**Q: need landscape advice** *(in Polls)*

Just removed a large sago palm from this poolside bed. Thinking about a large container plant (perhaps on a pedestal with something cascading off the sides?) surrounded by ferns and flowering perennials. Any suggestions?

A: I'm not sure of the dimensions of the bed you have but it looks like it may be big enough for one of our garden fountains. 

I did this mock-up using our Esplanade Fountain and some white azalea bushes to give you an idea of how to incorporate both the greenery and a water feature together. 



We also have a two-tier version of this fountain and it can come in several other colors to better complement your home and the greenery you decide on. 



I also included some gravel to go around the greenery and as a foundation for the fountain.

**Q: Improving curb appeal and facade of Florida Spanish house** *(in Landscape Design)*

Hi all!

I've recently purchased a very cool Spanish hacienda courtyard home. The architecture is very unique compared to typical Florida Spanish homes with a traditional pool courtyard.

But the front leaves a lot to be desired to me. Since the photo, I've already started working on better landscaping and planning to dig up bricks in middle of drive and put in a bed anchored by a large date palm to give a Med feel and soften up the massive concrete drive.

I am looking for ideas on how else to add curb appeal and improve upon the facade. Both minor (paint exterior white? add trim around garage doors and windows?) and major improvements (modify roofline to add interest somehow?)...open to any ideas.

For context, this is about a $900k home and I would like to over next 2 to 3 years bring that value up about ~$200k (aside from market changes). Meaning I want the home to appear luxurious and upscale from the exterior, at least when I am done with remodeling. We will hire an architect but would love some ideas or pictures if any come to mind!

A: One thing that automatically jumps out to me would be to add a large outdoor fountain into that center section in front of your house. Estate-style fountains are a great way to boost the curb appeal and value of a home. 

Fountains like the Charleston in Basin or the Cavalli Fountain with Fiore Pond are great options for front yard fountains.

**Q: Please Help Dress My Foyer** *(in Home Decorating)*

Hi all! 
Since moving into our home (5 yrs ago) we've made a ton of updates. In our foyer, we chose fresh paint colors, installed new slate herringbone floors, installed new light fixtures, added the plantation shutters on the sidelights and refinished all our floors. 

I still love all the updates we made, but I have these HUGE empty foyer walls that seem like a miss to me. I'm totally stuck. I don't want to junk it up, but it seems pretty undone leaving the walls so blank.

A: You have such a beautiful foyer! An indoor wall fountain would be an awesome addition. It would definitely be a talking point when people enter, and the soothing sounds of the water would be really welcoming. Because they are made for indoors, you wouldn't need to worry about splash or spill. 

Below are a couple of vertical units with mirrored surfaces that would look nice but you could also do a natural stone and have it be stunning as well.

**Q: Gas fireplace insert confusion!** *(in Fireplaces)*

Hi! Want to put a direct vent (I think) gas fireplace insert in an existing masonry (wood burning) fireplace. Goals for the project:
1\. Increase warmth in a fairly small living room during winter months
2\. decrease smells and draft from existing wood burning fireplace... it’s original to our home built in 1978. We’ve had it cleaned and inspected every year for the past 3 years that we’ve owned the home, but can’t escape the draft and smell in summer and winter months. 
3\. have a sealed fire without concerns for polluting or decreasing our indoor air quality 

QUESTIONS:
1\. What is the best way to install a direct vent gas insert to preserve indoor air quality? Some install instructions call for a b-vent which I thought wasn’t good for IAQ. 
2\. Are there good brands/manufacturers that people have had good experiences with? Or brands to stay away from?

A: Can you explain why you are wanting to go with a gas fireplace? If you are wanting to decrease smells and smoke, the best option would actually be a ventless unit like an ethanol or electric fireplace insert. Ethanol fuel is clean burning and does not produce soot. You do have to add the fuel to the unit. Electric fireplaces will produce a good amount of heat and there are a lot of really great options now that look very realistic. Both options should allow you to close off your vent to prevent drafts. 

An electric unit like the Dimplex 33" Deluxe Built-In Firebox or the Dimplex 28" Plug-in Electric Firebox with Realogs are just a couple of examples. However, without knowing the exact dimensions or seeing a picture of your space, it is hard to gauge what would work best. What dimensions are you working with for this project?

Do we put something on the walls next to the fire place? To mirrors or framed pictures. Any ideas how to make it look less sparse?

Just decluttered our Home Office for optimum productivity.  Now I am stuck with a blank wall and unsure where to start.  I had some art and shelving on it but took down.  Thinking temp paper maybe? Kinda nervous to go out on a limb and post but here goes...
