Bottom line: Highly pleased with Cabinet Discounters, Inc (CDI). Excellent planning and design service (thank you Mary C!), great management of logistics in procuring all the necessary materials before starting demo, expert craftsmanship and high quality materials for everything from the flooring, to the plumbing, to the cabinetry, to the shower and glass and all tile work, and top notch electrical and lighting. The price was very competitive (we got more than one bid). Our carpenter, Joe M., acted as the foreman, so to speak, and moved walls, rebuilt subflooring as necessary, installed cabinets, and did trim work revealing the true expert he is. Every other specialist did their jobs professionally and efficiently. All were courteous and made special efforts to minimize dust. Great attention to cleanliness and disposal of all waste. We were extremely impressed with the detailed architectural plans we received, the itemized proposal that allowed us to see exactly what we were paying for for each item and its requisite labor, and especially for the detailed daily schedule of work, showing who was coming to the house (by name and function) and exactly for how many days. CDI stuck to the schedule they presented us and wasn't even a single day late in completing the project. Now, one year later, all the work is intact and we have ZERO complaints or regrets. I love the look of and working with walnut so I had to have walnut cabinets. Of the VERY few kitchen places selling walnut cabinetry, Cabinet Discounters (CD) had the best combination of quality and price. What really sold us was our salesperson, Colleen Reilly, at the OLNEY, Maryland store. Colleen was extremely knowledgeable about every aspect of the remodel and was particularly thoughtful and gave great suggestions and anticipated our needs. It was thrilling to see our dream kitchen come to life in the computer renderings she created as we shared our vision with her. After receiving the cabinets, there were a few found to have defects from the factory (not CD’s fault). She was great about quickly reordering the needed pieces. All of the work was completed in a timely fashion and on schedule—there were no delays. The resulting product is very beautiful and functional. > > At our very first meeting with Marie Gignilliat at Cabinet Discounters Gaithersburg, MD showroom it was clear that we made the right choice. Marie was very patient and listened carefully to what we wanted. She also guided us through the process. After our meeting, Marie developed a design that worked very well in our 1950’s Cape Cod house. She included features that we would have never thought of on our own and she designed a layout that was more useful and functional than our current kitchen. Once we had a plan, Marie helped us with choosing the right cabinetry, color, countertop and hardware and all within our budget. > > The project started on schedule and our first contractor was Brent from Brentwood Builders. Brent methodically deconstructed our old kitchen and removed all the cabinetry and appliances. During the deconstruction phase, Brent found that the old dishwasher had leaked damaging the floor underneath that Brent repaired without a delay in the schedule. When the new cabinets arrived Brent expertly installed them and the new appliances. Speaking of appliances, Marie recommended ADU appliances in Gaithersburg, Our sales person was Kenneth Cochran and he too provided expert service. It was essential that we choose our appliances early on in the process so that Marie could incorporate them in to the design. After we made our choices, Kenneth alerted us that the appliances that we were thinking about were on sale several months before we needed, them. Kenneth arranged to have delivery of the appliances deferred and that allowed us to take advantage of the sale without having the appliances on site. Brent found the dishwasher leak two days before the appliance delivery and Kenneth was able to find a dishwasher and have it delivered with the other appliances averting a long delay to completing the project. I cannot speak highly enough of Brent and Kenneth. > > Next Debbie and Alex (Debbie’s assistant) from Tri-Star Electricians worked on the the electrical part of the project installing new outlets, switches, installation of under cabinet lighting and rough-in for the dishwasher and garbage disposal that were “specked” in Marie’s plan. Debbie is not only a highly skilled technician but an outstanding engineer. She made some terrific suggestions about lighting options and other electrical issues with our old house. > > I don’t know the names of the counter top installers or fabricators from Creative In Counters, but they too were extraordinary craftsmen and the installed counters fit perfectly. > > The last phase of the project was installation of the tile backsplash by Benito. Countertop delivery and installation was excellent. My issue is with the designer, starting out I thought she did a good job. It wasn't until my contractor started installing the cabinets the problem arose. Instead of a sink cabinet I received a blind cabinet with a drawer where the sink would be. Also, the cabinet was supposed to be 48" inches and was only 45" and didn't touch the back wall when I asked why she said it wasn't supposed to touch the wall but never gave me a reason why. The next issue was the same cabinet was missing the left panel and just left open on one side, she said that's the way it comes but couldn't answer why. When I asked about getting a panel for it because I didn't just want it left open, she wanted to sell me a piece of panel for $255. I declined that offer and got a piece of plywood for $30. Since the cabinet was installed when I discovered these issues my contractor worked it out. Our projects consisted of a full kitchen renovation, a basement wet bar and a master bathroom in a DC rowhouse. Both the kitchen (pictured) and master bath were A+. Challenging row house issues were identified and addressed in advance in both spaces. There were some attempts at unnecessary upsells - such as a drawer insert that takes the place of a knife block that cost $100 more than a regular drawer insert with slots for silverware - but it seems like every vendor involved in a home renovation does that. > > However, the wet bar didn't come out as well as we'd hoped. The original design proposed by our designer was way over the top and wouldn't have fit the space due to the low 7' ceiling and radiator pipes that infringed on the space. That led to the removal (by us) of upper cabinets and some other changes to bring the cost down a bit. Despite that, our designer missed the fact that the drawer on one of the cabinets can't open fully (see other picture) due to a support beam. While others - including us - missed that, I consider our designer to have primary accountability, especially given that she came to the house during construction to take measurements. Had that issue been identified at that point, we could have further tweaked the design and purchased one fewer cabinet and shortened the counter, saving at least $500 and opening up the space significantly. > > Oh, well. During the design process, she brought in the carpenter to verify that some of the structural changes desired would be feasible at reasonable cost. > Once the design was approved, and the granite, lighting and tile were selected, we got handed off to the installation team who provided us with a day-by-day schedule. We were impressed that our project started on exactly the day it was scheduled to start. However, we were even more impressed that the project was completed on exactly the day it was scheduled for completion, despite the fact that the five week timeframe included the Thanksgiving holidays! The final cost was also exactly what we were expecting. > The end result was a beautiful, highly functional kitchen that feels much more open and has substantially more usable, convenient storage space. When our contractor started to unbox and assemble the cabinets, we noticed several damaged pieces including a cracked upper cabinet carcass, sloppy paint on cabinet doors, dings, dents and scratches on various cabinets as well as glue protruding from the seam on some of the cabinets (photographs available). Additionally, most of the cabinet doors do not line up correctly. We asked to have all defective parts replaced under warranty in order to minimize schedule delays. > > Our contractor coordinated with Cabinet Discounters to order the warranty items on Aug 27, 2014. We were told a two week delivery. To date, we have not received the replacement parts almost one month later. Our kitchen remodel is on hold indefinitely. We have been told by our contractor that our order for replacement parts under warranty cannot be expedited. As you can probably imagine, it is difficult to be without a kitchen, let alone suffer additional delays due to what appears to be inefficient business processes and/or negligence on the part of Cabinet Discounters. > > Cabinet Discounters claims they are committed to providing superior customer service and only offer quality products. Really? Cabinet Discounters need to improve their quality controls, fix broken, sluggish and/or inefficient business processes for replacing defective parts under warranty. This is a major customer service issue. We will most likely never purchase cabinets made by Century Cabinetry or purchased from Cabinet Discounters again. Between poor customer service, lack of quality controls, and inefficient business processes, cabinets made by Century Cabinetry or purchased from Cabinet Discounters are not worth the extra cost savings. Do yourself a favor and purchase cabinets from Home Depot or Lowes. We interviewed three different cabinet companies including CD because three other folks whose kitchens we liked had used them and by chance they had Lois Elliott as their Designer. > > A word about the other two companies. We also looked at replacing the cabinets with the same brand we had that were 25 years old and still in fairly good shape. That designer/owner was helpful. Numerous mistakes along the way caused the job (redoing both full baths in our house) to take twice as long. For example, the shower door installer ruined one finished bath by trying to install the door in the wrong bath. Worse, and unbelievably, CD did not finish the first bath before starting and making substantial progress on the second! The last straw, however, was that CD refused to take responsibility for making sure that the tile and grout purchased were what was needed to do the job (the customer has the nominal responsibility to buy the tile, but CD neither gave us proper instruction for doing this nor checked our work). It wasn’t just the result – the wrong grout was used in each bathroom, one of the causes of the delays experienced – but the fact that up and down the company, from the salesman and the scheduler to the troubleshooter and ultimately the co-owner, they refused to acknowledge any responsibility for the mistakes that were caused. More than one representative persisted in blaming us. The Brighton Cabinets are furniture grade, we went with Dupont Zodiac instead of granite because I didn't want any maintenance. We did a Corian back splash with a subway tile cut and now that is the in thing. We went with a floating floor that looked like ceramic tile. We took out the formal dining area because we never used it. The process took a month, but was well worth it.
