**★ — Donna Mensah, Dec. 2021**

> Hired Christopher Kyle Huber, operating as Huber construction company to build a deck in August 2021. Initially, things seemed to be moving along. Chris was very responsive to my inquiries and I felt comfortable working with him. I paid about a 1/3 of the cost for materials upfront that were delivered right away and are still on my lawn. I then paid another 1/3 at what was supposed to be the start of the project about a week later. The problem is that the project didn’t get started, the old deck was demolished, but nothing else happened. Called several times to see why the project wasn’t moving along and was given excuse after excuse. Finally, in November, after being given several start dates for work to begin and no one showing up, I called Chris and told him that I did not have confidence in his ability to complete the project. I was given the excuse that it was hard to find labor and no timeframe for when the project would get started. I decided that was enough and wanted to end the contract. I requested a refund of my money. He said that he would work on it, but never heard back from him. He owes me approximately $10,000! I have filed a lawsuit, but the Sheriff’s Office has been unable to serve him at his business location on Grand Ave in Fox Lake. Please do your due diligence before contracting with this company. Check licensure and not only google the company, but the owner. Do not make the same mistake that I did!

**★ — Ken Becker, Sept. 2021**

> I signed the design contract with Team Huber May 1st. and furnished them with a pdf document that contained our specific house plans with the understanding of working those plans into a format that was acceptable to the village. In order to finalize this permit set of drawings, we needed to decide some final details and this would be combined with the topographical survey and presented as a package with “hard numbers and was to include everything from pulling permits, city review charges, breaking ground costs, to final clean up and walk through, including materials, labor and project management services. “ My involvement was to make a $5000 payment and attend some meetings to work out the many variables and then after this process we would enter into the Construction Contract. Soon after joining Team Huber my wife and I realized that the communication network of doing business here seemed to be broken and reported our specific complaint which was minimized and shrugged off. We attended another meeting asking for status and whether our project was going to fall within budget at which time we received a hastily assembled outline with categories and prices that was $100K or 40% over budget and told that it will all come together once the results of the survey are in.
> An invoice showed up for architect services that were NOT consistent with our project as changes were made to the plans that we already liked and approved of, without our involvement, knowledge or consent. Then we got an invoice for the survey that did finally come about and expected the master plan to soon come together, but it did not follow, the momentum stalled. Here it is after 5 months and we still have not so much as seen the permit set of drawings, Team Huber is insisting we pay the additional invoices before they release the master plan package.
> I had no idea the initial planning and the work of obtaining a permit set of drawings and coming up with a budget would be costing more money and could be so elusive. I dread the thought of building with this contractor as I was expecting to receive something in exchange for my deposit at the signing of the design contract, yet it is being withheld on the premise that the 5K was spent already with the architect. I do not contest the direct cost of the topographical survey but have protested the architects freedom of expression translating into an overcharge. The contactors defense may be feasible on the surface but it is not professional and dubious if true. Team Huber did not honor the terms of their Design Contract with us or handle our objections very well in the process so for this reason I recommend you shop around.

**Comment from Huber Construction:**

> Ken it is unfortunate that you had a bad experience. As I said prior the 5k dollars as specified in the design contract is a deposit. That deposit is used during the design process but does not in any form represent the exact cost of the design process. There are to many variables to be able to do this which is why we do a deposit and a final invoice for any extra costs that are accrued. In your case the architectural costs for a bid set of prints alone was 5k dollars. This has been provided to you and is in your possession. The survey that my company paid for was 950 dollars, if you want this survey then yes we will need to be compensated for the survey we paid for. The final set of drawings for permits stamped and sealed would be released upon final balance due on drawings per the contract with the architectural firm which was also provided to you showing payment schedule. I can not get a product from the architect in final draft stamped and sealed until I provide final payment which you are unwilling to provide. In regards to the budget I provided rough estimates and the cost of building has changed on a weekly basis at some points which is why there is a fluctuation and change in building costs. This was explained as well that they were rough estimates and not final estimates as we needed the bid set of prints to provide final costs based on final design. This was then also provided to you at which point your wife expressed wanting us to provide building to drywall phase so you could complete from that point forward to save on costs, this revised quote was also provided. At no point have I charged you for my staffs time in coordinating pricing with trades or doing material take offs and pricing or communicating with the architect village or any other party involved. I would say that’s a pretty fair deal. I’m sorry that your design and build costs were more then you anticipated but it is not something that is in my control. If you wish to resolve your debts and obtain your survey and final permit prints then you are welcome to do that and you will be provided with the final documents.
