BEST OF HOUZZ 2017!! A/V Consulting has been serving discerning clients in San Diego since 2006 and now servicing Park City, UT. We specialized in truly great service after the sale. Whatever you can dream, we can create. We specialize in the design process to create a system that simply performs better and smarter. Whether it's a simple surround system with one remote control, or and entire estate controlled fully by iPads, it simply must be reliable.
As both music lover and a person truly inspired by great sound, I wanted to bring that experience to everyone. My father was an audiophile/gear guy and he passed his addiction to great sound on to me. I can't remember a time when I was't working with or playing with amps and speakers. Later on, I had the opportunity to do some very high end theaters and I learned and trained with the best in the industry to learn ISF video standards and the ins and outs of all things video. Today, I've combined those attributes with all the technology and automation practices available, to be able to deliver the absolute best systems and products on the market and see them come to life in your house to enhance your experience.
I started A/V Consulting after being in the industry for over 10 years and that's now been over 10 years ago. I truly believe in making your experience a remarkable one.

> We moved from Northern California to San Diego so finding a team with little experience knowing who to turn to for our remodeling project was unknown waters. John provided his plan for equipment and installation and successfully delivered 110% on what he said he would do. The quality of his work installing a complete sound system with in wall speakers required some creativity and determination—and the final results sound and look clean and professional. His recommendation to install a Sonos audio system is not only great sound but the functionality and flexibility is enabling us to get more enjoyment from the end to end system that he installed.

> We just moved into the area and got a referral from our realtor for AV Consulting to set up our music and TV equipment. John helped procure some new equipment (TV and sonos) and set it all up. He got good prices on the new equipment and installed all the equipment, wall mounted our other tvs throughout the house, including some repositioned electrical outlets. He and his partner, John, worked well together and did a very professional job just as he had planned. Great job, John.

> I had a project that I was working on with another contractor at our house for months. Not only did I spend countless of wasted hours , I also wasted money trying to get the project done with the previous contractor. I decided to to let John give it a try and not only was his price fair he got the job done in two visits! He knew exactly what I needed and set me up so that it didn’t take a rocket scientist to figure out how to turn our project on! I will never use any other contractor!

> John took the time to listen to our wants and needs and design a cost effective solution for our patio area. Our house has become the gathering place with our friends to watch sporting events on our outdoor tv while the kids swim in the pool. So very cool, thanks John!

> As an interior designer, I have had the opportunity to work with John Walker at A/V Consulting for many years. John is a true professional. He is my first recommendation to my clients that truly want quality audio & video components in their home. He is so knowledgable and pays such meticulous attention to detail you feel completely taken care of in every aspect. I had the privilege to be invited to watch a movie in one of the home theaters John installed in Rancho Santa Fe, I was blown away by the sound, picture, quality I forgot I was in someone's home! I would with out a doubt recommend him for any audio video needs. He is a true expert!

> John is fantastic and easy to work with. He manages to handle all emergencies quickly and very efficiently! I have worked with him for a few years now and I highly recommend him.

> John Walker was recommended by the Contractor who remodeled my Kitchen and Media area. John is incredibly knowledgeable about his product(s). He installed an awesome big screen tv with sound bar (the best!), Apple TV and programmed EVERYTHING for me, on one remote! That, in and of itself, is worth any amount of $$$$. He completed his work in an orderly and timely manner and ensured all my expectations were met. When I remodel the upstairs...He's on my recall list!

> John Walker of A/V Consulting came highly recommended by our trusted General Contractor and we are very pleased by his work. He installed a surround system in our family room, Sonos sound system and speakers throughout our house and addressed our sketchy wifi. He is very trustworthy, knowledgable and committed to doing an excellent job.

**Comment from A/V Consulting:**

> Thank you, it's been a pleasure working with you and Chris.

> When we began our complete condo remodel both designer and contractor urged us to hire an A/V specialist early in the process to ensure speakers, TV and wireless access were planned along with the construction. To be honest, given the expense of the project, the small footprint of the condo and our limited experience with surround sound, we were inclined to simply put a sound bar below the TV, get a couple of Bose speakers for our iPhones, and leave it at that. We met with John Walker, owner of A/V Consulting, who designed a complete system of ceiling speakers, subwoofer, TVs with surround sound and a universal remote to control video and audio in three zones. He worked with us to stay within our budget and, as we thought more about it, we ended up upgrading our speakers. We are so happy we worked with John and built in this system. We are in our sixties and have never had sound like this. We are giddy with excitement over the quality of music throughout our home, the crispness of the TV picture and sound, and the ability to stream easily with a universal remote or our iPhones. The sound system is the capstone of a beautiful new home, and it was designed by John specifically with our needs and desires in mind.
> John is very accommodating and patient as we learn to use the new system and responsive when we have questions. We highly recommend A/V Consulting.

> John Walker has managed the installation of all our media center upgrades for the past 10 years. Based upon these multiple experiences, I wouldn't dream of using anyone else for many reasons. First of all, his advice of what components to buy and what components to avoid has always been right on target. Specifically, he has always helped me to avoid spending more money than I need to in order to get the desired result. He has helped me to avoid the latest "hyped" product when it was too early perhaps to reap the benefits of the new technology. He isn't afraid to talk me out of something that I was strongly considering, and I've learned as a result to totally trust his judgement. At one point, we were experiencing problems with WIFI coverage in the house because of decisions our family made of what routers to buy. I had originally thought that because of the size of our house and signal interference perhaps we needed even more "commercial" robust routers to solve our problem. John was able to talk me out of needing to go in that direction and totally solved our WIFI problem. I've learned from experience to go with what John recommends and that saves me hours of research and delivers the desired results every time.

> I have had John Walker at A/V Consulting doing my A/V work for so long, I sort of forget how long it has actually been. If I really stop and think, it has probably been 15 years or more. John takes painstaking pride in his work, no matter the size of the task. We did a major home renovation 5 years ago, with John rewiring the entire house for TV, computer, radio, satellite radio, CD, DVD, & Apple TV, with 6 zones, and prep for more zones, if I ever decide to expand. This was all difficult work, that John did, and my wife and I continue to enjoy his mastery of his craft. If I need something, I just call John.

> We moved down to San Diego from the Bay Area and purchased a house in Rancho Santa Fe. The previous homeowner recommended John Walker and A/V Consulting to handle the audio, video and control system. The house had previously had a Crestron control system in it, so we replaced with the same. We are not very technology oriented and were worried that the system would be too complicated. We could not have been more wrong. John worked with us to design the system that would do exactly what we wanted. We use iPads to control the entire system, including audio, video, heating/cooling, and security. It’s great and we we really enjoy using it. We then had a surveillance system installed which, again, we can access from any device from anywhere.
> Above all, John and his staff have been incredibly responsive to any issues and have provided top notch customer service
> Just this last year we completed a substantial remodel and addition to the house which included a full theme theater. John and his crew did an amazing job designing the perfect system for us and now our theater is our favorite room in the house. It really is better than going to any movie theater, and it’s right in our house.
> We would highly recommend A/V Consulting to anyone!

## Community Q&A

**Q: Samsung tv nightmare- itvs only 9 months old** *(in Electronics)*

Tv constantly needs a thumbdrive sent to me from Samsung because it needs 'updating'. It is a smart tv, although I do not have/use the internet now. Tv is about 9 months old. Samsung says they will not be responsible once the 1 year warranty is up. This tv cannot even keep the correct time. I have read many accounts of similiar problems. What can be done- especially after it is 1 year old?? My microave needed a new mother board at 7 months old, my samsung phone had to be sent back. I am done with Samsung!!

A: Ed, I install LOTS of Samsung TV's.. The problem is, the features you want... Program guide, time etc... All come through the internet connection. There's nothing wrong with the TV... Unfortunately you have 2 options, Connect the TV to internet, OR, turn off all the update features. All the program guide info etc.. ALL comes through it's internet connection.

**Q: Yamaha HTR-5460 Obsolete? No DHMI port.** *(in Electronics)*

Do we have to buy a new A/V receiver? The newer Cable Boxes, TV's and DVD players have only HDMI connections. Or...is there a way to convert the receiver? (It's connected to five speakers.)
Comcast installed Xfinity service with 75 Mbps yesterday. AT&T's tortoise-speed internet is gone. We can stream movies. We now have an Xfinity-1 TV package, replacing the DirecTV we've had for decades. We like the Xfinity speech-recognition remote.
We need to replace the pre-2015 Sony BluRay that is connected to our receiver; newer models support CC -- but have only HDMI ports.
A little help, please?

A: You are correct. While you COULD cobble together something that would work, you would spend more doing that then just replacing your AV Receiver. And, yes, you can get one the will "do the job" for around a $200, my advice is set your price point to more like $500-$700 and get something that you will have for the next 10 years.

**Q: X post: Anyone know anything about HD / 4K tvs?** *(in Electronics)*

Posted in computer forum also.
Bought our first 4K UHD tv at BB. It's a Sony 55X850C, trading up from rear projector Sony which was amazing. I don't understand why all of the non-HD channel look lackluster. No sharpness to the pic, pixelated, fuzzy, and wording is broken up. From scene to scene I can see the TV try to adjust the pixels to some degree, but, they are still quite noticeable...and annoying. All the HD channels look great though. I have tried calibrating the TV myself along with using Internet suggested settings to no avail leaving the non-HD channel pictures looking washed out and faded.
I know there isn't much programming out there yet for 4K viewing, but, is this as good as it gets with these TV's? My mom has a non-smart Samsung and her pic is always so vibrant even on non-HD channels.
What am I missing? I'm ready to return the set not knowing if I'll find another that might be better. I have posted a similar question on Q&A sites but no replies. BTW, we have Fios if that matters. Sony site doesn't help much as I've been there. Thanks.

A: The simplest explanation is this... Imagine that you are now looking at the Standard Def channels through a microscope. For the first time, you can really see all the "junk" that you never noticed before. Also, the fact that your eyes are going immediately form HD to SD, you now have a new baseline of comparison. Makes the difference really stand out.

**Q: Home Audio/Automation prep** *(in Electronics)*

Because well, we all need another thread :-)
Doing a major reno on our 1960's back split and opening up a lot of space. In the end it will be a rectangle room about 27ft wide/deep and 40-45ft long. Large open space with the main Family Room, Dining Room, and Kitchen. I love tech and am pretty comfortable with it. Also come from a family of electricians so my father and I will be doing all the electrical. Questions.
\- I'll be running wires for audio in most/all rooms. Most likely end up with 8 zones - Master, Kitchen, Living, Family Room, Outdoor Patio area, Master Bathroom, potentially hallway or another bdrm or two. Should I run speaker wire, or cat5
\- Home Audio. I have read a lot about sonos and I like the large library of audio sources (mostly stream) but I don't like small dock style speakers. Feel a compromise in quality of sound? I'm thinking in ceiling speaker with the odd sub placed in key rooms. Am I missing something with Sonos? I know I can use the connect in each room but then I'm up to 6-8 sonos connects.. must be a better way.
-budget? How much would you budget for a 3500sq ft home with the above?

A: For wiring, run both.... The way we wire houses, re run 16/4 (or 14/4) and a Cat5 (Cat6) to a Volume control/keypad location, then go from there to the speakers with 16/2. That way you have the option of putting in Volume Controls or a keypad based system. IF you don't need it, you blank it off. As for the Sonos, you could use the Sonos Connect Amps and In-Ceiling speakers, but then yes, you would either need one for each zone ($499 each) or you can put some zones together and use Volume controls for volume separation. Budget is a hard one. You can expect to spend $350-$1500 per pair of decent in-ceiling speakers(8", maybe a little less for 6"). Anything below that is what we call "contractors grade" is is pretty much a waste of time.

**Q: Tv and sunny room** *(in Electronics)*

I want to get dh a 50"-60" tv for Christmas - but don't know what will be best.
it will be in a south facing room with a lot of sun. I read that led tvs are our best bet - is this true? And the sales person said that Sharp and Samsung are brighter and will have better output/brightness - is this true?
Would like to hear from users who have tvs that are in sunny rooms with the sun coming in from the wall next to the tv.

many thanks.

A: No the "Dynamic" setting is just one of the picture modes on all the nicer Samsung TV's. It comes standard with options like "normal" "cinema" etc.

**Q: Sanus tv mount** *(in Electronics)*

Got this mount for $20. Is missing cross bars. Seems to me any pipe will work as long as it is around 1" Dia? M
aybe 1.25"? How about galvanized pipe?

A: might be tough with galvanized... it needs to slide in. That is a nice mount and it's rotten expensive... You might try calling Sanus and asking for the part. I'm a dealer and have always found them to be pretty easy to deal with.
