I don't really like the "step down" look that people have suggested to me. Do I just end it at the end of the cabinets? End of countertops? Anyone have any other creative ideas? Thank you!! A: You could also do a curve, with the tile cut in a graceful curve to end at the edge of the counter. This is more traditional if that's your look. **Q: Tired of this debate-looking for suggestions...** *(in Design Dilemma)* Ok, Houzz Buddies--here is my issue- I have a friend for whom I have great affection, but every time she visits she looks at me disapprovingly and says, "your home is so lovely, but why do you insist on using contour mats in your bathrooms?" Arrrgghhh! I have eight grandsons, three sons, and one husband who are in and out of this house constantly. I also have 100 year old original hardwood floors. I am sure everyone can perceive my dilemma. Trust me, those rugs are laundered frequently (sandiocd?!!) If this is something that is so déclassé, I am open to suggestions for a remedy. Failing that, I am open to suggestions on how to respond to my friend without telling her to stay the heck out of my bathrooms! A: If you can, why not go to a good carpeting/flooring store and ask them to make a round rug for you, notched to accommodate the toilet base, of a good size that encompasses the toilet. It should be from an indoor/outdoor carpet. It'll be flat, as those types of rugs are, so won't be a trip hazard, it'll be washable (you could even hose it down!) and it'll be attractive. It certainly won't be as inexpensive as your current rug, but you might like it, and your friend, who we must assume is only trying to bring what she perceives as the total loveliness of your home into this bathroom and not being an annoying busybody, will have to come up with other conversational gambits. **Q: Is that a Cascade Coil metal mesh curtain?** *(in Photo Questions)* A: I checked with our Scalamandre rep and it was a Scalamandre fabric of woven silver thread. **Q: moving into an apartment with 1156 sq ft** *(in Design Dilemma)* LR is 14x16 and the only furniture I have now is a 5ft white baby grand piano. Hubby needs a comfortable chair and I need a sofa and how to pull all this altogether. TV will be mounted on the wall. A: Hope the move went well (do they ever?)...for window treatment on the wall with the small window and door to balcony, I'd suggest treating the window and door as one unit, with one treatment spanning them both, which could draw to one side. I usually, especially in a room with 8 foot ceilings, start the curtain at the ceiling line, or below the crown if there is crown molding. Again, in a small-ish room, I'd try to match the window fabric to the wall so that it blends and doesn't jump out at you, becoming part of the architecture of the room rather than a decorative element. A dash of red is energizing in a white/gray/black room, so go for it! Hoping you're loving the new place and your new neighborhood... **Q: Is this rug too plain?** *(in Design Dilemma)* I just got this chenille jute rug from Target for the open floor plan dining area. I'm not wowed by it - would a patterned, more bold rug be too much? (Please excuse the clutter we are just moving in :) ) A: Jessica... Not sure the rug is too plain, but I'm afraid it's way too small. You don't want chairs, when pushed back from the table, to go off the edge of the rug and get caught on the binding. If the rug is new, I bet Target would take it back in exchange for a larger size. Once you're settled in, have a nice centerpiece in a bold color, perhaps a ceramic bowl of lemons or something like that, on the table and let the rug being a "supporting player" in the room...keep the eyes at table top.
