> This is my go-to architectural firm. They helped me re-invent a 1960's ranch that was built in the middle of an historic district. The home was originally built as a duplex, a feature I wanted to maintain. That meant, Bird & Kamback had to gut one side and reconfigure it to meet all my life-style requirements and yet maintain the exterior footprint due to historic overlay restrictions. I ended up with an open kitchen, dining and lounging area under a beamed vaulted ceiling. Daryl Bird called for a huge arched window in the kitchen area instead of upper kitchen cabinets (a key request of mine). Other rooms -- a paneled Parisian-ish drawing room and adjacent library add more human-scaled cozy spaces to my half of the duplex. In all cases, ceiling design was made interesting and taken to the ultimate height the roof slopes would allow. Darryl worked in a double-sided fireplace. I love dining and cooking in a room with a crackling fire. Many architectural details were added and challenges overcome to create just the living space I dreamed of having.

> This firm has been excellent to work with. They are courteous, punctual and absolutely work with you to create the house that you want! They will work with you throughout the entire building process to guarantee that what they have drawn will be implemented to the correct standards. The project should be completed by Jan 2016...

> Greg Kamback has been absolutely wonderful to work with on several building projects in a museum park of which I am a board member. He is kind, patient, and extremely talented at turning our dreams into reality. A visitors center, a gift shop, an historic reproduction schoolhouse are some of his projects for our museum and park.
> I also refer some of my real estate clients to Greg for personal home design or remodeling, with confidence that he will guide and inspire them to design and build the right home for the way their families live.

> We moved into our new home one year ago and have just completed the "one year punch list" so we are confident now to comment on the project we completed.
>
> When considering our plans for our "forever house" - the house of our dreams, the one we saved and waited on patiently for 25 years - we were told by everyone who'd done it before us to retain the services of qualified, competent architects, and that the selection of the architect was the single most important factor in determining the success of our project. We will tell you this is absolutely true - the architect is worth "every dime" you spend.
>
> We interviewed a total of six architectural firms for this project. Bird and Kamback was selected because they had done the most research, and demonstrated the most care and creativity in conceptualizing the project. After working through initial design phase, we additionally decided to make Darryl Bird the overall project manager for our home though construction. Bird and Kamback took the project to bids, managed a major value engineering phase, re-bid the project, assisted us with soliciting qualified builders, received and reviewed project bids, and then assisted us in selecting the builder and developing the construction contract we used.
>
> Throughout construction, Darryl Bird was totally committed to the success of our project, inspecting, reviewing and making improvements and modifications as they were needed. Countless issues were identified and resolved between the builder and the architect without our needed involvement. Issues involving soil and foundation engineering, structural and load bearing materials, so many details we would never have been qualified to even know were there, let alone have a qualified opinion. THIS is where the architect "adds value" to your home.
>
> I will say this much to anybody considering a project of this type - find a qualified and competent architect, one who has past performance of the type of work you're considering. The architect's management of the project through construction will add to the value of the home beyond the cost of the architect - you're making money here. Certainly the home we built has the "wow!" factor of a custom design. Everybody who visits us is simply stunned and amazed at what we've accomplished. But more importantly to us, we know the home is solidly constructed and will last, as we intended, "forever".
>
> If you're looking for an architectural firm to build your "forever house" in the southeast, or particularly the greater Tennessee Valley, you should definitely talk to Bird and Kamback about your project.

> We have known Darryl Bird and Greg Kamback of Bird and Kamback Architects for many years and have had the pleasure of collaborating on several beautifully designed homes throughout North Alabama. They truly listen to the wishes of their clients, and produce creative and thoughtful results. Always searching for the best construction methods, their architectural details, plans, project scope of work and 3D presentations are the best. It's been our pleasure to work alongside them and utilize these helpful tools to bring client dreams to reality.

**★★★★★ — slsamples, Dec. 2014**

> Bird &Kamback are fabulous architects. Great at listening and then creating exactly what you want and more. They did the drawings for an historic home for me. But what impresses me the most, is their ability to switch gears between historic properties and more modern designs. Whether it be a home or commercial building, I highly recommend them.

## Community Q&A

**Q: New Construction - what to choose first?** *(in Design Dilemma)*

We are doing a 100% custom new build. We did not intend to do custom but this is the route we've found ourselves taking due to several other outside factors. I am beginning to pick out pieces of the home to start figuring out how to end up with a cohesive look and feel and stay within budget. My question is, for a given room, what is the appropriate order in choosing selections? For example, the kitchen - is it cabinets, then counters, then flooring then backsplash then paint? I need help understanding where to start in each room. We've only owned our current home and it was a tract builder where we had limited options to choose from and a "design center" to guide selections.
thanks!

A: Of course a home owner can make good choices! That does not mean they would not benefit from working with a design professional. Doing so saves more than just time, it adds value. Design professionals carry with them a wealth of training, knowledge, and experience that the typical home owner does not possess, simply because the typical home owner is not immersed in these sort of decisions every day. The very best results seem to come about as a result of good collaboration between the home owner and the design professional.

**Q: mixing stones in kitchen** *(in Design Dilemma)*

Im thinking white cabinets, pure white quartz on top, island ,pure white quartzite(if I can find) and white marble subway tiles, dark wood floor and stainless appliances. What do you think of the subway tiles and island top matching?

A: I think your white on white on white idea is great. The interior designer I work with claims that white is my favorite color! Nothing sets off the play of shadow and light through a space like white surfaces. One thing you may want to consider is making the island top (and possibly cabinets) a different color to differentiate it and make it pop in the sea of white,

**Q: Remodel living room** *(in Design Dilemma)*

Want to paint walls in living room and hallway, thinking spice/oranges/brown colors. Want leather furniture, new carpet, new window covering, new front door. Not sure where to start and what would look best in this room.

A: The solution to this kind of problem is multifaceted and complex. I'd recommend buying a couple of hours of consulting time from an interior designer. They will offer a fresh perspective. They are also design professionals and will come to you with a wealth of experience.

**Q: Which table (left side) of the picture should I keep? Square or circle** *(in Design Dilemma)*

A: I really like the simplicity of the square table. No need to continue shopping!

**Q: Vanity lighting fixture. Do I need 2 individual ones, above mirrors?** *(in Design Dilemma)*

A: Another thing you might consider is putting up a single large mirror. Then the light would not look so conspicuous.

**Q: I love the siding. Is it hardipanel?** *(in Photo Questions)*

I especially like the horizontal lines. How did you accomplish that? Thanks so much.

A: It's a little more complicated that it appears. Under the panels are 1x4 cementitious boards, then strips of air barrier lapping them in a shingle fashion, then cementitious soffit material. Nichiha makes a rain screen system that's worth checking into if you are doing a lot of it. I formed the "X" corner trim from brake metal.
