I have little to no experience with tile work so we hired The Countertop Shop to replace the tile in our bathrooms and replace the countertops in the kitchen and bathrooms. They were very helpful, friendly, and patient as we tried to figure out our style. They were also very willing to work with us by doing one bath at a time so we would not go without a bathroom. At first I was very happy with the work. The counter tops in the kitchen and bathrooms were and are still great. I have had no problems with them. The tile in the bathrooms, not so much. They looked good at first but, like I said, this is not something I have any experience with. Then I started to notice things that weren’t right. After studying the work for a month, I noticed a few things that were wrong; holes in the grout, tiles that weren’t straight or flush, different colored caulk right next to each other. They seemed like minor things so I called to tell them. I called at least once a week for several months, telling them about the mistakes I saw. It was frustrating because they would tell me how sorry they were and that they would get someone over to look at and fix any issues. Time passed, about 3 months. During this time I noticed more and more things that didn’t seem right. I kept calling and they kept telling me the same thing, and no one came over. I finally called and complained and asked if they could send someone different over to look at this (like a quality control check, which every good company I’ve worked with has done). A few weeks after someone (the one guy who did 95% of the job by himself) finally came over, unannounced, to look at the issues. What through me for a loop was that he was asking me what to fix. I told him several times that there were many issues and he kept insisting that I tell him exactly what to fix. Really? I should have just kicked him out right then but I was just hopping for all of this to be over. I showed him everything and he got to work. He did not fix everything I pointed out. He was there for a few hours that day and a few hours the next. There are still things that are not finished. I ended up calling them a few more times with no progress. At this point I am just to disappointed to even want them to finish the job, past experience tells me that it will just be the same. It has now been over a year. I was hoping for a good experience to teach me what to look for in tile installers. I got experience, it just didn’t turn out the way I had expected. No wonder my bathrooms aren’t on their website. I wish I could get my money back because this does not seem like $12K worth of good, quality workmanship. Here is a list of the problems: > 1.Tiles are consistently not flush. > 2.Grout was not properly or completely wiped off of the tiles. > 3.Holes in grout were never filled. > 4.Bull nose is not the same size in all areas. > 5.Bull nose seams do not match up; very visible. > 6.Mortar overflowing through the grout and, in some places, stuck to the tile. Mostly only visible when wet. > 7.Edge tile in master bath does not match the edge tile in the hall bath. > 8.Different color grout used in parts of each bathroom. > 9.Different color caulk used in parts of each bathroom. > 10.Poor quality caulk used in showers. Started coming apart after a couple of months. > 11.Replaced drywall with thinner sheet and then had a ¼” gap filled with grout. > 12.There is a hole visible to the side of the shower handle. I kept saying I wanted it fixed and the installer just pushed the handle and said,” there, you can barely notice it”. Yes, and break the plumbing as well. Thanks for that. > 13.Tiles were NOT pulled from multiple boxes and mixed. The same exact tiles are clearly seen stacked next to each other. > 14.Shower shelf (made from counter material) had large chip in it WHEN IT WAS INSTALLED. The installer can back and filled it in but it is still visible. > 15.Some tiles were cut with a dull blade.
