**Q: Waterproof engineered hardwood in a dry climate** *(in Remodeling)*

We are looking to put flooring in a large open area, kitchen, living dining, hall. as well as a powder and guest bathroom.  We were wondering if anyone had experience with waterproof hardwood.

A: If, you are installing over a slab. You need proper moisture control. Cracks should be chased and filled, spallings repaired, hi/lo spots brought into flatness tolerance.  Use a compatible moisture control system to the adhesive being used.  Even though you are in a dry climate zone.  Air will always carry moisture.  So, protect your flooring from any air vapor from under.  That's one half of your waterproof system.

**Q: is this enough to run hardwood floor parallel to joist?** *(in Woodworking)*

Currently we have 23/32" plywood subfloor, with 16" OC joist. Trying to install Bruce 3/4" thickness hardwood floor. 

in the manufacturers' instruction, it says 

> When installing parallel to the floor joists it may be necessary to stiffen
the subfloor system by installing an additional minimum of 3/8˝ (9.5 mm) approved wood underlayment.

so i'm looking to add a layer of 3/8" CDX plywood as underlayment on top of the subfloor

now if there are any uneven-ness, is it better to sand down the subfloor, then lay the underlayment, or lay the underlayment and fix the ueven-ness at this level, before laying down the hardwood floor?

A: Fix first if, possible.  If, you plan to install self leveler. Use a gypsum base self leveler. It's more flexible compared to the portland cement based.

**Q: What is the issue with these white oak floors?** *(in Flooring)*

Can you give me your professional opinion on these floors? They’re white oak, finished with Bona NordicSeal and Bona Traffic HD. We believe the crew followed a proper sanding process, but the execution seems poor. Currently there is one coat of NordicSeal and one coat of Traffic HD. When they attempted a second coat of NordicSeal, the area in photo 2 turned milky/gray. That area was previously done 3 years ago with Nordic and traffic and looked fantastic - now with the refinishing, the area is gray. There are also splotchy areas in the raw wood that was installed, roughness, gaps and boards with a lot of visible filler that look like corners were knicked. Before they buff and put the second Traffic coat on, I’d like to know whether you think this can be corrected by buffing/recoating or whether the floor needs to go back to raw wood and be resanded.
Looking at these photos, does this look primarily like a sanding/preparation problem, a NordicSeal application problem, or both?

A: Only issue is the bottom right corner. Everything else is normal.  A second coat will help seal and even things out.  The image I pointed out, looks like there was a contamination, spot fix first.

**Q: Need new flooring** *(in Flooring)*

We had a plumbing disaster and will be replacing our floors next week. A blessing in disguise because I have never liked the laminate floors that were put in this house. Any advise or inspo photos for what we should put in. I have a terrible time picking up on undertones and am scared to pick out the wrong flooring!

A: Start with white oak.

**Q: Bona Traffic Satin vs. Matte** *(in Flooring)*

Hello, we installed 5 inch white oak hardwood floors and will be staining them bona natural. Im torn between traffic hd satin or matte finish. Is one better for kids and pets? My GC said he normally does satin but matte is good too. The more shine the more you see the dirt, which is making me consider matte.

A: The lighter the color the flatter the finish. And a duller finish will show less scratches and damages.

**Q: polished concrete. Keep or cover with engineered wood?** *(in Home Decorating)*

I just purchased this 1975 Spanish townhouse. These pics are from the previous owner when listed. My dilemma is that I’m updating the kitchen as well as some can lights, interior doors, paint, and bathroom cabinets. I’m torn because I don’t love polished concrete but I also don’t hate it if I can get a look I like. I also struggle because the previous owner left tile in the bathrooms and laundry that doesn’t transition because it sits higher. I plan on replacing the tile in those areas but I’m struggling if I would make a mistake not covering the concrete?
I’m starting over building my life after battling stage IV cancer so I’m also looking at the cost. I want to love my space but, I also need to use the money I have wisely in my remodel.

A: Concrete floor is less maintenance compared to other flooring.  You can always add area rugs to soften it up.  You can refinish concrete floors to match your interior design.
