> I am head over heals for our new redo!! Heidi and her team were so fun, knowledgeable, and fresh...working with them was pure JOY! We found a 1940s New England style home and transformed it into a hip modern farmhouse. We are in love with every detail of our home and have only happy memories about the whole project.

**★★★★★ — Akhriev Hefferlin Art, March 2016**

> I have built two homes with Hefferlin Kronenberg Architects. Our architects have been Heidi Hefferlin and Craig Kronenberg, one on each project. Our projects continue to be a delight to us, as result of the excellent planning on the architects' part. The designs suit our lifestyle, our maintenance needs, and our dreams. The partners are globally and nationally experienced, well traveled, and creative. The associates are amazing. This firm really wanted us to be happy clients. We think they are amazing.

> Architects Hefferlin and Kronenberg magnificently designed our abode on the Cumberland Plateau (200+ acres) overlooking the Sequatchie Valley farmlands in Tennessee. The house was beautifully built of enormous rocks harvested unobtrusively below the rock cliffs of the property allowing it to harmonize with the ancient rock formations surrounding it. Large windows and spaces and high ceiling pitches capture the vistas. Wood floors, build-ins and furniture blend with the surrounding forests. modern conveniences, energy efficiencies, and minimum future maintenances were also excellently incorporated.
> A wonderful building experience and joyful place to be. We are most grateful to Heidi and her team. Bravo!

  - Description: Hefferlin + Kronenberg Architects was commissioned to design a family retreat on the brow of the Cumberland Plateau. The house is located on the edge of the Cumberland Plateau close to an outcropping of rocks, forming a portal to the valley below. According to local lore, this is a sacred site used by the Cherokee nation for spiritual meditation. Heidi states, “When I visited the site in the winter of 2010 I selected the house location along with the owners for its spectacular view of the valley…

  - Location: Chattanooga, TN
  - Photos: 26
  - Description: The story of this house is one of site and views. The client acquired a 1960’s-era ranch house on an established residential street. The house was small, and our initial task was to simply add a floor. In studying the site, however, we realized that looking upward and across the street were excellent views of unbuildable wooded lands. In any other direction, steep slopes and closely adjacent neighbors resulted in vistas we thought less compelling. We decided then that the entire second floor add…

  - Description: Tellico Cabin \| Tellico Plains, Tennessee Hefferlin + Kronenberg Architects designed a cabin on the Tellico River for a doctor and his wife. He has been fishing the Tellico since childhood and the site holds an important sentimental value to him. The banks of the river and the Tellico Valley is where the Cherokee nation gathered for important councils so the site has important historical value as well. It’s a magical place. The cabins two steeply pitched roofs supported by heavy oak timber were…

  - Description: HK Architects were asked to reimagine a small Cape Cod style home for a couple relocating to Chattanooga. Located just north of the river, the Winston Residence is comprised of a two-story addition and a complete interior remodel. Adding a modern twist to the modest home meant opening it up to the beautiful landscape done in collaboration with Phillips \| Creasey, a local landscape design team. Open, bright spaces brought new life, and the addition of multiple porches allowed for fantastic indoor…

  - Description: The Lay Low is an adaptive reuse of a 40 x 40 CMU building that formerly housed a beauty shop and the Lay Low Lounge, a men’s gambling club. It is located in the revitalized community of Chattanooga’s Southside. The architects, who live across the street, bought the property with the intent to design an age-in-place, accessible residence for their parents. The building is structured with roof trusses, which allowed for the removal of all interior walls and a total reconfiguring of the space. The…

  - Description: The Holston River Cabin is a family retreat perched on the slopes of the Holston River watershed, nestled amongst the trees overlooking the river below. Built for a family who desires to retreat into the natural landscape of rural Tennessee from their hurried lives in the dense metropolis of Houston, Texas, Holston River Cabin is designed entirely around the site and its surroundings. The steep slope of the watershed required a long, linear plan. This was a gift to the design, as it allowed the…

  - Description: Located on a sprawling horse farm and residential estate, this project combines many functions under one large roof: farm equipment, hay loft, car storage, a workshop, and an event space for family events. The primary design challenge was rethinking the image of a ‘barn’ or ‘shop’. Additional considerations were fitting into the existing Southern context, providing natural light throughout the building, and creating versatility within the space.

## Community Q&A

**Q: wood exterior color please? metal roof color please** *(in Photo Questions)*

Wood exterior color please and metal color roof

A: Miriam,

Thank you for the interest in our work! I'm so glad you like this beautiful home we designed in Tellico, TN.

I can't remember the exact stain color unfortunately. This was black stained cedar siding. Have a look at Iron Grey Hardie Lap Siding. It comes pre finished. Or try Cabot Exterior Stains. The have a semi solid black that would give you a similar look.

As for the roof, that is an Englert standing seam metal roof in Galvalume.

Please let me know if you are interested in our professional design services!

**Q: can you buy the plans & if so, what is price** *(in Photo Questions)*

A: This was a renovation project. There will be a lot of information in the drawings about structural revisions and changes that wouldn't apply to a ground up build. If you have a good builder they would likely be able to make sense of it all, but we would not be revising the drawings without additional fee - and I can't guarantee they would give you everything you need. I think $3,500 sounds like a fair going rate these days.

**Q: what grey material was used on the exterior?** *(in Photo Questions)*

Looks great

A: This is a Fiber Cement Board. Likely James Hardie
https://www.jameshardie.com/products/hardiepanel-vertical-siding

**Q: Home** *(in Photo Questions)*

How many SF is this home?

A: Here is the SQ FT breakdown:

1,931sf, heated and cooled
761sf, garage
527sf, covered walk
533sf, covered deck on the brow

**Q: Can you tell me who supplied those windows** *(in Photo Questions)*

The windows appear to be very nice and have a low profile. I have a current project we are looking at replacing windows with windows like the ones in this project. I was wondering who manufactures these windows.

Thanks,

Tony Griffy, Owner
Artisan Construction LLC

A: This is a custom made window by a local fabricator here in Chattanooga, TN, that we partner with a lot. Set In Stone.

**Q: Love the countertop - what is the stone used?** *(in Photo Questions)*

A: That is not stone - It is a custom concrete countertop and integral sink. Can you see how the material does not change from top to sink? It's all one piece. It was made by Set In Stone a local custom concrete company here in Chattanooga, TN.
