> Terri is immensely creative, talented, and a charmer! I highly recommend her. Terri has been a client of mine for many years. Her professionalism, problem solving skills, and inventive designs have made made her a favorite of mine. Seeing Terri's work from behind the scenes I know her eye for detail and organization have allowed her to create effortless looking interiors and a stress-free experience for her own clients. I'm always excited to see how Terri will use a product I've sold her because she doesn't do cookie cutter design--her designs are unique and tailored perfectly to each space.

> I am working with Terri now on a complete condo renovation, and I worked with Terry 23 years ago on the home that I am now leaving for the condo. She has wonderful design instincts and will spend countless hours searching for what she thinks are the right solutions for you. Terri is just as passionate about and committed to your project as you are. She designed casework for me in almost every room and is very flexible in accommodating others ideas whether it was from me, the architect or the contractor. I wouldn't hesitate to hire Terri again and obviously I didn't--23 years later she's working with me again.

**Comment from Terri Weinstein Design, Inc:**

> Laurie, Thanks so much for this review! I really appreciate the sentiment and the effort.

**★★★★★ — reddogg8, Aug. 2015**

> Terri is the best! She and I have been industry associates for over 20 years. Super creative and smart are two words that I use to describe Terri. Terri's renovation of her Higland Park home shows that she vision and a sense of history; in a town where "tear down" has become the norm.

> It is great please that I write this letter of recommendation for Ms. Terri Weinstein
>
> I have known Terry for over ten years; she is one of the most talented interior designers I have met in my entire wood working carrier. We had been working together on number of projects, from small to extremely comprehensive, it is a great experience working with Terri in addition to being a very talented designer, she is extremely reliable, and one of the best designers with whom I’ve worked.
>
> Terry is very innovative and always looking for new solutions and fresh ideas that can advance her knowledge to exceed her client’s needs ?? Her design skills, communication and openness to solving problems are all valuable traits, Terri is also a fun person to work with, and is always helpful and insightful. She is a passionate designer and always seems to have great awareness of new creative strategies and technology, which makes her a great asset to anyone who need to make some changes in the house, or work together with Terry on a new house with her great and unique ideas I’d highly recommend Terry for any type of design work.

## Community Q&A

**Q: Anyone know what kind of duct wrap (green) was used here?** *(in Photo Questions)*

Simply trying to find out the product information for the green duct wrap used in this basement.

A: paint: Benjamin Moore

**Q: Oddly patterned flooring inlays** *(in Design Dilemma)*

Previous homeowner put these unique floors in, the dark portions are inlays, so refinishing is not an option, as the circular cut will still show. Solutions? Should we paint over the whole thing? We like the darker color but not the pattern and how it creates an unbalanced space.

A: Here's another possibility...ask a flooring installer if they can remove the circles and feather in wood to match the existing lighter wood. Feathering means they would remove more boards than just those in the circles such that the floor would not look as if you'd just replaced the circles. Any good flooring installer should be able to do this provided the floors are solid wood. Then you can sand the entire floor and finish as you like.
Painting the floors will not be a happy solution as discussed above...the paint will wear badly in traffic patterns.
An interior designer might be able to use furniture and rugs to make a condition you don't like be the inspiration for something wonderful.
I hope this is helpful. Best of luck to you!

**Q: White walls with white trim?** *(in Design Dilemma)*

I'm converting an 8x10 bedroom into a home office. I wanted to use dark gray walls and all white furniture to keep the room calm and uncluttered (conducive to work), but I'm worried the size of the room would make it too cave-like (even if I have lots of white framed/matted artwork and white bookshelves). If I settle for a single dark gray accent wall, do I paint the walls the same white as the room's trim (baseboard, doors, window, etc.)? I've tested a slightly off-white that works with the gray, but I'm worried it's looking yellow next to the white trim. (Pardon the mess, I just moved in)

A: I agree with the designer that said "go for it!". Be brave. Believe it or not, when all the walls are painted the same color the room tends to appear larger because the eye doesn't discern the corners as much. White trim is a good choice too, especially if the rest of the house has white trim. I don't particularly care for accent walls. They exaggerate the corners and tend to make the space appear smaller. NOTE: If you're going to use a darker color, you'll need more light. Darker colors absorb more of the light than lighter ones. The color chips usually tell you the percentage of light that is absorbed. Light artwork (accent light), be sure to have work light, and most important, general illumination. Lighting the walls will make the room seem brighter. Everything should be on a dimmer! Remember too that paint always looks darker when it dries, and it also looks darker when a patch against a white wall. That's because when a dark color is surrounded by a lighter one, or vice versa, each color's lightness or darkness is exaggerated. I hope this is helpful.

**Q: Kitchen Cabinets: Take them white or darker wood?** *(in Design Dilemma)*

We are going to have our cabinets refinished. Should I stain the wood darker or take them off-white? Will probably contrast the island. Floor is staying the same. Countertops are staying the same. Backsplash is coming out and will probably be replaced with subway tile. Ideas?

A: If you're going to use subway tile (which I love!) I would definitely use off white on the cabinets. Make sure the finished color on the cabinetry will blend (not necessarily match) the subway tile you choose.

**Q: Replacing carpet with wood...but which wood?** *(in Design Dilemma)*

I'd like to remove this grey carpet and put down wood flooring in the recessed living room area and attached bedroom. The issue is that in order to avoid a discrepancy in the floor height (which creates issues with bathroom floor in the bedroom etc), I'll need to use engineered wood, which will be very difficult to match exactly with the kitchen floor. So I'm hoping for some engineered wood floor recommendations, similar or different, any ideas for grain/color/pattern/quality/etc would be much appreciated. Thanks.

A: I understand the height discrepancy problem. Would still prefer a threshold that is angled to make up the 3/4" difference to an engineered floor. Haven't used laminate floors, but my instinct would be to stay with 3/4" hardwood. You could even bleach and stain a color or have someone paint a rug on the hardwood floor and then seal it over several coats with a protective material so that you don't walk off the design. This painted rug idea works extremely well in a dining room where a fiber rug is bound to get dirty under the table, and has to be quite large to accommodate the sliding in and out of the chairs.

**Q: Where to start to upgrade this kitchen?** *(in Design Dilemma)*

I'm on a tight budget but hoping to update my kitchen and not sure where to start. Help!!!

A: HI Julie, My first question is what do you want to accomplish? Change floors? Cabinets? Layout? And second, what is your "tight" budget?

Kitchen renovations can be quite costly, and one thing seems to impact another. For example if you change cabinets, you'll have to consider countertops which may impact backsplashes. Changing the floor may require you to move cabinetry depending on how the floor was set and if it goes under the cabinets. Please share more details.

If you have a very small budget you might want to consider just painting the walls and changing the backsplash and perhaps the countertops, keeping the cabinets and floor. If you are going to change the lighting, you'll probably have to repaint the ceiling after it is repaired to cover any unwanted holes from either old fixtures or from installing the new ones. If it were my kitchen, I'd do your research and figure out what it's going to cost to do the things that you want to change. Save your money until you can make the changes all at once and then pounce. I know this is hard, but it's such a waste to do small changes and then have to re-do them because you're still not satisfied. Waiting is always hard, but sometimes well worth it. Then you'll have exactly what you want with no backtracking. What do you think? Clients hate when I tell them this, but it's really good advice.
