A: As noted in the article: The exterior walls are burned cypress, created using a \[traditional Japanese technique\[(https://www.houzz.com/magazine/yakisugi-ita-is-setting-the-siding-world-on-fire-stsetivw-vs~2323908): Cypress planks are heated with a blowtorch until they turn black, then buffed with a wire brush to remove the charred areas, resulting in heightened graining and a two-tone finish that’s also resistant to weathering.

**Q: Can you tell me what material is used for the porch floor?** *(in Photo Questions)*

A: The entry porch floor and surrounding deck area's are a supported concrete slab with some color pigment added to the concrete mix. You can create many wonderful colors with integral color admixtures and/or stains. I recommend simple geometry for the layout and control joints. Concrete has a unique look to it, like wood and other natural materials, that is not monochromatic like paint on a wall. The finished appearance of concrete will have some variations in it just as piece of finished wood has unique color variations and grain pattern in it.
