Not only does this allow you to see how much you are spending in each area, it is also helpful if you want to play around with where you spend your money. In our case, we were able to save money in some areas and devote it to others. > > Second, Les immediately understood the aesthetic we were going for, even when we had a hard time articulating it ourselves. During out first meeting he was able to sketch out a design on paper that incorporated many of the changes we wanted to see in the house, such as reorienting it to face the driveway. > > Third, Les is endlessly patient, going over details with us numerous times and adjusting to the whims of homeowners when we decide that the roof we planned for two months ago should be redesigned. > > Above all, we were impressed with Les’s honesty. Everyone we talked to before we started the addition told us to expect to pay 20-25% over the quote in the end. This almost caused us to not begin the project. Our project, though, stayed within budget. It did cost more than we initially planned, but this was entirely our own decision, as we opted to do more work than covered in the original quote, such as change a roof line and add a metal roof. When these new items were costed out, they always stayed within the budget promised by Les. > > I’ve worked on a lot of construction sites and one thing that was noticeably different about this job was the values of Les’s workers. The crew that did most of the work not only worked longer days (7am to 6:30pm was pretty normal), their language was suitable for my young kids.
