I just moved into a studio with a "decent" size floorplan for Manhattan standards. I brought my existing furniture with me and bought some new furtniture that I thought would look good. But its too big. Please help me. Here's the floorplan my 76" sofa faces the 95" wall. I bought a 5x8 rug that I fell in love with that I thought would fit well under the sofa but it looks gigantic. Right? Should I return the rug? If yes, what kind of a rug would look good there? Also, I bought a little black nailhead bench (that has the flower standing on it) that I thought would look nice in the corner by the TV, but it just swallows up the space. Should I return it and keep the space empty? here's a photo of the "passageway" showing how close the rug cuts in on the right side. On the left side (as visible in the pic above), the rug is completely under the heating unit. secondly, the desk that I bought, which is 47"x23" and faces the 63" window is too big. I need a desk and I don't know what to do. If I remove the rug, I can move the sofa toward the TV a bit, but still, it doesn't alleviate the problem of the desk just simply being too long. I also need to get a new source of light, leaning lamp that I have (on the right in the photo below), looks too big as well. I'm thinking of getting a sconce and attaching it to the wall to the left of the TV. Thank you guys for reading! Please help! A: Hi E...your dilemma is the result of a very common approach to decorating, i.e., "see space, fill space with something you like, and somehow achieve less than optimal result". This situation is significantly exacerbated in small, multi-function spaces like yours. You can resolve many of your issues by taking my tried and true approach (see prior commentary) to go up to 30,000 feet and consider function first and then descend to make more granular decisions. In this case, there is an entire end of furniture design specifically focused upon "undersized" pieces for undersized spaces. Sadly NYC spaces simply can't easily use normal size furniture (and even furnishings) but that simply goes with the territory. As well, setting up a space like this as though it was a suburban home is simply not possible. More things need to be wall mounted (TV, etc.) to provide more floor space. Consider it this way...you are living in some of the most expensive real estate in the world...treat your floor space accordingly. You are 100% correct regarding the rug...even though you like the look and feel of the rug in this area you either need to get a larger rug to fill the entire area or go much smaller. In terms of the desk it would be best in a space like this to have extending work surfaces that collapse when not in use rather than a large static surface. Lose as much of the floor based pieces like the corner table you mentioned and the white shelving piece in the opposite corner and move up to wall mounted items. Lastly, the idea of a screen or room divider between the bed and couch has a lot of merit. Very best of luck with your "life in the big city" space. It seems unnecessary to me and I would like to remove it. any suggestions on how to make the space look like I didn't just remove a door? A: Hi Judy...this one is easier than you think...answer YES! In fact I did it in my own home. I took my door off and made a cabinet rather than a closet. Yes I ended up with partial doors but I also got drawers where I wanted them, open shelving where I wanted it, and doors where I wanted doors. The look is exactly what I want and the organization is significantly better, and the function is amazing. The front is flush with the door frame so it looks like it was always there and designed with the original space. If you want to change color to give it more notice feel free. I have made some changes, but would like ideas to transform it, with out spending a fortune. Would love new furniture and window treatments. I would really appreciate any ideas. A: Hi Rina, let me try to help you solve this issue, create some additional space and maybe even save you some money in the process. One of the strongest trends I see in my practice is removing furniture from bedrooms and using space in the closet that may not be efficiently utilized. Closets now incorporate drawers/dressers, mirrors, hampers, and lots of other features. In your specific case you could get rid of at least 1-3 pieces and capture more space in the bedroom (and buy less furniture when and if you make that move). One warning though, one of the most common mistakes I see homeowners make is when they see open space they feel compelled to fill it. In this bedroom it would be nice to get some additional open space. In fact, if you slide the bed a little left you might be able to create a more comfortable space for your dressing table. This would also allow you a larger number of window treatment options. If you you remove the large dresser you could leave it open or create a very shallow media center on the newly open space on the right wall. When It comes to window treatments I can only advise you to maintain the light you have in this space whatever you do...it's really nice. In this case is was simply shelving but our systems allow for easy conversion to hanging sections. This could easily be a triple hang for little person clothing. Beautiful isn't it? I use a similar design in Mud Rooms as well. In either case you can use a double stack of drawers too of course depending upon what's being stored. One of our Ft. There will eventually be a large beige Bokhara sitting under the furniture (fully under with all legs on), and then a small baby grand piano in front of the bay window. I feel like the painting is overwhelming and the rug and piano are just going to make it worse. Here's a wide shot so you can see the wall between the hallway and living room is removed...please disregard the awkward beam! Thoughts? A: Hi Jennifer...love the room...love the art...don't love the art over the fireplace though. Classic case of "tail wagging dog". The fact that you are asking the question clearly says that your own sense is that it is at the very least "unbalanced"...which it is. In this case it's simple geometry and your own eye is telling you something's not quite correct. The colors contained in the art are not really that great a compliment to the beautiful pieces and arrangement that you have accomplished in this space either. In my opinion you should hunt down a better piece and let your own eye tell you whether it's right or not...my sense is that you know that this attempt didn't produce the right look.
