> Excellent Job Garen, Chuck et.al on my master bath and my lower bathroom - both have exceeded my expectations and you are all a delight to work with on any project....as I mentioned I would love to have you on "retainer".... your work is impeccable.

**★★★★★ — Anne Parsons, Feb. 2019**

> We had a major home remodeling project which resulted from broken water pipes last winter. It was our good fortune to learn of Hawthorn Development Group and Garen Johnson. We initially contacted Garen by email and his reply was prompt and very reassuring-a huge ‘plus’ for me! Our first meeting provided us with valuable information and great confidence that this was going to be a wonderful working relationship. Garen and his crew consistently arrive on time, are meticulously neat and clean, do beautiful work and show great attention to detail. They listened to us with regard to our selection of materials and colors and offered great ideas as well. I enthusiastically recommend Hawthorn Development Group and Garen Johnson for any project.

**★★★★★ — Michael Bolinger, Feb. 2019**

> Hawthorn Development Group worked with us to redesign an outdated Master Bath. We had a very specific aesthetic we were going for and Garen and team took the time to listen and to help source the materials to realize our vision.
> The workmanship was great and we are very pleased with the outcome. I have referred Hawthorn Development to colleagues and friends, something I do not do lightly.

**★★★★★ — Lindsay L, Feb. 2019**

> Garen and his team did a great job on both of our bathrooms, they made the process very enjoyable, great to work with, great ideas & design! We look forward to working with them again!

**★★★★★ — Kim Rasmussen, Feb. 2019**

> Garen and his team renovated my master bathroom and their work is amazing--I love my new bathroom! I'm so pleased with how it turned out and would highly recommend Hawthorn Development Group for any remodels or house projects. Garen and his team went above and beyond and they will be the first one I call for my next project!

**★★★★★ — anners1212, Nov. 2017**

> Garen and his team were amazing to work with! Their attention to detail, input on style, and high quality craftsmanship made the process easy and successful.
> They went above and beyond to ensure that the project was meeting our needs both, during and after, construction.
> They will be our first call for any and all future home projects we have!

**★★★★★ — bungalowboy, Nov. 2015**

> Garen and his team have done numerous projects in my home, from built-ins to a beautiful screen porch that has become our favorite room in the house! Garen is the "un-contractor." He shows up on time, always has a creative solution, over-delivers value, communicates well, works neat, cleans up better than our cleaning lady, and delivers excellence on every project. We recommend Garen to all our family and friends without hesitation.

**★★★★★ — Hines Supply, Nov. 2015**

> I've been working with Garen as a supplier for over 20-years now. I love working with Garen because he is very respectful of both, his customers and me as his supplier. Which includes, lumber & building materials, decking products, windows, exterior entry doors, siding, and interior trim & doors. There are times when things don't go as planned, and Garen is always very professional and we worked out the quickest and best solution for every given situation. I would without hesitation have Garen do work on my home, and hopefully that happens soon as we are planning to move & remodel later next year when my daughter graduates from hs.

**★★★★★ — tpowers50, Nov. 2015**

> Hawthorn Development Group built a screened porch off the back of our house. The entire experience was outstanding. The finished product is beautiful. Communication throughout the project was timely and accurate. All work was done on time and with a high level of professionalism. We could not have been happier with Hawthorn Development Group. We plan to contract with Garen for future projects at our home and highly recommend him to anyone looking for an honest, hard working, reliable company that does high quality work.

**★★★★★ — smcookies, Oct. 2015**

> We have had the Hawthorn Group do several projects in our home. They have finished our basement, re-done two of our bathrooms, as well replace all the interior doors in our home. They have done an excellent job. I highly recommend this company. One of the definite positives of this company is that I felt safe with the employees in the home even when I wasn't there. Very trustworthy. The owner is great to work with and has great ideas to help me get things just the way I want them. Very creative and knowledgeable. Completed work is excellent!! Give them a call!

**★★★★★ — daveob, Oct. 2015**

> Garen updated our 1960 ranch entryway, living room, dining room and powder room. We put in new base boards, doors, windows, slider, fresh paint, refinished the ole tired hardwood floors and replaced the tile flooring.
> Our biggest project was one he suggested to us immediately, take our flat eight foot ceiling and make it a cathedral ceiling. We never thought of making such a change. It is beautiful! He is excellent at listening to his customers, offering suggestions and going forward in the direction the customer wants.

**★★★★★ — J L Lilly Inc., Sept. 2015**

> Professional, detail oriented, punctual, "a true craftsman that can think on his feet" to make any project move along without stress.
> Garen is honest, realistic and sincere about the entire scope of the project right from the start...very refreshing in today's market.
> We have worked together on several projects, including a major reno of my own home, with 4 kids in the house...he kept everything running like clock work.
> Great team of industries pro's are in his sub-contract roster as well.
> A true artist, he can even advise on the art and photography for your new walls.
> I have complete trust in this company working on any design project of mine.

## Selected projects

- [Modernist Vintage Master](https://www.houzz.com/hznb/projects/modernist-vintage-master-pj-vj~2784601)
 - Location: Hawthorn Woods, IL
 - Photos: 6
 - Description: This cape cod style bathroom went from a dark, cramped space into a true "spa at home"experience! We ended up relocating nearly everything! The old double vanity was actually outside this area. We eliminated them and added a large closet with a custom closet organizer and bright motion sensing lights so you have plenty of light to pick out the days wardrobe. We also moved the toilet, shower, and took out the tub. The new plumbing has plenty of options with a large shower head, 4 body sprays, and…
- [Tudor Transformation](https://www.houzz.com/hznb/projects/tudor-transformation-pj-vj~1185496)
 - Location: Arlington Heights, IL
 - Photos: 11
 - Description: The challenge was to turn a claustrophobic and dark kitchen with a lack of counter space into a modern dream kitchen, that would not look out of place in this century old, brick Tudor. We started by removing two doorways that did nothing but constrict the traffic flow in the kitchen. One allowed us to connect the kitchen with a small cluttered entryway and create a real, usable length of countertop space. The window in that old entry also helped add great natural light to the whole kitchen. The…
- [Green with Envy](https://www.houzz.com/hznb/projects/green-with-envy-pj-vj~2785142)
 - Location: Lake Zurich, IL
 - Photos: 3
 - Description: This small kitchen was in need of a refresh and with the new white cabinets and glass cabinets it really turned out spectacular! The design by Barb, from Homes Heart Design, made great use of the space we had available! The owners love of green worked out well with a fun quartz choice and a fantastic subway alternative to create a bold accent to the white cabinets.
- [Lake Zurich master](https://www.houzz.com/hznb/projects/lake-zurich-master-pj-vj~2784497)
 - Location: Lake Zurich, IL
 - Photos: 6
 - Description: Typical scenario across america...a master bath in a tract subdivision that just doesn't work for two active parents. Add in the ubiquitous, unused 1990's soaker tub and the space is used up in all the wrong places! Removing the tub allowed us to add a whole wall of cabinets and add a second sink. The vanity tower has electrical outlets inside and stores the hair dryer, curling irons, etc... inside and they stay plugged in so are always ready to be pulled out and used., but can be hidden away ea…
- [Miller kitchen](https://www.houzz.com/hznb/projects/miller-kitchen-pj-vj~1270634)
 - Location: Deer Park, IL
 - Photos: 9
 - Description: A dramatic change of layout turned this dated kitchen into a great new space to entertain all the homeowners frequent guests. We went so far as to remove and relocate the powder room in order to create more space for the kitchen. A second dishwasher and sink on the island help with work flow before and after parties. Re-using the owners built-in oven and adding a range gives the home a double oven without needing the tall wall space.
- [North Ave Cape Cod](https://www.houzz.com/hznb/projects/north-ave-cape-cod-pj-vj~448496)
 - Location: Barrington, IL
 - Photos: 5
 - Description: This was quite the transformation! This nearly 80 year old cape cod was in desperate need of a new kitchen but the owners and I agreed we really wanted to update while keeping the feel and design integrity of this old gem. The home had several original arches, so when we opened up the wall between the kitchen and family room,we mirrored the same style and curve of the original. We also removed a cased opening that led to the back hallway and addedthe arch to make an even more dramatic entry into…
- [Trevino master suite](https://www.houzz.com/hznb/projects/trevino-master-suite-pj-vj~443756)
 - Location: Libertyville, IL
 - Photos: 9
 - Description: This was a really interesting project. Although only 15 years old, and in a nice subdivision, the existing bathroom had pretty basic, builder grade cabinets and cultured marble counter tops. They also had a 7' long mirror and long strip light above the mirror. The tub area had some solid surface pieces on the three walls as a splash, and the front skirt was the standard removable fiberglass panel. Another issue was the closet entrance. It previously angled in on both sides to create a "V" with do…
- [The Saxony swap](https://www.houzz.com/hznb/projects/the-saxony-swap-pj-vj~1299599)
 - Location: Lake Villa, IL
 - Photos: 11
 - Description: This was an interesting project. We had a small kitchen with large and much less used dining and living room spaces on either side of the kitchen. With a small door into the kitchen dividing up the one wall and a half wall looking out the second and a large sliding glass door on the third, there was very little cabinet space and almost no long usable runs of counterspace. The previous dining area was enclosed in a bunch of decorative, drywalled arches and created a dark, closed off feel to the e…

## Community Q&A

**Q: molding and doors** *(in Design Dilemma)*

should i paint them the same color as the walls (cream) or white as the previous owner?

A: Even basic looking trim pops with a little contrast, so we always do trim white

**Q: Indoor sunroom needs help!** *(in Design Dilemma)*

This 17.5' by 7.5' sunroom is small but roomy enough for a sitting area. I need help of what to put in this space. We will lighten up the paint with a fresh whitish color. We are thinking of putting berber carpet on the floor as they are uneven and tile or painting the cement won't work. Thanks for your help can't wait to hear suggestions!

A: I think I would add some wood wainscoting to the lower part(36" up from floor) of the brick columns to add some depth and interest. and then maybe use a nice engineered floating floor on top of the concrete. That would be much warmer floor to spend time on then a tile floor.

**Q: Window color problem** *(in Design Dilemma)*

I need help fast. I am about to spend thousands of dollars 4000 to be exact to get my windows a custom color ( snowbound white- Sherwin Williams ) to match the exterior painted brick. The white color the windows from factory come in ( free ) is very very close to the Snowbound white color I picked for exterior yet may appear in certain light a more yellow undertone not clear and crisp. I am not good with color. I will have trees around my house and porch roof creating shadows etc on the windows throughout the day. The house has tons of windows bc of the colonial style with Eagle - Anderson's architecture windows and black shutters - so will I notice the difference and it destroy the look of the house I am building? What is your take on matching windows with exterior paint ? The photo shows a board painted with Snowbound ( exterior color) and a window in other color.

A: I agree, I think there are other places you could use the $4000, and don't forget, with double hungs, the screen is on the outside, so that will "block" the view of the color difference even more. Also, I'm thinking the painted brick will have all sorts of pits and pores and texture (which the board does not) which will disguise the color even further. And once you go through a year of weather, no one will notice except for you.

**Q: Faucet** *(in Photo Questions)*

Who makes the faucet?

A: It's a Grohe Bridgeford
