For more than 35 years, the team at Hutker Architects has been helping families and individuals create one-of-a-kind homes in New England and beyond. We are committed to the principle of “build once, well,” looking to the historic architecture of the region as inspiration for original, narrative design. Our process begins with listening. We work together to create a program of indoor and outdoor spaces that will best support the way you live, work, and play.

First, we study the particulars of the site and the priorities of the individuals who will live in the house. From there, we establish desired life patterns and work to create spaces that make the most of a home’s unique location while creating spaces that support and anticipate our clients’ lives today and in the future.

Our team of over 65 professionals shares a passion for place and a belief that houses are the most important structures people occupy. We continue to be inspired by the unique challenge of creating a place that feels like “home” for each client. Whether designing a primary residence or a summer retreat, we strive to create inviting, adaptable houses that are well suited for today but will be enjoyed for generations.

**★★★★★ — Cobb Architects, Oct. 2014**

> It is always a pleasure to see architecture become something more. Hutker Architects transcend the simplicity of home building and turn space and material into art. The details are held in the highest regard and a careful thoughtfulness for doing things in a new and unique way is evident throughout every project and design you see them create. As fellow architects and designers it is inspiring to see a firm do such things.

## Selected projects

- [Back River](https://www.houzz.com/hznb/projects/back-river-pj-vj~6901256)
  - Location: Duxbury, MA
  - Photos: 12
  - Description: This home, perched on a hill overlooking the tidal salt marches of Duxbury Bay, required creative solutions to achieve the desired contemporary program while speaking to the vernacular of historic homes in the area. The new home recycles archetypes from the town's rich history, including gabled forms clad in naturally weathered cedar and a white painted Tory chimney. Presenting as a modest, single-story home from the street, the transparent main entry door begins to break with tradition, introdu…
- [Chesapeake](https://www.houzz.com/hznb/projects/chesapeake-pj-vj~6084271)
  - Location: Gibson Island, MD
  - Photos: 21
  - Description: This home on the western shores of Gibson Island was designed as a weekend retreat for a young family in nearby Washington, DC. The program is comprised of four distinct gabled volumes. Navigating through these structures and their flat roof connections, one experiences the architecture and the landscape in ever changing light. Strategic use of exterior materials on the interior of the building and near-continuous glazing on the water-facing façades further blur the line between inside and out.…
- [Big Bluff](https://www.houzz.com/hznb/projects/big-bluff-pj-vj~6040700)
  - Location: Oak Bluffs, MA
  - Photos: 36
  - Description: Located in a historic neighborhood with a commanding ocean view, “Big Bluff” was a beloved community fixture that succumbed to years of storms and deferred upkeep. Hutker Architects was charged with designing a new home in its place – to honor the character of the original while adding gracious spaces for modern living and entertaining. Traditional materials, installed with modern techniques, are poised to shoulder generations of wind and weather. Wherever possible, fixtures and furnishings from…

  - Location: Tisbury, MA
  - Photos: 14
  - Description: This home, overlooking a saltwater pond and barrier beach with the Atlantic Ocean beyond, had once been the site of an old fishing and hunting camp. Its new owners aimed to create a comfortable family getaway that preserved the essence of the property's unique history. Working with Hutker Architects, they arrived at a design for a modern beach camp. The main building contains common living and dining areas, as well as a bedroom wing, while the master suite (with private study) is housed in a sep…

  - Location: Not specified
  - Photos: 11
  - Description: Situated atop Squibnocket hill, the home responds to 180 degree views of the Atlantic through a series of hipped roof volumes and flat roof connectors. The program is defined by a series of hipped roof forms each incorporating different levels of natural light and specific viewscapes and anchored by a “sugar mill”; an elliptical stone gesture inspired by the client’s fondness for the West Indies. Externally, the mill volume functions to demark the home’s primary point of entry while internally a…

  - Description: This year-round home on Boston's North Shore celebrates multi-generational living with a garden suite that functions independently for the homeowners parents with abundant natural light, ventilation and ocean view as well as an outdoor garden. This unique form of the kitchen was generated by mimicking the natural contour of the site and natural flow of water down the ledge and the kitchen becomes an extension of the small rocky archipelago that extends from the point of the property.

The procession extends past a stone grotto, pool and spa, in-law suite, and morning terrace, before arriving at a semi-circular view deck.
