**Q: Should a contractor notify the homeowner about unexpected cost?** *(in Home Disasters)*

We recently did a large renovation on our home. We started with a specific budget then decided we wanted to add a couple things so ultimate consulted with our contractor and adjusted the budget up to get the changes we wanted. As far as we knew everything was going well. We checked in with our contractor multiple times for an update on where we were budget wise. He ultimate said that he didn’t give numbers until the end of renovations but based on how things were progressing we were within and maybe even under our adjusted budget. He actually commented that he was surprised there were no major issues during renovation since there usually is always something that comes up. 

Sounds awesome right? We thought so too. 

When renovation completed we paid him what he implied was the final payment which brought us in just under budgets. However, about week after we moved in we got a bill from him for about 50K more. We were so confused. 

Then the next day he shows up at our house randomly to make sure that we understood that he need the invoice paid in full within 48hrs. So, we asked all the questions we had about where these expenses came from. He said that there were rotted out pipes in our house they had to repipe & our floors weren’t level so they have to do extra work to get the floors level throughout. This was the first time he had mentioned either of those things to us. We had no idea there was ever any issues with the renovation that resulted in added expenses. Plus, some of the items came in double what was budgeted even though he assured us that we were well within budget and there were no problems every time we asked while the renovation was on going. 

His response to our questions about the bill was that the work was already done in the house and we could either pay for it or he would try to take our house.

A: Seek a reputable lawyer ASAP!!! MAKE SURE THAT HE HAS EXPERIENCE IN THIS SORT OF PROBLEM!!!! Please don"t settle for less!

**Q: How do you paint the front door?** *(in Paint)*

Maybe it's silly, but if you paint your front door what do you do while it's drying?

A: I always like to do doors on a set of horses. Prep work, especially sanding, and painting is a breeze when you have gone the extra effort! Paint and or varnish (or Poly) does not run when horizontal! If you need to do both sides, you can sand them both first paint one side rehang the door overnight. When your ready to finish the inside just unhinge the door and boom your done! Good Luck!

**Q: Need help with my pressure washer** *(in Tool Shed)*

My Ryobi electric pressure washer seemed to be working all right yesterday, but today, when I try to start it, the engine just comes on for a moment or two, then stops. I've tried pressing the 'reset' button but nothing happens (and I'm not even sure how long you're supposed to hold it). I've tried plugging the pressure washer to different outlets to see if the problem was with t outlet, but to no avail. I'm a complete novice, so if this involves "resetting the house/shop breaker", I guess i'll need to find a site that will spell that out for me real clearly, but one thing at a time for now I suppose. Any help greatly appreciated.

A: I would look up PW plus motor model number and Google it see what that may bring up? and does not hurt to double check reading your manual!!

**Q: Stain v. paint new porch floor** *(in The Old House)*

Hi,
I have an 1875 Victorian workingman's cottage in the vernacular Gothic Revival style.  I've recently had the covered attached front porch rebuilt (framing was rotted as well as some floorboards), and a new cedar floor was laid.  My contractor thinks a stain would nice.  I've always had in mind to paint it gray.  Some people think a stain would like nice because the wood looks so good and it would be less maintenance than a painted floor.  Also it would hide dirt better.  Any opinions?  The posts are painted white and I'm planning to paint the railings white as well.

A: so which way did you go? Semi solid or semi trans IS my choice!! No painting on cedar!

**Q: fingerling potato trade?** *(in The Seed Exchange)*

I have saved potatoes of Magic Molly and Rose Finn Apple. Would anyone want to trade either of these for another fingerling such as Russian Banana? 
I also have lots of seeds which I am having trouble adding to this post.
