## About

### Houzz Badges

- 1,000 Ideabook Saves

Peter Cohan Architect is an architecture design practice in Seattle, Washington that specializes in new residences, additions and renovations. I believe that it takes strong ideas to turn the often contradictory requirements of a design project into a whole that is greater than the sum of its parts. These are the core principles of my practice:

Architecture should reflect the lives of its users and be shaped by their emotional and intellectual needs - as well as their physical ones.

Architecture is part of a larger physical and cultural context. and should respond to that context deliberately, using natural resources and materials responsibly.

Architecture has a wholeness - every detail should relate to the whole in a way that tells a complete story.

Architecture has the ability to transform the way we see the world - to clarify, surprise and delight.

**★★★★★ — Quantum Windows & Doors, Sept. 2015**

> It is with pleasure that we recommend Peter Cohan, one of Seattle's greatest architectural minds. Peter chose our windows and doors for Cedar Park House and we are highly impressed with the extent to which he challenged the function and beauty of our products.

## Selected projects

- [San Juan Island House](https://www.houzz.com/hznb/projects/san-juan-island-house-pj-vj~1318576)
  - Location: Not specified
  - Photos: 12
  - Description: This addition and renovation of an house built on San Juan Island in the 1960s takes advantage of its western orientation and an expansive view of the Haro Straight and Vancouver Island framed by mature madrona trees. Perched on a steep bank over prime orca whale habitat the house opens up dramatically to the sights, sounds and smells of the marine waters below.
- [Fleischauer Residence](https://www.houzz.com/hznb/projects/fleischauer-residence-pj-vj~1187539)
  - Location: Not specified
  - Photos: 12
  - Description: This addition and complete renovation of an existing house built on a high-bank site in West Seattle retains the Northwest Modern character of the original structure that was built the early 1970s. The introduction of a steel frame in the center of the house allows the major living spaces to merge together and open up to the expansive views of Elliot Bay and the Olympic Mountains to the west. A steel bridge spans the double-height entry space, connecting the spaces built over the expanded garage…
- [Cedar Park House](https://www.houzz.com/hznb/projects/cedar-park-house-pj-vj~1187172)
  - Location: Not specified
  - Photos: 23
  - Description: The Cedar Park house is perched on a bluff high above Lake Washington. The house takes advantage of the prospect afforded by a steep site, while at the same time strengthening the fragile slope and collecting the water that threatens to de-stabilize it. The roofs of the house reflect different strategies for collecting water. The western roof conveys rainwater far enough up-site to allow it to drain naturally to the street. The eastern roof deposits water into three large concrete cisterns that…
- [L2Q House](https://www.houzz.com/hznb/projects/l2q-house-pj-vj~1187290)
  - Location: Not specified
  - Photos: 13
  - Description: The clients for this house in the Beacon Hill neighborhood of Seattle wanted to build economically, responsibly and creatively. The 1,940 square-foot house has a simple rectangular volume that has been folded in two places on the ground floor to respond to the particularities of the site. Living spaces are oriented to the south to optimize sunlight. The entry porch angles toward the street - with an embedded boulder to provide a kid-friendly perch. The house has abundant wall space for art and s…
- [L2Q Studio](https://www.houzz.com/hznb/projects/l2q-studio-pj-vj~1188411)
  - Location: Not specified
  - Photos: 13
  - Description: Shortly after completion of the L2Q house the owners decided to build a structure on the alley for an art studio and a small apartment. The backyard cottage, or detached accessory dwelling unit, is a building type recently permitted by the city of Seattle with the hopes of increasing population density and creating more affordable housing options in certain neighborhoods of the city. The L2Q studio represents an early example of this building type. A compact double-height studio on the ground fl…
- [Rowe House](https://www.houzz.com/hznb/projects/rowe-house-pj-vj~1188474)
  - Location: Not specified
  - Photos: 15
  - Description: This house and bunkhouse/garage are located on a narrow spit of land on Pickering Passage at the south end of Puget Sound, with views of the passage, Hartstine Island and Squaxin Island to the east. Each building is composed of two elements: a lower, more enclosed volume that defines a yard between the two buildings and a larger, more expansive volume with an exposed timber frame that faces outward. The bunkhouse/garage contains a shop and garage below and a flexible living/sleeping space above…

## Community Q&A

**Q: Wood choice** *(in Photo Questions)*

Is this a maple or birch with stain? Lovely!

A: It's actually Doug fir with a clear finish

**Q: Siding** *(in Photo Questions)*

What is that siding system on the upper portion? Is it a supplied/manufactured system that you can find from a rep or is it a custom designed system?

A: Yes, it's a rain screen. Then it's just screws into the 1x2 battens with big washers holding the paperstone in place. In places we needed to put a screw where there wasn't a batten we just used a little 1x block.

**Q: The towel bar is nice. Who makes it? Thanks.** *(in Photo Questions)*

The towel bar looks nice and small where it doesn't project out from the wall too much.

A: if I'm not mistaken it is from the Kohler Stillness line.

**Q: I love the stainless stove hood where did it come from?** *(in Photo Questions)*

A: It comes from Abbaka, who make a wide-range of high-quality range hoods - but this is a custom design.

**Q: What material/product was used for the privacy windows?** *(in Photo Questions)*

A: It's called channel glass. I believe there are a number of manufacturers. This stuff came from Plinkington Glass.

**Q: Love it! What brand/color paint was used on the walls/ceiling?** *(in Photo Questions)*

A: Benjamin Moore Regal Matte OC-45
