## Community Q&A

**Q: Wooly Blue Curls - Trichostema lanatum** *(in California Gardening)*

I had visitors yesterday day and I wanted to show off my beautiful Wooly Blue Curls in full flower to them. Instead I saw a completely wilted plant and today it is an even more obvious goner. How do you all keep rhis plant alive?
i bought it in a five gallon container last October at an end of year sale and overwintered it in the container. I planted it out in May and watered it about weekly. I think I watered it just before this heat wave. Maybe that was a mistake.

A: they take quite a long time to root. i use rooting hormone \#2 and 3 with equal success - i still lose a fair amount of the cuttings to fungus before they root. i always take cuttings in winter - at the first flush of new growth. i get about 50-60% take at that time.

**Q: Lessingia filaginifolia anybody?** *(in California Gardening)*

I'd like to hear from anyone with this plant. I've never actually seen it in a garden but I like the look in pictures and I can get it locally. My main question is if it could thrive with only morning sun.

A: i don't know - 2-3 yrs, maybe?

**Q: What are these poppies?** *(in California Gardening)*

I just found these poppies with pointed petals in my garden in SoCal. Never seen any like them; they look to me like some kind of Eschscholzia californica, maybe a mutation or a cross with some other poppy. Does anyone know what they are?

A: Cal poppies can come in many different shapes. there are quite a few different species, but you can tell those by whether they have a hypanthium or not. that is the ring under the petals which you can see in the lower left of this photo. it's present in this one, so it is the common cal poppy. check out the petals on this one i found near livermore:

**Q: Philadelphus lewisii. California native Wild Mock Orange.** *(in California Gardening)*

Philadelphus lewisii. California native Wild Mock Orange.

Does anyone here grow it? Have photos? Real garden experiences? Tips, tricks, warnings? Thank you!

A: here's a pic of a flore pleno one at Tilden Bot Garden in Berkeley.

**Q: California Lupines...** *(in California Gardening)*

Near Niles Canyon.

A: These are the annual Lupinus microcarpus densiflorus. they can be very robust and gorgeous! very easy to grow from seed. here's pics of some i planted in a garden i did in San Ramon.

**Q: Narrow-leaf milkweed** *(in California Gardening)*

I bought three plants last week, about 3" tall. I've read they aren't really a specimen plant & they can get a little weedy. Anyone grow these & can tell me how you use them in the garden? I mainly want to provide monarch habitat and hope to save & spread seeds to other areas of the yard that are sunny but not regularly irrigated.

A: it's still pretty early for the monarchs.
