## About

### Houzz Badges

Our projects range from kitchen renovations to new custom homes and cabins, placing an equal emphasis on style, function, health and poetics, woven together with the thread of ecological design, and mindful of long term cost. We are intrigued by multigenerational houses, backyard cottages, tiny houses, co-housing and small multi-family projects. We can bring the Passive House approach to all of these building types. With roots in Seattle and almost 30 years doing exclusively green design we are uniquely qualified to help you create lasting, beautiful deep-green buildings.

In 2009 I became one of the first 100 certified Passive House consultants in the United States, and we have pursued that design approach with every appropriate project since. I have over thirty-five years of experience as a design professional, including more than thirty years as principal of my own firm. I grew up in a small town in northeastern Ohio and studied architecture at the University of Toronto.

The projects here on Houzz are just a taste. Please visit my website for many more.

> Rob was instrumental in the construction of our ideal vacation home. We had some general ideas of how we wanted the place to feel and relate to the wonderful - wanting to feel connected to the outdoors while cozy inside. And we wanted the house to be as green as feasible Through careful listening, creative thinking and practical problem solving, Rob helped us design a great home. Then he worked collaboratively with contractor to make it all come together. He respected our budget, kept things moving along - we developed a friendly and trusting relationship. My best experience ever working with an architect.

> I hired Rob Harrison to do a green remodel of my log cabin built in the 1930s in Indianola, including renovating the original kitchen and bathroom. His design creatively and thoughtfully took into account the historic nature of the cabin, while upgrading it so that it's more energy efficient and green. For example, since the one-room (living room/sleeping loft) cabin is heated primarily by a wood stove, we installed heated floors in the kitchen and bathroom to heat the back of the house--and we all love (dogs and cats especially) the results. Now we can maintain heat in the cabin by leaving the floors on low, which keeps the house dryer, too. We also added several skylights to the back of the house, which let in more much-needed light. From the outside, the cabin still looks like it was built in the 1930s, but inside, it's much more functional, comfortable and energy efficient, thanks to Rob and his team. I appreciated working with someone who's knowledgeable of all the new, sustainable products but also appreciates the aesthetics of a traditional design such as a log cabin.

 - Description: An 1,100 SF near-Passivhaus cabin in the Okanogan Highlands, at an elevation of 4,250 feet. The Passive House approach allowed us to have lots of large windows facing the sun and the view, while still keeping heating energy use down to about 20% of a similar cabin built to the current Washington State Energy Code. I say "near-Passivhaus" because the ultra-high performance German windows we specified and needed to meet the standard were just too expensive, so we substituted different, lower-perfo…

 - Description: A four-suite multigenerational house for an extended American family, designed to meet the most rigorous energy standard in the world, Passive House (Passivhaus). It will be located on Echo Lake in Shoreline, Washington. Projects that meet the Passive House standard use as little as 10% of the heating and cooling energy of houses built to the current Washington State energy code.

 - Description: Several passersby have remarked that they thought this was a remodel of an old farmhouse. I'm flattered, since “farmhouse” was what said “home” to my clients. In plan and section however it's really quite unlike a farmhouse. And it is a new house.

 - Description: Our goal was to make a simple, modern workshop outbuilding to be used for hobby cabinetmaking and appropriately reverent storage and display of our client’s vintage Mercedes 230SL convertible. The idea of a planted roof came up early in the design process. By setting the floor level low and digging the building partly into the site, and sloping the roof up and away from the neighbors yard and planting it, we minimized the visual impact of the new structure, as well as accruing all the environmen…

## Community Q&A

**Q: what product is used to cover transom? Thank you** *(in Photo Questions)*

A: Crystalite polycarbonate.

**Q: Love the details! Where can I find the plan layout ?** *(in Photo Questions)*

Hello sir! I am an architecture student from Malaysia. I'm currently doing a precedence study on carpentry workshop and I am using yours as my reference. I'm wondering if you could share the workshop's plan layout for my studies. Thank you!

A: It is a very simple 20' x 40' rectangle. You can see more here: http://harrisonarchitects.com/portfolio\_item/green-roof-workshop/

**Q: What type of wood has been used for these cabinets?** *(in Photo Questions)*

A: The stiles and rails of the cabinets are made of reclaimed vertical grain Douglas fir, and the door and drawer panels are made with v.g. fir plywood.

**Q: Where is the fireplace from?** *(in Photo Questions)*

A: Hi Lisa,
Here's a link: http://morsoe.com/us/indoor/wood-burning-stove/shop/p6140\_us

My clients say: "We really like it - it is just the right size to heat the cabin and looks great, performs well, easy to start, easy to clean. Still looks brand new even after burning several cords of wood over the past couple of years. We discovered the trick to cleaning the glass is wiping it down with a damp paper towel coated in ashes from the ash pan."

Note that the cabin is very close to Passive House performance, so the amount of heat needed is very small. A small fire in the stove quickly brings the cabin up to temperature when they haven't been there. :)
