Is this a concrete hood?

A: Yes,  I framed it out with bender board and did a very thick skim coat of concrete,polished it, sealed it... It has aged beautifully...

A: the floor is wide white oak, very easy to find, what i did to it is the secret to its original beauty.. I rubbed white paint into areas then sanded through it as well as using dark stain on areas, then sanding through it..very labor intensive...but cheap easy labor Then sealed it with a special sealer used on basketball courts so it didnt yellow over time..

I hate the brick!  Tore the under sized mantle off.  House is an atrium ranch, very open.  I have no idea where to start & stop with color.  The living area is VERY neutral.

A: If you want to keep cost low and impact high, consider painting the brick ( a cool gauzy white) and installing a steel or bronze flange around the inside opening of the firebox, it would modernize and "cleanup" all the brick..you can order these at most firplace shops.
Then change the firebox to glass or fireballs inside and poof...sexy
