## Community Q&A

**Q: Kitchen addition and renovation question** *(in Design Dilemma)*

I am doing a small addition to my kitchen/dining room. We are opening up the wall between the two rooms and going out into my backyard. The first design is a 4 ft addition across both rooms and the second is a 7 ft addition for the kitchen and 5 ft for the dining room.  I know the difference in cost for the addition is not much going the few extra feet, but I sort of prefer the smaller addition because the room feels like a nice size to me. With the smaller addition the dimension will be 17x25 across both rooms. My husband things the island needs to be oriented the other way. In order to do that and keep a 7 ft island the kitchen needs to be at least 19-20 feet, hence the second option. It just seems so big a space to me.  I would love an opinion about the island and whether is=t is a design no no to face the sink inmy first drawing? Thanks so much.

A: Based upon your plan sketches, I recommend the larger addition with the longer island orientated to face the dining room.  This layout offers a good termination for the cabinetry at the exterior sink wall, as well as great circulation around the island and better out of the way seating at the island.  Of course, with any addition the exterior of the house needs to be considered.  Good luck with your project!

**Q: Are 8 foot doors too high for a ranch house with 10 foot ceilings?** *(in Building a Home)*

I finally went to a window/ door showroom and saw actual 8 foot doors. They seem freakishly tall. Thoughts? Considering dropping to 7 foot doors with 10 foot ceilings.

A: If your interior ceiling height is 10'-0", then 8'-0" doors will be well proportioned for the space.

**Q: height for top of vessel sink in bathroom?** *(in Design Dilemma)*

I'm building my own vanity for my master bathroom. it will have tow 6" (most likely) vessel sinks on it.  I'm finding varied results when googling.  what height would you recommend the top of the counter bee? currently it's 36" but I could chop the legs a little.

of course, I'm 6'6" and my partner is closer to 5'4"ish

A: For a shared bathroom vanity, I recommend the top of the counter (or in this case the top of the sinks) to be 36" above the finish floor.  You may want to consider standard or undermount sinks on a master vanity, which would give you more usable counter space.  Good luck with your project!

**Q: Backsplash height dilemma** *(in Design Dilemma)*

Hello - I am writing in requesting some advice on how high to take my back-splash - this is a modern condo layout with the kitchen along a back wall with a big island in front of it. The layout is below - and then other photo are the selections I have made - Calacatta Laza by MSI for the counter-tops - island will have mitered waterfall edge, the wood floors, paint colors, cabinet style (actual cabinet style will be a tight reveal/frameless, but this color is correct - with gold toned hardware), and the back-splash is a marble hatch. I am torn on how high to take the back-splash - up to the bottom of the hood vent , to the top of the cabinets, or all the way up to the ceiling? Any and all advice on any component is much appreciated!!

A: I recommend installing the backsplash wall tile to the bottom of the hood.  Under the cabinets, you could either have a 6" high backsplash (band of tile with a pencil tile trim), or take the tile to the bottom of the cabinets.  Good luck with your project!
