> ZHiFi is awesome! On a personal project, they helped to move a large plasma TV from a living room and install it, along with all the routers and cables needed, in our new garage/teen hangout space. And they did it all in less than a day. We have also worked with them on clients’ larger, more complicated whole house systems. They are professional, clean, on time and reasonably priced.

> I jibed with Lenny from the start. I didn't really get other estimates after I met with him. At first after the job was done I was a bit frustrated that it truly wasn't "complete." But the fact is I didn't have all the components I needed when they started, and once I did, and had incorporated them into the system myself Lenny came by and spent a couple hours dialing in my system. The set up is exactly as it was promised and I'd use him again for sure. He went the extra mile.

> My husband and I needed to update our media system (Music, TV and WiFi). Acting upon a great recommendation, we contacted Lenny Langford at ZHiFi. And we are so glad we did!
>
> Lenny took our existing system and did a complete overhaul. He was professional, punctual, and attentive. He asked questions and really fine tuned our system to meet our needs.
>
> We now have an updated, state-of-the-art system that we love! Lenny patiently taught us how to use our new system, walked us through it. He also told us we could call him with any questions, concerns, etc... I am happy to say we have not had to call him at all!

## Community Q&A

**Q: New media wall** *(in Photo Questions)*

Do you guys do the cabinets and the other woodwork too?

A: We can have them built for you. These particular ones were built out of Bamboo.

**Q: 12'x18' Home Theater Design Help Please** *(in Design Dilemma)*

I plan to construct a home theater with this 12'x18' room. Would like to have one row (3 seater) of seating and a bar counter behind it. And maybe a single seater sofa at the side. Also, I would like to have columns build in to house the surround speakers (dont know is it possible with the given room size). Should the speakers be hidden or placed outside.

Anyone would kindly advice on the appropriate projector screen size, distance to sofa, equipment rack placement, projector placement.

The room has a attached balcony which is accessible with a glass sliding door.. Do u think it should be removed and replaced with a solid door instead to improve sound insulation.

Your help will be appreciated.
Thanks!!!

A: Given your room width, You might want to consider installing in-wall surround speakers. There are plenty of manufacturers that make high quality in-walls. Hiding them is more of an aesthetic preference of yours. If you hide them in columns, that will take away room width; in a not so wide room.

Screen size sort of depends on what aspect ratio you're looking to do? 16:9 or 2.40:1. You can probably get away with a 10' wide screen in either aspect. Projector/lens throw ratio is also contingent on the screen size and lens ratio.

Viewing distance also depends on your screen size.

Ideally an equipment rack should be placed outside of the room. Equipment racks produce heat. To make sure you don't have hardware failure from said heat, you need to ventilate the equipment. Using fans in the rack to ventilate is fine, but that produces noise which you don't want in your theater; hence place the rack outside of the room. If the rack must be in the room, there are other ways to cool it with ducting systems. If in the room, you don't want the rack to be visible from your viewing angle. Equipment in racks typically have a bunch of little LED lights which can 1) be distracting when you're watching a movie & 2) produce ambient light which will detract from your movie image.

As far as sound is concerned, you want to try to eliminate as many hard surfaces as you can in a theater. So yes, I would try to get rid of as much glass as possible in the room. Not to mention, glass reflects light; which again creates ambient light and detracts from your image quality. Darker rooms are ideal.

Hope this helps getting you started. If you need help we offer theater design services. And depending on location, install services...

**Q: tv and surround sound** *(in Design Dilemma)*

Thoughts please...we are going to be redoing the corner fireplace in the spring and cutting, tiling and painting the adjacent wall with the tv I am wondering everyones thoughts on surround systems. Currently we have a too small tv stand for the tv and these awful looking tall surround sound speakers. Would it be better to have custom cabinetry done that would incorporate/hide these monsters or have a new surround system built into the walls and a new tv stand? Pro/cons for both?

A: Where space is limited we like to install custom soundbars that are made the exact width of a television. These LCR soundbars take the place of your typical (left, center, right) speaker configuration. We have a few of them in our Houzz projects if you want to see an example.

**Q: Home automation** *(in Design Dilemma)*

What is the concept .

A: To be able to control all the subsystems in a residence (Audio, Video, Lighting, HVAC, Shades, Locks, Security, Pool, etc), from an easy to use and intuitive interface (iPad, iPhone, Android, Handheld remote, In-Wall Touchpanel, In-Wall Keypad).

**Q: What's on your home automation wish list?** *(in Design Dilemma)*

We are embarking on a major renovation project which will encompass pretty much the whole house. Making our wish list now. We love our Nest and I am wondering what other home automation items we might consider?
I don't know if they make this but I was thinking it would be great to have motorized bedroom blinds that are synced with your alarm clock/sleep cycle app. I..e., quietly raise the blinds to let in light a little before you are supposed to wake up.
Other ideas?

A: Controlling window shades is definitely possible. Centralizing all of the equipment in a house is probably the number 1 thing I'd like to see clients do. It creates the cleanest aesthetic, where you don't have boxes in every room. Being able to control all the subsystems in a house (audio, video, lighting, hvac, shades, door locks, security, pool, etc) from a single interface makes life a lot easier. Control4 is one brand of Home Automation. There are others like Crestron, Lutron, Savant that work just as well. Best of luck with your home automation project!

**Q: Home automation system?** *(in Other)*

We've built a new house in an 'ultra-fi' neighborhood. The house is almost ready & it's got all the pre-wiring for full house automation. But the RFI guy came out yesterday & wants $17,000 to create a fully automated experience?!? Can that be right? We'll say no to a lot of it - no locks, lighting, pool control, etc. but it still winds up at $7K!

We want to put the audio/video stuff in a media closet & control it from a universal remote - via IR presumably. (TV, Direct TV, Apple TV, blue ray, etc) - 3 rooms w/surround sound + tv's. We also want to control the thermostat & access our security cameras.

Has anyone done this & with what products? I see Hive, Clare, Creston, RFI, Vera - but I see no pricing. Anyone used these? Are there others I should look at? Should we give up this idea??? (Maybe the tech isn't there yet?)

A: As others have said previously, it's hard to tell what you were quoted for. But $7,000 probably won't do a whole lot for an entire home automation system. Doesn't matter if it's Control4, Crestron, RTI, Savant, Total Home etc. 3 televisions can cost that much. That being said, to FULLY automate a new construction house in Southern California (and do it properly) "might" cost around 10% (minimum) of a construction budget. That's not to say you can't do AV, Lighting and HVAC for much cheaper, but that's a general rule of thumb we try to explain to clients. The last thing we want to do is set false expectations with our clients.
