## Community Q&A

**Q: Need help deciding on the size of chandelier** *(in Lighting)*

I'm looking for a chandelier, but I'm lost on what I need to be looking for in relation to size. My living room is 19x18 and I have 25' ceilings. I'm looking for something to go in the center peak of the room. The sizes I'm seeing most are 62" or 72" in diameter. Are these too big? Also how do I figure out how low it should hang? Thank you for your help.

A: I am not sure if you have the capabilities to do so, but on jobs that we specify lighting fixtures like this we have the ability to size it in our drawing software. But often times it always helps to make a template out of something handy (1:1 in the same size) and try to hang it at different heights to see what works for you!

**Q: Boring entertainment corner** *(in Home Decorating)*

Can you make this luxuriously better?

A: have the wall millwork go all the way to the ceiling. It will make the room feel taller and frame the TV in appropriately.

**Q: Kitchen Reno suggestions** *(in Buying and Selling Homes)*

My husband and I have made an offer on this home. It was built in 2009 and the interior is dated. However, it has a basement and lovely outdoor/pool area. We had recently renovated our home after a tree fell on it so I’m definitely going to have to make changes to make this home what I want. Any Ideas on how to update this kitchen? The wall with the refrigerator is somewhat load bearing. The living area is on the other side of that wall.

A: I love that you’re already thinking about how to make this home truly yours, it sounds like it has great bones with the basement and outdoor space. Kitchens from the late 2000s often feel dated because of the heavy cabinetry, darker granite, and more compartmentalized layouts, but there are some really effective ways to modernize it.
If removing the wall with the refrigerator isn’t an option due to structural constraints, you could still rework that elevation to feel more open and intentional. Consider:

Lighter finishes: Swapping dark cabinets for a lighter wood tone or painted finish, paired with a warm quartz or natural stone countertop, will instantly brighten and modernize the space.
Re-imagined refrigerator wall: Even if the wall stays, you could integrate it with tall pantry storage, hidden appliance garages, or a built-in fridge with matching cabinetry so it feels cohesive rather than like a divider.
Opening pass-throughs: Instead of taking the wall down entirely, creating a large cased opening or adding a serving window to the living area could give you connection without compromising structure.
Updated lighting: Recessed LED lights and statement pendants over an island can do a lot to refresh the overall look.
Hardware + backsplash: Clean-lined hardware and a fresh backsplash (like handmade tile or slab stone) can completely change the feel without altering the footprint.

Since you’ve already been through a renovation, you know how impactful even finish-level changes can be. If you’re open to reworking the floor plan, I’d recommend having a designer or architect walk you through options for partial wall removal or adding a beam—sometimes what feels load-bearing can be re-supported in creative ways

**Q: Landscape Architects or Engineers** *(in Landscape Design)*

MCM Rannch Style with outdated courtyard. Many have suggested soing away with it. I do have some drainage and foundational concerns. as you can see in the photo, there is a GIANT old old tree not far from the house. not sure why anyone let this happen, but we did our due diligence and had it checked out for stability and damage control as far as the foundation. Tree professional advised us to maintain the hwalth of the tree to keep it healthy while also discouraging durther growth. They also assured us that the only concern he had about the tree with regard to the foundation was if it died and the root system died. As is, should be fine.
Now…our yard is fairly flat with a slight slope TOWARD the house. My instinct tells me that we should add dirt to raise the area in the courtyard to create more of a slope away from the house and toward the street. BUT…as you can see with the existing courtyard situation, we don't have room to go higher because we would be way over the foundation line. Ideas ir suggestions?

A: consult with an arborist to see about those tree roots and a structural engineer about how it may impact your foundation. Also consider your drainage under this deck so you can help mitigate any moisture alongside the house.

**Q: Fireplace with Mantle or without** *(in Polls)*

I'm trying to determine whether or not I should do a mantle on the below design. Material for the mantle and hearth is Pietra gray and the tile behind is vein cut limestone, and powder coated steel for the chase/chimney. Any other thoughts on the design are welcome...thanks in advance.

A: Mantle over the fireplace would look good! Keep the shelves open!

**Q: Need help with blank wall with only a wall mount TV** *(in Design Dilemma)*

I need help with a blank wall that only has a wall mount TV on it and I want to hang two pictures beside it that are approx 24x28 each. I feel it needs some kind of enhancements because it is very plain with just the TV. So I have two paintings that I would like to mount on that same wall, how should it be done.

A: A console below would be great. This leaves it flexible to adjust your furniture if you want to change it out at a later date!
