We chose her because she was recommended to us as a "very talented designer," and on our first meeting, she seemed to show genuine enthusiasm for our home and we felt she would bring a fresh eye to our design efforts. > > After paying her a $4500 retainer fee, with the understanding that she was completing a large project and would not be available for two weeks, we eagerly awaited her availability. After three weeks, without hearing from her, and having several design review issues that were becoming time-sensitive,as construction was moving faster than we anticipated and we needed to instruct our crew on the buildout of the bathrooms, we asked her if she could give time to the layout. The time issue, in all fairness, created an imperfect start to our relationship, as she apparently didn't have time to meet with us and ended up working by email and telephone. > > In one bathroom, we needed to revise the architect's initial plan because it was not a universal design and we asked Kimberly to review. She submitted a revised design that made absolutely no practical sense and would have involved significant changes to framing and window placement. We ended up modifying the layout ourselves and moved forward. > > Our experience continued to decline, as we moved forward -- primarily through email contact, asking her to begin pulling together finnish ideas -- specifically tile and overalll design. She never sat down with us and discussed our preferences -- beyond color preferences and -- since there was limited time, suggested we meet at the tile store and begin looking at tile. > As we walked around the tile store, she lead us to tile lines that she liked-- and since there are many beautiful tile lines, some sample ideas were generated. After about an hour, Kimberly "had to run" to her next meeting, and we were left to continue looking at tile. Afterwards, she sent an email saying how she was thrilled we found tile on our first meeting. > > Let's just say it went down from there. When we brought the tile samples home, we realized that while they were nice, we didn't have an overall plan for the bathroom, and were not sure the look was the direction we really wanted. When I contacted Kimberly, and explained that we really needed to have more of a story board for the overall design, she was surprised that we needed a drawing -- but said she would work on one and get it to us. But it was really more of a "gosh, I don't know why you need this." > > Our experience went downhill from here. We should have ceased working with her as soon as it was obvious that she had not even bothered to set up an initial design meeting with us, and that the few times we did meet, she always was rushing from somewhere or to somewhere and didn't have time. > > We hired Kimberly expecting a collaborative relationship in which she would spend a bit of time with us to get a sense of our preferences--and meld those preferences with her design talents to create spaces that were consistent with our homestyle yet had her stamp of creative vision. There was no collaboration. > > If you are staging a home for a realtor (which I understand is how she got started in interior design), I suppose you just need to come in and "do your thing." I got the sense that Kimberly works very well with carte blanche design. > > We finally terminated our relationship after spending several months trying to make it work. OUr mistake. In our final telephone conversation, when I expressed my disappointment with our experience -- and the feeling that she didn't really make time for us, she offered no apology,nor assumed any responsibility for what had gone wrong in our working relationship. She said she would refund the balance of our retainer, which as it turned out was less than $400. We spent $4000 and ended up with bathrooms unfinished. For our tight budget this really hurt. (a month after terminating our agreement, Kimberly sent a project notebook documenting all of her "work" -- primarily clippings from magazines that were never shown to us -- and an excel listing of her telephone calls, design time, and the 3 vendor visits, plus one face-to-face meeting at our home, which added up to our $4000 in hourly charges.) > > Buyer beware. Kimberly is creative, but with aspirations to create product lines, write books, and become a high end event designer, her ego seems to get in her way a bit. **Comment from Kimberly Rider Interiors:** > I would like to respond to this review as I think it highlights the problems that can occur if a client decides to hire a designer when they are very late in the design process or if their expectations around budget or timing are not feasible. > > The designer and client relationship is a collaborative and dynamic one, requiring mutual respect and trust built upon by time spent together. Clear goals, a realistic budget and timeline and a process that everyone participates in lay the path for a successful job. > > On this project, my firm was asked to come in and look at several areas of the home: > 1.Kitchen Updates and updated lighting and décor for breakfast room > 2.Small Sitting Room fireplace and furniture layout > 3.Closet, Window and Room layout for the mother-in-law suite > 4.3 bathrooms including a master bath > 5.Master Bedroom > 6.Formal Living Room and adjacent office. > > To begin work, we requested a retainer and billed hourly for our Conceptual Design work and meetings. As we were already working on another project that was slated to be ending in about two weeks, we let the client know we could not start right away. > > We met several times to review each of the areas and obtain the existing drawings for each area. Photographs and measurements were obtained. Every member of the family had different ideas about what style was desired and each of those opinions were taken into account in the design process. In the bathrooms, the construction was already fully in framing and rough plumbing and electrical installation. Issues had come up that I was asked to respond to onsite and in a brainstorming session we discussed some solutions. One idea helped solve the problem, but did require some reframing. The decision to pursue a costly change this late in the game was not pursued…understandably. > > My design process involves in-depth meetings and image collection and sharing so that we can produce Mood Boards, Floor plans, Renderings (with materials rendered to scale) and detailed specifications. These detailed renderings and material recommendations were provided for the Formal Living Room and Office, Floor Plans were provided for the mother-in-law suite, Master Suite and Living Room. Design recommendations and style direction in the form of images were provided for the kitchen updates, the sitting room fireplace, ideas for updating the breakfast room and Living Room lighting and redesigning the office and master bedroom. > > It became clear that tile selections were needed immediately for two of the bathrooms. Images of other bathrooms showing style direction were shared and in seeing that the client liked what she saw, meetings were set to shop for tile in person. After a one hour meeting at the tile store, the small guest bath shower tile was selected, recommendations for a way to update but use the existing vanity were presented and an idea for the main guest bath tile was discovered. This main guest bath tile needed a detailed layout, custom glass tile color selection and rendering. Color Strike off Samples were requested for this tile. This detailed, color, to-scale rendering was provided for the client and tile store and was the tile that they eventually purchased and installed (even though a less expensive alternative was entertained and discussed). I was never told during the process that the tile selections were worrisome for any family member, merely just enthusiasm over how beautiful the tile was and a wish that it wasn’t the more expensive option. > > Inevitably, the focus of this review is on how rushed and stressful the process felt for the client. I think it could have been avoided had I been brought in months prior to the project starting. I understand a similar experience happened for this client in her last project where the value that a designer can bring was not fully realized. > > I strive to listen to my clients’ feedback, taking into account responsibility when something does not go well for either part of the relationship. I know how important it is to be sure my firm is given enough time and budget to do our job well. Over the last 18 years of working in this industry I have learned a lot and know that our current design process and repeat clients tell me we are doing work and creating an environment that can be collaborative, fun and satisfying. > > And yes, I have written two books, designed for celebrity clients, curated high-end eco-fundraising events and had an absolute blast doing it, it’s not at all about my ego. I have considered decomposed granite or "no-mow" grass. I want it to be level with the path and something the kids can play on. Right now I'm leaning toward something that doesn't require watering, but we are putting in irrigation and could have grass if we decide to go that way.
