**Q: Standard overhang on kitchen island** *(in Design Dilemma)*

I am changing my island so my 4 kids can sit at it. How many inches is a standard overhang so that I can pull a bar stool up to it and my kids can sit at the island to eat and do homework?

A: Standard overhang on a kitchen island is typically 12". That usually leaves enough space to tuck a 10" barstool underneath and is comfortable to sit at.

**Q: Restaining my oak trim** *(in Design Dilemma)*

I have a house built in 1923, with original oak trim.  The dining room trim is dark brown, however the living room and hall trim has an orangey undertone that I really hate.  
My option is to paint the walls a colour that will downplay the orange undertone, or else have them sanded an restained a more neutral brown.
I was reading that sanding old wood and then staining it would actually make it look worse and devalue it - does anyone have any experience with this?
Also, any advice on stain colours if I go with the sanding/staining route?

A: I could check the can tomorrow when I'm at the shop, but I'm pretty sure you can go over urethanes with this product. Just needs a light scuff sanding.

**Q: Trim on fireplace** *(in Design Dilemma)*

We are getting bookshelves built next to our fireplace.  The mantle shelf will go straight across.  The builder is going to bring the box around the fireplace out so it is flush with the shelves.  

We need help figuring out the type of trim to put on it and deciding if the trim should just go straight across the front or extend it down the sides.

Looking for traditional trim.

A: I would suggest crown molding on top with fluted trim down the sides of the mantle to make it stand out more. You want the mantle to be a focal point. You could even build the mantle slightly deeper than the bookshelves to give it some dimension. Provided you stay within the limits of the fireplace specs.

**Q: cabinets...help!** *(in Design Dilemma)*

Id like to reface my cabinets but the only real wood is on the doors and trim.  The big wall under the peninsula is like a laminate as well as the sides of the cabinets. not sure what I would be able to cover it with.  I am looking to update the kitchen and feel the cabinets are the last thing to do before finishing up the room. Any suggestions?

A: If your thinking of white, Ben Moore Swiss coffee is a nice color.

How do I protect the NEW BUTCHER BLOCK top on my kitchen island ??

A: A couple coats of mineral oil does the job. Mineral oil is non-toxic and food safe. You can also re-coat it every so often as needed.

**Q: Perfect Grey oak floors** *(in Design Dilemma)*

Does anyone have a good formula?

A: I would check Sherwin, I believe they carry a couple different shades of gray stain. You can skip the walnut stain step also. Another option is to spray lye based oven cleaner on the wood. This will make it look weathered also.
