need a solution** *(in Remodeling)* To make a long story short, my world was shattered yesterday (j/k) when I found out that I cannot do a standard horizonal subway tile backsplash because my counters have a 5/8 of an inch slope/slant (along a 12 ft piece). This is above the accepted tolerance that installers can work around with manipulating grout lines. one installer said something about putting a shim on the counters, but we do not want to do this and risk ruining the counters. i've had two opinions, so i'm moving on.... Anyone have any ideas for something we could do instead? 1\. no backsplash at all 2\. vertical backsplash (I'm not sure this would look great because our granite counters have a horizontal pattern) 3\. only put backsplash above the stove to catch oil/grease splatter 4\. only push backsplash above the stove and above the sink to catch splatter A: If your counter tops are not level, you need to get that corrected before moving forward with any back splash tile. The counter top won't break if you have someone level it. Whoever installed it for you should come back and fix it at no cost. That is a significant mistake and shows a lack of attention to detail and questionable professionalism. It means that objects will be able to roll across or off your counter top. That's not how they are supposed to work. **Q: What would you do: budget kitchen remodel w/ golden oak cabinets?** *(in Remodeling)* I’m back to considering a budget make-over for my kitchen (vs. the $$$ half-house remodel.) What would you do? (Pics below). I own a 1940 bungalow. The front of the house is super cute and original. The kitchen is a 1980s remuddle. Is it a bad idea to first try to save the golden oak cabinets and only paint them later, if needed? (my house painter bid $3300). Here’s my latest thought: what if I start with the stuff I can do myself. A) deep cleaning/de-cluttering inside cabinets. B) cleanup and touch up cabinets w/ Olde English; C) throw down some better rugs as a stop-gap measure to cover the yellowing, busy floor (On order). D) new window covering and better decorating. E) buy new stainless steel appliances. (Black Friday sales)? Including fan. F) possibly add hardware to make cabinets look more like shaker and less like 80s. (I’d hire a handyman for that). G) possibly try to stain the cabinets a slightly darker color to match the quarter-sawn oak chairs in the nook (and dining room table in other room). Then later in the spring, with permits (when my GC is remodeling the master bath): new counters (quartz, off white), new sink, new faucet, new lighting; backsplash; new flooring (flooring material TBD. I have doug fir in the adjoining room) new paint etc I guess my reasoning is to start with low-cost stuff I can do myself to gauge whether I’ll be happy with a refresh vs. the big remodel and...whether I could live with the oak vs. having them painted. (I don’t want to wait until the counters are in to decide I need to paint them). Thoughts? Comments? Does this sound reasonable or am I just a commitment phobe or ?? — A: Refinishing cabinets is a lot of work (hence the expense you were quoted) and it is not advised that you DIY it unless you've had a lot of experience with stripping and staining wood. You will absolutely have to strip the existing finish before applying new stain or paint. Doing this incorrectly can permanently damage your cabinetry...and then it will definitely be $$$. Our suggestion: Hire a pro to refinish your cabinets. Get new countertops (quartz), a new backsplash, and LVT or LVP flooring (afforadable compared to tile or hardwood), and switch to stainless steel appliances. This could be done in stages. In the end, you will have a new kitchen. **Q: Should I put LED lighting in my walk in closet?** *(in Design Dilemma)* The closet has no windows or natural light. The electrician suggested LED. Is that recommended here as well? A: Yes, LEDs are great for closets. You'll never have to replace them and it will make looking for things in that closet so much easier. **Q: Foyer Lighting for 11' Ceiling** *(in Lighting)* Hi! I am in the process of building a new home. The entry foyer is 5'-8" wide and has 2 trays with 11' ceilings. What size light fixture should I put in the trays? I bought 2 light fixtures with these dimensions: 29 H X 16 W X 16 D (in) Are they too big? Thank you so much! Linda A: Consider using one light fixture, such as a chandelier. The width should be the length + width of the foyer, but in inches. If your foyer is 5x10, your fixture should be 15 inches wide. **Q: Kitchen Backsplash for apartment with high heat and oil cooking** *(in Design Dilemma)* Hi, I'm trying to figure out what material to use for a kitchen backsplash for my apartment. I do daily cooking using high heat and oil (searing meats on pans with oil, sauteeing veggies, etc). Below is how the kitchen looks with black granite countertops. What material should I use that'll fit design wise and practicality wise for our cooking style? Looking for something easy to clean with all the oil. Also, should I put backsplash behind the microwave or the section of the stove where the black granite is, or where the fridge is? Thanks in advance! There is no need to put it directly behind the fridge or microwave. **Q: Which way to put the bathroom wood-floor grain?** *(in Flooring)* I know it's common to run it the long way from the door entry in to the tub...but what if the hallway flooring outside the bathroom is running sideways perpendicular to it?
