Included complete granite counter tops. Also included complete renovation of a wet bar. They did a great job incorporating above cabinet woodwork that I had done to add to the custom cabinet look. The team completed all work within a 4 week timeframe and let me know every day what the schedule would be for the following few days. Once they began the work they made progress every day until completion. Throughout the project great care was taken to minimize dust and disruption. All work was performed per the estimate but they allowed for modifications throughout the process. They are pretty cool though! **Q: cooktop in center island dilemma** *(in Remodeling)* Hi. Need some help with cooktop placement in a kitchen remodel. Recently bought a 30 yr old, single story house in need of remodel before we move in. for the kitchen remodel , we need to change flooring, reconfigure some cabinets, change countertops, open up a wall to living room. Basically I am tearing up a lot of things. The previous owners had a electric cooktop with a telescoping downdraft vented to outside through the floor. The sink is against the wall behind the cooktop. There are no exterior walls in the kitchen. Above is attic and shingle roof. I have never lived in a house with a cooktop in the center island. In my current home, I have a gas cooktop with a vent hood to the outside. I cook a lot, daily. It is heavy duty Indian cooking, sautéing, cooktop pressure cooker - you name it. I have been reading a lot about cooktops with telescoping downdrafts in the center island and it has me worried. I am concerned about safety with cooktop in island and two young Kids. The island will only be for prep and cooktop though. The wall I am breaking open will become another island with eating in overhang. So kids should generally not come to the cooktop area. I am also concerned about lingering smells and messes from splattering. I am wondering if these downdraft cooktops are even halfway decent or if I should just move the cooktop to the wall , install a vent hood and push out through the roof. Or should I ignore / remove the downdraft and instead get a venthood over the center island and go through the roof? The cost and complicated changes give me pause. Has anyone undertaken such a project? What did it involve? Do they like the change ? **Q: Arghhhh! Anyone else hate their new granite?! Designer help please!** *(in Remodeling)* Hi! I posted last week about installing copious amounts of Giallo Verona in my brand new kitchen. I had no idea it would look like a 2005 spec home. Nightmare! Here are some photos. Designers: Do I just ride it out for the next 5-10 years then update? I never imagined it would be so distracting to work on either. I'm not a big fan of subway tile, so that's why I did the full granite back splash. I didn't want to see seams so this is why I chose Giallo Verano. Ugh. Is it as bad as I think it is? Lit up at night it's actually nice. During the day I want to scream. It reads more gray in the photos, but it actually works nicely with the cream cabinets. It just looks soooo dated. Obviously, I lost my mind during construction. Help please! A: I suggest removing the granite backsplashes and replacing them with a large format porcelain tile backsplash if you still feel unhappy with the appearance after trying to add accessories, etc. The large format tile will reduce unwanted seams and add a contrast to the granite countertops. **Q: Installing granite after removing formica. Inside corner delima.** *(in Design Dilemma)* We have formica with a 4 inch backsplash installed in our new home. I am changing it out for Granite. I plan not to install granite backsplash countertops, and will do a full height glass tile backsplash counter to upper cabinet. BUT, I have 2 inside corners that give me concern. Both are where the counter meets cabinet. One is the cabinet box for the refrigerator and the other is the cabinet box for the wall oven. The Granite guy told me that when they remove the existing 4" formica backsplash there will, most likely, be some damage to the wood. He suggests using 4" granite backsplash just on those 2 ends, along the cabinet boxes, from the wall out to the countertop edge. I think it's going to look strange. But the other option I readily see is to wrap the full height tile backsplash around these inside corners and bring it out to the countertop edge. I do not like that option either. If there is signifigant damage which needs to be covered, I am thinking now about just using a 4" 'baseboard' along that cabinet box edge. I think it will look more attractive than bringing out the tall tile backsplash or having a 4" granite backsplash in just these 2 returns. My granite is set for lay out and cut on Friday! Help!! A: I think your best option is to wrap the full height tile backsplash around the inside corners and bring it out to the countertop edge.
