But like all things composed only of surfaces, it was void, and hollow beneath, a masque to hide other darker, more painful realities; their ugliness, like a rotting disease, could not be seen, only felt. Yet like a moth, dancing before a bright flame, I was drawn towards its sparkle, and held myself only fortunate if I might be able to reach out to i… - ["Stars Fell On Alabama"](https://www.houzz.com/hznb/projects/stars-fell-on-alabama-pj-vj~314258) - Location: Auburn, AL - Photos: 15 - Description: What worlds I have created for my clients have come from a fantasy, nonetheless; it is the fantasy of creation; the empty, waiting space that needs but the touch of the sure hand and the careful eye to enliven it. One's vision is conceived in colour and texture, form and pattern, in an arrangement both creative and disciplined; it is all there; one sees it within the depths of one's thought, and it is translated into a living, breathing reality, a room to be lived in, appreciated, and enjoyed. O… - ["How to Make an American Quilt"](https://www.houzz.com/hznb/projects/how-to-make-an-american-quilt-pj-vj~268646) - Location: Oak Park, IL - Photos: 18 - Description: The Shingle Style, properly known as the Arts & Crafts Movement, grew out of the English movement initiated by William Morris and Charles Voysey; it found its own expression via the Boston exhibition of 1897. A reaction against the excesses of Victorian architecture & design, it became a hallmark of original, American style, perhaps best exemplified by Greene & Greene, Bernard Maybeck, and Frank Lloyd Wright. The serene, tree-lined streets of Oak Park, River Forest, and Riverside maintain a rema… - ["A Backwards Glance"](https://www.houzz.com/hznb/projects/a-backwards-glance-pj-vj~265737) - Location: Chicago, IL - Photos: 32 - Description: I have not yet willed myself to look at the pattern of my marriage; like Anne of Cleves' ring, it has become something of no force or value. Unlike her, I have not destroyed it; it is still beautiful. Although it has not embraced my hand for a long period, it has retained its meaning; it is a passage of time, frozen. I wonder what I shall see, in what colours and shapes should this pattern present itself, finally, to me. Will it be in the deep cobalt-blues and vermillion reds of my sitting room,… - ["A Weekend in the Country"](https://www.houzz.com/hznb/projects/a-weekend-in-the-country-pj-vj~264967) - Location: St Joseph, MI - Photos: 23 - Description: The blue jay maintains a special place in the spiritual traditions of the indigenous peoples, and in the shamanic practises. His colouring reflects the balance between heaven and earth, and the air in-between, no other creature possesses it. His feathers are a deep, vibrant blue, with markings of black and white; his call is loud and strident. I once found a brilliant blue feather beneath the trees; however, when I picked it up, the colour faded, and became pale and transparent in my hand. When… - ["The 2008 Dream House at the Merchandise Mart"](https://www.houzz.com/hznb/projects/the-2008-dream-house-at-the-merchandise-mart-pj-vj~262979) - Location: Chicago, IL - Photos: 11 - Description: The name Chanel is, for me, and others, synonymous with fashion, elegance, and superb, sophisticated, enduring style. Inspired by the Paris 1925 Exposition des Art Décoratifs, which gave us the term "Art Deco", the design for this Bathroom was created to reflect the mood of the French capital between two world wars;a time of unbridled optimism, limitless creativity and an apogee of design which still influences us today. This lovely room reflects the many transitional, and, in some instances, co… - ["The 2009 Lake Forest Show House"](https://www.houzz.com/hznb/projects/the-2009-lake-forest-show-house-pj-vj~260620) - Location: Lake Forest, IL - Photos: 26 - Description: The Lansdowne estate in Lake Bluff, built for the Rand McNally heirs, commands fine views over Lake Michigan to the east, and over large playing fields and gardens, to the south and west. General Patton played polo here, while stationed at Fort Sheridan; one may still hear the echo of booted feet upon the stairs and in the long, echoing corridors of the third floor, where the players' bedrooms are still extant. For the Son's Bedroom, I created a design programme for that of a Notre Dame graduate… - ["Up at the Villa"](https://www.houzz.com/hznb/projects/up-at-the-villa-pj-vj~257696) - Location: Lake Forest, IL - Photos: 22 - Description: The design of an English chair is different from that of a French seat, for the one is made to serve a masculine taste, and the other to serve its decidedly more feminine counterpart. In a French chaise or fauteuil, one observes the influence of Madame de Pompadour, via the graceful curves of a velvet-covered duchesse, in the lines of an elegant bergere; the softening of the Louis Quinze line, the emergence of the cabriole, that leaps like a goat on the floor. The hand of the English master, Chi… - [A Gentleman's Apartment](https://www.houzz.com/hznb/projects/a-gentleman-s-apartment-pj-vj~95715) - Location: Not specified - Photos: 5 - [A Townhouse in Chicago](https://www.houzz.com/hznb/projects/a-townhouse-in-chicago-pj-vj~95622) - Location: Not specified - Photos: 7 [See all 10 projects](https://www.houzz.com/professionals/architects-and-building-designers/sanjay-r-singhal-professional-design-services-pc-pfvwus-pf~184691878) ## Community Q&A **Q: Paint** *(in Photo Questions)* Could you tell me the name of the blue paint? Gorgeous room. A: Interior latex flat, applied in four (4) successive coats. **Q: Bedding** *(in Photo Questions)* I love this room. Where are the comforter and bedskirt from? A: Thanks for your question; both the comforter & bedskirt are custom pieces, which I designed for the room. **Q: Love the floral red chintz. Can you tell me fabric name? Where from?** *(in Photo Questions)* A: Good afternoon, and thanks for your message; the fabric is Ralph Lauren. The pattern name is "Beach House Floral"; the colour is "Fuchsia". I'm not sure if this is still available; a comparable pattern/colour would be Ralph Lauren "Belle Harbour" or "Aylesbury". **Q: can you tell me travertine name? thanks.** *(in Photo Questions)* A: Thanks for your question; this is called "Ivory Travertine". **Q: Love chair fabric** *(in Photo Questions)* Where can I purchase the fabric on chair? A: The chair seat fabric is from Ralph Lauren Home; it is called Dermot Stripe in Red/Gold. I'm not certain if it is still available, however; you may want to check online sources for same, such as Amazon, Ebay or Etsy. The wallpaper is still offered by Ralph Lauren Home, however. --- *Source: Houzz professional profile. Reflects the profile as of 2026-11-08.*
