An ordinary bookshelf simply wouldn't suit the materials or fit the space. When I brought my relatively vague idea for this piece to The Wood Studio, Elias immediately intuited my aesthetic goal for it while suggesting how it could be realized (with a few brilliant modifications) in the material world. He made me feel like a creative collaborator on the project -- rather than a mere client -- which made the whole process much more enjoyable than the usual business of ordering furniture. Knowing my admiration for Japanese cabinetry, he came up with an elegantly simple design worthy of a temple in Kyoto. He first built two long rectangular boxes. Setting them on their side so that their interiors function as shelves for graphic novels while their top surfaces form a display counter for comic books (housed in open file boxes), he raised the two units about three feet off the floor on oak supporting structures which provide additional storage space for oversized items. He then cantilevered the boxes over the outer edges of the supports so that my large collection (which is fairly weighty) seems to float along the passageway. To enhance this effect, he ebonized the boxes with India ink and polished them with beeswax while the supports retained their natural colour (pale yellow) thanks to a spare application of linseed oil. The effect is truly stunning.
