Our home was built in 1960 by Alden Dow, a student of Frank Lloyd Wright, and we wanted this add-on room to look as if it had been here all along. Stan Monroe, the WSDG architect, studied our blueprints/Dow's architecture and came up with a design that met that goal to perfection. Stan uses the best people to work with be they electricians, carpenters, people who lay tile, etc. He also listened to our opinions and was very responsive. He is a delight to work with. This was back in 2003. Stan provided a plan, a budget and a timeline. We worked with him on material choices and design adjustments. For the most part we were very pleased with Stan’s choices which made it easy for us. In that project he created a storage and utility portion to the basement area and dedicated the rest to living space. Stan had contractors relocate and upgrade the furnace and AC and put in a three zone duct system and up size the water heater. The living area consists of a large bedroom with a full wall closet, bathroom with tiled steam shower and custom vanity with a full wall mirror, and nook dining area, a wet bar, sink, lots of counter space and built in custom oak cabinets and a small refrigerator. He brought in a tile artisan who laid in some beautiful tile designs in the steam shower. The wet bar area has a beautiful clear sealed oak hardwood floor. This area also has custom cabinets under the bar and behind the bar and glass displace cabinets above the back counter, all constructed in oak. In the living area the south wall includes a bay window, two sliding doors and a couple large picture windows which lets in lots of light and great views. Stan designed in a very high stepped recessed ceiling that compliment this open feeling. He also installed wiring ports in a couple locations that allowed me to add a small home theater system. On a nice day with the doors open it can be like an outdoor theater. Coming down the stairs he put in a built in offset continuous hardwood handrail with a wrap at the top and bottom. This project completed pretty much on schedule and in budget. It added an additional one thousand square feet of living space to our home. Since then this space has been home for mother-in-law(s), visiting family and friends, lots of gatherings, and temporary lodging for newly weds. > > Being very pleased with out first engagement with Wright Street Design we asked Stan to help us with the redesign of our family room. This was not as large of a project but it involved more custom detail work. Again Stan provided a quote with budget and timeline. This was a main floor family room with floor to ceiling windows along one wall. On the opposing wall Stan designed floor to ceiling multi tiered bookcase style shelving and lower matching cabinets all done in cherrywood. This included inset display lighting, adjustable shelving and inset ports to wire bookshelf speakers. The end cabinet section has a custom wood grill and space inside to house a subwoofer out of site. The drawer above is huge and deep, designed to store various media, wireless headphones, charges and controllers. By the windows and fireplace wall Stan designed a custom television stand much like an entertainment center only low profile so we have full view out the windows beyond the TV. Speakers are set in behind three custom wood grills. The unit is made of matching cherry wood. The equipment sits unnoticed behind smoked glasses doors. On top there is a matching flat wood pedestal that swivels. We have a 40” digital display sitting on that which can be easily turned to any viewing angle. > Tying the walls together Stan designed a three tier fireplace mantel of cherry, replacing the old one. He also replaced the fireplace surround with polished granite and put in a remote ignition. Similar to the previous project Stan completed some work with his own team and other parts using various contractors and suppliers. At no time have we ever felt uncomfortable or untrusting of anyone he brought into our home. Everyone did quality work and were respectful of our time, property and privacy. This project was done on time and in budget. > > In 2006 we hired Wright Street Design again. We had been to several home design shows and spoken with home designers and builders on the Parade of Homes, and still gravitated back to Stan for his quality, style and workmanship. We have wanted a room that could be used for business and a home office. We had a spare undefined room we could use for this but it was located near the front door on the main floor. Stan came up with a fantastic layout. > The room has custom build-in all cherrywood cabinets all the way to the ceiling and including cherry counter tops with multiple file drawers on each side. All the above counter cabinets have glass doors and adjustable shelving. Incorporated into each side of the room is a large desktop work surface with under-counter keyboard tray. Also below each desktop is a side shelf tall enough for a workstation computer or a printer. Underneath the desktop are 4” wood trimmed trays running along the wall just above the wall plugs that hold any wires or cables off the floor. This room has a bay style window with two casement windows on each side. Below these windows Stan installed a full length polished marble counter and two sets of three pull out drawers for office supplies and miscellaneous storage beneath the counter. On the entrance side of the room there is a floor to ceiling corner cupboard allowing for major amounts of storage, with five adjustable shelves. Next to this cupboard he designed a matching set of mail box cubbies and below that a dual shelf storage area with a cherry wood roll top closure. The room door is glass panes and a has a sound seal that drops down when closed. This project was mostly custom cabinet work. Delivery took a little longer than planned, but the project was in budget and done well. > > Our most recent home project was an interesting undertaking and again after considering alternative contractors it was easy to choose Wright Street Design. We decided we would like to have some type of deck or porch off the side of the house and an expanded patio area. Stan presented a number design options to us. This project involved removing a single tall window from the side wall of our living room and putting in French doors leading on to a 20 x 35 foot deck. We went with a 3 season style room with 13 exchangeable glass or screen panels that wrap around three sides. The panels are large but manageable. There were some very sophisticated window enclosure options that he presented but the panels were the most cost effective and basically simple. The porch was built over sloped part of the yard. To make working with the panels even easier Stan designed a trap door in the floor over the lowest part of the slope. We are able remove panels and place them right into a holding rack in the floor. No worries about where to store them. The floor planks are made of composite material and always look great and require minimal care. The frame sits on nine substantial poured concrete piers. The base is enclosed with panels and composite lattice with a varmint screen barrier buried around the perimeter. The shingle roof is tied into the house roofline with the gutters extending around the pouch. There is a back door and stairs leading to a huge sweeping patio that connects to the house front entrance. The patio has a long slow curve that is about 30 feet long and is about 8 to 15 feet wide on average. Stan used beautiful blue stone slabs and redesigned the concrete work going to the front door to tie in the stone. He also installed new drainage in the front flower garden to manage runoff from the patio. We contracted this project off season to save a little money and it allow some of the contractors to have a project during the winter months. Again the subcontractors the Stan brought in for this project were very professional. We didn't rush the project because it ran through the winter and the guys did not work if the weather was too cold or conditions were not appropriate. We did not have a hard timeline to be finished. The patio work came last in the spring. We were under budget using the window panels but went over budget with our choice of bluestone. Overall it is a fantastic addition and the most used room for two thirds of the year and worth every bit of the extra cost. > > Stan is a great person to work with. They’re design elements so to speak. They are the main component in solving the visual problem of providing a pleasing way to display a tv. Our solution was to include the tv as part of a large sculptural pattern of almost black (darkly stained vertical grained oak) boxes. As a counter point their rhythm across the wall is unexpectedly broken by the insertion of another box - the flat screen tv. The light coming from the boxes adds visual interest and mimics the light coming from the tv.
