achieve a detailed but simple, functional layout with as much cabinet space as possible and accommodating a peninsula seating two people.  The centrepiece is quartzite counters and backsplash with a flow of white, gray, and deep navy with touches of bronze.  The peninsula is a deep navy; the rest of the cabinets are in Chantilly Lace, a startling white white by BM.  A feature cabinet displays mesh doors in antique pewter. Crown moldings, cabinet detail and burnished brass speak softly to the vintage of the house. Features such as an apron sink, power slide cabinets, a step stool hidden under a cabinet, a chrome oil/spice rollout, legrabox drawers and cutlery holders provide constant delight for the person who has to prepare the meals.  We highly recommend Lynn--she has a very experienced eye as to what can and cannot be done, an artistic appreciation of what works well together and she is rigorous in her focus on the client.

**Q: Coronavirus: should it put a remodel on hold?** *(in Cleaning Tips)*

For anyone currently in the thick of a remodel (or anyone who has an opinion): are you and/or your GC and workers doing anything different due to the COVID19? 

Obviously they are disinfecting and washing their hands a ton. But is anyone having their crews stay home? or ?

A: Ontario has just announced all non-essential businesses to be closed as of Wednesday.  I've got countertops installing tomorrow night and that's it, I won't be able to go back to get the service parts installed until who knows when, consequently we won't be able to collect our final 10%.
All my other prospects have cancelled their appointments, and my contractors haven't decided what to do yet.  Hang on everyone, we'll get through this, just be level headed.  Homeowners in the middle of a remodel - I believe it would be considered "essential service" if it is preventing you from cooking in your kitchen.

**Q: Gray- Light Gray Engineered wood floors?  Experience or Direction?** *(in Flooring)*

Hoping to begin our build shortly and thought we had our LVP floors selected, using the same floor throughout our little 1900 sq' river cottage.  My SO REALLY likes the idea of being able to mop LVP, and currently has them in her home and loves them.

I'm still a little skeptical, and want to explore all the options.  I certainly don't want to have regrets on a whole house selection.

We're going for beach like, key west feel, which leads us to a lighter color floor (at least that's her opinion and I'm unlikely to change it.)

I've only briefly investigated Engineered wood, but the few stores I've been in have had almost zero selection of grayer lighter distressed looking finishes.  Stumbled on a few online, but nothing that I can witness locally.

Anyone here happen to install something that might fill the void?  Of course, the LVP is $3-4.50 per sq', and I know the EW will be more, but hoping to control the excess.  Twice the price won't be an option.

A: A designer friend of mine recently installed LVP flooring in her Muskoka cottage and it looks and feels like real wood!  It's absolutely gorgeous and there are a lot of colours available in those nice gray tones.  Do some research about the manufacturing differences, installation techniques and long term care.  I know that if you do get a scratch you'll need a marker if the colour isn't all the way through the material.  Are you in the GTA area?  I can recommend a few stores.  One of the best products is made by Torlys, check this out:   https://residential.torlys.com/collections/vinyl/ 
and their product is sold at lots of good retailers.

**Q: Can you use different KNOBS in a kitchen?** *(in Design Dilemma)*

I bought a spec house and want to replace the cabinet knobs, but don't want to drill holes for pulls.  Can you use different knobs--one type of knob on the cabinets and a different type of knob on the drawers?  Suggestions?  Thanks!

A: Congrats on your new home!   There are knobs and handles with decorative back plates in many styles which can really add to the look of your kitchen. Yes you can use different knobs - sometimes they are the same style, just a different size, sometimes they are completely different.  Decorative hardware is like the jewelry of the kitchen, just like how we accessorize when we dress.   If you are also planning on adding pendant lighting, or backsplash tile you can choose a colour and finish in all these elements to coordinate with the finish on your hardware.   Ask yourself what you want the finished result to say. 
I will say that the trend these days is more toward handles, so don't be afraid of drilling that extra hole on the cabinet doors for a great looking handle.

**Q: Flooring for kitchen in 100 year old house. Help please!!!** *(in Flooring)*

I can not make up my mind about flooring material for my kitchen we have been renovating. We have an old house and this part of the house was added on in the 70s. I am trying to make it belong to the rest of the house and picked more classic design. My husband wants 12"x24" dark (almost black) porcelain tile for ease of maintenance and installation but I feel like it doesn't belong to an old house. I kind of like the idea of large hex tile but my husband thinks they are for bathrooms. Our kitchen is a part of a great room and its flooring will butt against oak flooring in 3 sides. (on the second photo, it will be oak beyond the post. My first choice would be extending oak but we want radiant heating so it has to be something heat resistant. I think engineered hardwood is possible but I don't know how hard it is to match the existing flooring. Also this part would be slightly raised from existing oak flooring. I feel it should be something drastically different to make it more intentional if can not be matched completely.  Help please!

A: not to worry, the correct way is to remove the dishwasher, install the flooring under it and reinstall it.  The dishwasher legs can be adjusted to the height.

**Q: Kitchen Layout - Can't decide** *(in Design Dilemma)*

I'm renovating my tiny kitchen and looking for the best use of the space.  The cabinet company came up with this suggestion for a layout.  On the island would be a drawer microwave.  I'm thinking maybe I should move the sink, dishwasher and trash bins to the island and move microwave to other side but can't decide what is best.  Thoughts?

A: It's not easy to do a tiny kitchen but you'd be surprised at all the options available.  One thing to remember is that storage is more about accessibility than volume of space - if you can get at it you can use it. 
Moving the sink to the island is popular but it depends on how large the island is.  You need at least 82" long to accommodate sink, dishwasher and trash pullout on the long side, and preferably 42" wide if there is an overhang for chairs.  I don't see island chairs in the layout so if no chairs, width can be 27 - 36".  People like having large island space for laying out a buffet spread of food for entertaining.  If there are bar chairs you want the width deeper so you don't get splashed when someone is using the sink.  
The other complication to moving the sink to the island is the expense and the ability to move the plumbing there, plus electrical for the island (code) and dishwasher.  
Can I make another suggestion?  Instead of having a big pantry closet, tear it out and install a tall deep pantry cabinet with pull-outs inside.  24" wide is more than enough and pull outs make everything accessible.  This will give you more counterspace and the option to move the range to that space next to the fridge so the sink can go where the range is in this layout.  Then you can have the island all clear. **Q: Paint recommendation for bathroom to complement tile** *(in Paint)*

Renovating newbie here so I ordered my shower tile online - and didn’t really see how they would jive in person until they were installed. whoops. Now I can see that the white subway tile is very white, while the marble-like quartz curb and porcelain floor is definitely off-white, and the contrast is quite stark in person. 
at this point, I’m leaving as is but now I‘m trying to find the right paint color that will complement the tile and tie the room together. Originally I was going to go with SW Pure White but don‘t want to layer a third white in the mix so am thinking of a gray that will complement the floor/quartz instead. the bathroom gets some natural light through a full-lite door, but also has recessed lighting and vanity lights. Planning for a teak vanity

Any recommendations for a good paint color for the walls - especially a light gray? thanks so much!

A: white, gray and teak wood are a timeless classic - definitely go with a grey - I like Benjamin Moore historical colours best.  Don't be afraid to go with a darker tone for contrast and drama as long as there is lots of good clean lighting.  White trim.  Take your tile samples to the paint store and use their colour correct lighting to select paint swatches then take them home.  You can also order a "sample" can of paint - then paint a patch about 12 x 18" on each wall to see how the light reacts to the colour.  Maybe try 2 or 3 tones.  You'll know which one to go with for sure!
