## Community Q&A

**Q: What a dreamy bathroom, great, great job.** *(in Photo Questions)*

What type of flooring is this, difficult to see clearly in photo. Are there any more photos of this room from angles, looks so interesting.

A: Thanks for the wonderful feedback! This is the only pro photo we have of the room, but you can send an email to nikki@carpetstudio.ca and I would be happy to share some photos we took on a site visit.

**Q: Is this tile or vinyl?** *(in Photo Questions)*

A: Hello! This is actually both! It is a vinyl tile. While this colour is no longer available, you can find lots of great new vinyl tiles in store.

**Q: Love this tile. What tile is it and where can I get it? Thank you** *(in Photo Questions)*

A: We love this tile too! It is from Casa Roma. The collection is called the Spatolato and the colour is Grigio.

**Q: Porcelain tile coming loose from cement floor** *(in Flooring)*

I recently did a total renovation in an apartment in a high rise building. I used very high end materials and a well-known contractor with a good reputation. There was a tile floor which he removed and installed a larger Porcelanosa tile. Now some of the tiles developed a "hollow" sound and the grout is cracking out. The whole tile isn't loose, but only in spots. What do I do? Can this be fixed? Will the tile eventually break? Apparently either the bond was broken or the tile was not installed correctly. Whose responsibility is this?

A: Seeing as you are in a high rise, I can't imagine too much movement at this point is causing the tile to become loose. If it sounds hollow, I would bet there wasn't enough thinset on the back of the tile (referred to as back buttering) before they laid it. I would call the flooring guys to come out and take a look at it.

**Q: should marble looking tile veins lean in the same direction?** *(in Flooring)*

A: We always recommended doing a "random" installation. This is a picture of real marble, it looks better mixed up and much more natural that way. With porcelain tile, there are only going to be so many unique tiles until you get a repeat, and that will make it glaringly obvious it isn't real stone to have that line up.

**Q: Stair runner on prefinished laminate stair treads?** *(in Flooring)*

Hello...I'm looking for some advice on having a carpet stair runner installed on laminate stair treads. The stairs are very pretty but they are slippery. I want to have a stair runner installed professionally but two carpet stores have told me they can not install the runner on the laminate treads because they do not know how the staples will hold or if the stair tread will crack. I have found a small/local flooring installation company willing to install the runner but I worry about the potential issues mentioned above. I don't mind "ruining" the look of the stairs under the runner but I want it to hold and not effect the stability of the stair. The risers are MDF. The carpet I've selected for the runner is a nylon loop. I've included a picture for a visual. Advice? Thanks!

A: Best solution would be to remove the laminate nosings and replace with a hardwood nosing, and install the carpet runner inset. That would save costs on the nosings- as they are typically 6' long, if you are only installing 6-8" on either side of the carpet runner you could potentially do 4-6 stairs with one piece.
