We would like to start by putting hardwood throughout the house and then redo the kitchen. Need help with a plan to make all areas more open. Also would like suggestions on where to reposition the appliances and sink. All walls other that the wall the fridge is on are non bearing walls. Thank you for any suggestions. A: I like the idea of hardwood throughout. You might want to relocate the sink to the opening/cutout in the wall. That counterspace would be nice for dishes and prep. Plus the view would be better than the corner. From there, replace the cabinetry. The attached picture could work really well as a template for inspiration. We completely gutted the kitchen and we're down to the studs. I have chosen a cabinet style - basic beaded inset and we will be doing it in dark stained birch (like the rest of the woodwork in the house - It's absolutely gorgeous!). Anyway, I'm trying to decide on looks for pulling it all together. My taste is pretty specific - it's not head-on ornate traditional, but it's not contemporary either - I guess I would put myself in a transitional spot. I have ordered new stainless steel appliances, stainless apron front sink. and stainless 2-handle bridge faucet. I was thinking of going with pewter finish cabinet hardware - maybe hammered. I am unsure about what to do with light fixtures. I have two different fixture ideas that will give it different looks, but I like both of them. For the floors, I really like the look of vinyl hardwood - I think it adds warmth, but I am also open to a stone look (but very specific one - I only like the one I have attached.) Good luck! **Q: Kitchen cosmetic upgrade** *(in Design Dilemma)* Hi all - we just purchased a new town home and would like to upgrade the appliances in the kitchen to smudge proof stainless (or stainless-like) steel. That's as far as we've gotten with looks. But now on closer inspection, can we jazz up the kitchen with a back splash without breaking the bank? If so - any ideas on design (where to place it, thickness, color, etc)? This is our first home and no idea where to start, but we will have a full month or two before we move in so we are trying to take advantage. The room is a wide open concept to the dining and living room (one very large room) with darker wood furniture than the cabinets (dining table, coffee table, end tables, etc), so perhaps a backsplash tile with darker tones can make the darker wood in the dining room and living room tie together to the lighter shade of the kitchen cabinets and granite. The rooms are empty now with hardwood floors, so the main design element can start with the kitchen. We would like to change the wall color as well, so we thought a backsplash idea would be a good place to start A: Our diamond Liberty tile would look great in this kitchen, especially with the stainless appliances. Do they give off lots light???? We removed a wall between the livingroom and kitchen. How would it look to paint the livingroom a light gray and the back kitchen wall and between cabinets a brick red and accent the livingroon with the same color red curtains. A: I'd say yes to painting the kitchen and living room a lighter shade of grey to start. From there, I wouldn't say no to the idea of brick red paint for the cabinets, but I'd limit it to the wall cabinets. I'd paint the base cabinets a dark grey. You should have the cabinetry done by a professional though; here is a bit on cabinet refacing that could be helpful- http://www.granitetransformations.com/southjersey/cabinet-refacing-page/ I'd install white granite counters and a white subway tile backsplash. We have a good selection there as well. The recessed lighting (cans) is definitely the way to go. They provide great lighting. Your electrician should be competent in this area, but I'd recommend 5-6 for the kitchen. Typically they'll install a switch for managing the lighting level as well. Good luck! **Q: Light vs Dark granite** *(in Design Dilemma)* Trying to decide whether to go with light stone (White Galaxy) or dark Stone (Blue Night) in remodeled kitchen. The appliances are stainless steel. The floor is wood oak. The custom cabinets are an off-white upper (Navajo White) with walnut bottoms. There is also a 60in by 30in table that will have a granite top. White seems safer choice with dark granite table top. But wondering if the dark stone will spice up the current color scheme. I am thankful for any suggestions. A: I'd recommend going with a darker stone for contrast. Unless you want a completely airy light feel, the dark would work well with your design. Something like our Grigio Dolomite would look well if you don't want to go too dark. You can see it here- http://www.granitetransformations.com/southjersey/products/granite- countertops/colors/ Hope this helps, good luck! **Q: Master bath remodel - thinking of not having a tub** *(in Design Dilemma)* Our master bath is not huge, its more like a long rectangle (10ft long x 5ft wide) and we are working on how to best use the space. We are taking the bathroom down to the studs so we can re-configure it any way we want. One idea is the modern look of the wet dry bathroom with the tub in the shower area, but I am wondering how practical that really is? And is it weird to be in the shower while using the tub? Cleaning? The other idea is to have a beautiful shower area that is larger without having a tub. The house has two other full bathrooms with tubs in it already, so its not like there won't be a bathtub in the house. We plan to stay in the house for some time but thinking down the road will it affect re-sale not having a master tub? A: I think a larger area with a walk-in shower would be really nice. You could have two separate shower heads in that space. Since you have two other bathrooms with tubs, this idea makes more sense to me. You could tile the entire area, making it easy to clean as well.
